Jason touched the cut on his shoulder. Tender, but shallow. He wondered if he should suture it or just clean it and put on a bandage. The adrenaline had worn off now and the blood had dried on his shirt. The adrenaline crash was hitting him and he was feeling fatigued. He stifled a yawn. The Mentats however were still keeping his brain active. He pushed up his glasses onto his nose.
[Medicine 50] "Or you could bandage your leg tightly, stick it in a brace, put your weight on your other leg and go to sleep." Jason yawned. The lack of sleep and the overactive brain was making him antsy. [Science 40]"Stimpaks work by increasing metabolic and regenerative processes. This requires energy and while Stimpaks have several proteins to perform the process energy still needs to come from the body. In other words it'll hit you like an adrenaline crash if you decide to use that Super Stimpak."
"Also, I don't think there are any fire ants in Ivanpah anyway." He cleaned the wound on his shoulder with a clean rag and some alcohol, then bandaged it.

Jason narrowed his eyes. He had some respect for the ranger and was probably even more afraid of him now that he revealed that he had once been Legion. Still he found himself wondering if this man was really going to argue with a Follower clearly trained in medical procedures about this situation. Jason knew what he was saying was true, since he had been helping a doctor research the use of Radscorpion venom derivatives as an alternative for certain treatments. Still, he was tempted to just stick the man with enough Med-X to shut him up and put him to sleep. To find a radscorpion now would be a pain, and a waste since the wound and fracture would heal just fine if he just relaxed a bit.
Jason gave a sideways glance at Eddie, then, overwhelmed by a bit of snark opened his mouth to speak. "You really just want to stick yourself with that Super Stimpak don't you?" It had to be the Mentats. Right?
"Look," Jason sighed. "Why waste the bullet on the Radscorpion, or waste the Super Stimpak when a bandage and brace will just keep everything in place and you can ease off the leg. I'd recommend a crutch or a cane but I can see you're not the type. If you're as tough as you say and something happens stick yourself with the damn stimpak and go nuts." After a second he added. "If you want a consolation injection I can stick you with a regular stimpak and you can have a lollipop."
Had to be the Mentats.

On his way to the campfire Lucas searched two bodies that law in between him and it. 2 Psycho's on the first and a Jet on the second, bringing the count up to three. He was not above using such items, but after considering it he decided they'd be more useful as a bartering tool.
But this was no time for thinking about that sort of thing. As he sat by the campfire, it was time to listen to the Ranger's story. A Centurion! The self righteous man he had been travelling with was a Centurion of Caesar's legion, or training to become one at least.. Noticeable ws the way he said Caesar, different from those he'd heard talking about it back west. He actually had very little knowledge of the Legion, given hat the Mojave is as far west. He had heard though that Caravans find their land exceptionally safe whilst passing through and need no protection, a stark contrast to the veritable business that has grown around Caravan protection in the NCR.
A thought crossed Lucas' mind, how much of his disdain for the NCR was cause by the influence of the Legion? He seems to bear no love for either, but he wondered nonetheless. "Heh, wouldn't have pegged you as a Legionaire. But I'd like to ask, why stay as long as reaching the Dam? I've heard some tales and it never sounded like they were much nicer beforehand."
What're you looking at me like that for? I'll shank you I will.

"Legion was family to me. They raised me, taught me, disciplined me and gave me strength. I didn't agree with the pointless murder and enslavement but I was still a loyal member. I was at the rank of praetorian when I left. I was trained in proper hand to hand combat and I know how to ise machetes and knives properly. I know all the weak points in a person's body and the major arteries. I know how to make a person's death slow and painful...but I don't. It's not me. I rather subscribe myself to mercy killing someone than allow them to be tortured."
Max began to go in his dufflebag and pulled out a machete gladius. "This blade alone has claimed the lives of 54 men that challenged me...we used to have a saying whenever we were about to kill a profli- ahem, enemy; To be spared is the ultimate insult."

Eddie understood little about the Legion, being from the East beyond the Great Divide, but had picked up enough of what Max had said to have a passing understanding of the Legion and it's ruler.
"A hard people then these Legion, ayuh. Sometimes I wondered what it would have been like if the Abbey had taken over our Tribe, raised us all. Not just me...... Perhaps this Caesar [si-Éz+Ör] was right Tribal life was not kind. Still I'm glad they didn't. Life in the wastes is hard enough, same everywhere you go East Coast included. Same movers and shakers with the same plans. In the end it's the small people who can't catch a break that pay for these ideals with blood. Seems these days man's existence is conflict."
'Find much out there Lucas?" Eddie asked weakly as the mercenary came and hunkered down by the camp fire. When the mercenary displayed a few hits of Psycho the surgeon felt relieved. The field had not yet been stripped of all it's valuables. He made a mental note of where the 10mm pistol had fallen down in the Dry Lake, he'd have to return for it later.
While the thought of pawing through the belongings of the dead disturbed him greatly his general pragmatism counselled him against holding to such scruples. The road was never forgiving enough that he could pass up the opportunity to gather valuable resources, especially with their destination so close at hand.
He rose. Unsteady on his feet and wandered over to where his .357 had fallen in the skirmish. He dusted the scarred revolver off and ejected the dun shell spitefully grinding it into the dirt with his boot. He checked the woman he'd shot, then the man, slotted the rusted length of metal pipe into one of his pockets and began to rummaged through their pockets and boots trying to be as respectful as possible.
The surgeon would have taken the leather armour from her two if he'd had the courage but decided to leave the dead woman be for propriety's sake. Likely the clothing would not fit either way. He found nothing on the woman but a few bottle caps and a butter knife which he tossed aside. The bearded man on the other hand had a magazine for the 10mm with four rounds.
The next area he checked over was the far side of the building where the Ranger had returned fire upon the Raiders. As he skirted around the building his foot entered sticky patch of dirt which turned out by the light of the moon to be soaked through with fragments of bone and brain.
Eddie retched, unable to control himself and emptied his stomach. After a few minutes he returned to the headless corpses, keeping his eyes fixed on his hands so that he did not have to look upon the thick coating of brain matter the Ranger had given the wall. Very little on the two dead raiders, a small battered .38 revolver, a playing card the 9 of Diamonds which he tucked in his pocket, and between then maybe a dozen caps.
Finally he covered the short distance to retrieve the 10mm from the base of the Dry Lake before returning to the fire with his bounty to store in his pack. He genuinely felt bad as he checked over the weapons attempting to determine their condition or if any had jammed or been damaged. He had little enough knowledge of fire arms beyond how to maintain them....but repairing them was beyond his knowledge.
"Ranger...this one's yours if you want it. Looks to be the slug thrower that buried that shell in your leg. Ask and it's yours."
Content he'd done the right thing he flipped over the Gecko pelt and unrolled it like a bed mat and settled in to sleep on his side so that he did not re-open his back.

Jason, taking Max's silence as consent dug into his bag and produced a medical brace, essentially a ring of straps with a couple of solid pieces of metal to keep it in place and a bandage. With the ranger's consent Jason tied the bandage as tightly as he could muster and then placed the brace tightly in place. It would be a little uncomfortable and the discomfort might cause him to keep the weight off of it.
With that Jason stood up as the talk of scavenging was brought up. It would be remiss of him not to check the body. That was probably only a part of the reason. He walked across the road, yawning and putting his hand to his mouth. He tried to avert his gaze from the body but a subconscious slip drew his eyes to it. The man's blank stare was pointed upwards toward the sky, his hands still at his throat.
Jason searched in the shadow of the wall for the 9mm pistol. His hands found it leaning against one of the larger pieces of rubble in the wall's shadow. He sighed. He would have to check for ammunition. He patted down the man's pants and found a magazine for the pistol. He would have to move into the light to check how many bullets it held. A stimpak was also in another pocket.
He walked away, releasing the breath he had sucked in as he checked the body while holding everything in his hands. As he took a seat by the fire. He gave the stimpak to Eddie. "I have a decent supply already."
He looked at the 9mm pistol. He had used one like it before when he was learning to defend himself but he was definitely not an expert and he personally preferred laser weaponry anyway due to the lack of recoil. "Anyone want this?" he asked about the pistol. His hands moved over it, not with the practiced rigor of a soldier but with the finesse of someone who knew how to look for the nuances in design, finding catches and releases. The magazine in it was full, if you counted the one in the chamber. The extra magazine held seven rounds. He placed the weapon and magazine on one of the bricks they were sitting on, lay his bag under his head and covered himself with the lab coat.
"I really need to sleep," he said. The Mentats had reached their peak and as focused as his mind was it was trying too hard to work on nothing. He was at the point where he was trying to count every step of the ants he could hear, the breathing of his companions. He wondered about the person Max had noticed.
He sat bolt upright with the revelation. "What about the guy you saw?" he asked Max.

Eddie had long since fallen asleep and was pleasantly dozing in the warmth of the fire. The stimpack having accentuated his body's natural healing processes due to his knowledge of the chemicals and where best to inject the syringes contents. His eyes fluttered slightly, his dream almost lucid.
Almost lucid because Eddie was well aware that there was not way he could have been fortunate enough to find himself in a position long enough to take a real, hot bath that being said it was the purpose of a dream was it not and thusly he decided not the question the scenario.
He groaned in pleasure and he slipped into the steaming waters of the immaculately clean bathtub. "Yeah. That's the stuff." He mumbled to himself. It was so real that around the camp fire and coinciding with Jason asking about the 9mm Pistol that his dream manifested as a quiet. "Mmmmmm yeah."
More importantly Trudy was there. From that point onwards the dream took and unexpected turn that I don't feel like sharing with you all...... Well? What what did you expect perverts? I don't write trashy novellas for angsty teens and middle aged women. Not all all.

"Sleep," Jason responded simply to Max's question. He took it the man knew what he was talking about and rolled over to fall asleep.
Jason's sleep was fitful. An overactive mind could conjure many things, including disembodied voices and the ghost of a dead raider whose voice gargled on his own blood. It was... jarring to say the least. Jason awoke at one point to find himself standing across the road by the body, or rather falling as when he awoke his legs gave out from under him and he almost fell directly on top of the body. He stood up quickly and looked around. Had anyone noticed?
He stumbled back to the camp and lay down again as though he had simply gone off to take care of biological functions. Hopefully the rest of the night would be uneventful.

The minty taste of it helped Max get his mind together in the early mornings.
"You know, while you guys were asleep, I went looting in those ruins opposite of us and found some interesting things. 2 frag grenades, 3 frag mines and 2 helpings of hydra. Now I don't mean to sound impatient but could you please apply it so we can get on our way?" The impatience and disgust of laziness became evident in Max's passive aggressive tone easily.

Jason blinked a few times at the light, when his vision didn't completely clear he realised his glasses were missing. He looked around and found them discarded next to him where they had fallen off of his face. He put them, blinked again and then groaned at the headache. "Don't you sleep?"
He removed the tin from his jacket and swallowed one of the pills. He was starting to run dangerously low. Nipton, being the town of debauchery that it was would most likely have some. He pocketed the tin and sat up.
"Hydra?" He took up one of the bottles, opened it and smelled it. He drew back from the smell of it. How the Legion came up with this disgusting thing he would never know. What really made Jason wonder was how something so disgusting could be addictive. He held his palm flat against the bottle neck turned the bottle over to let some of the drink touch his palm and then turned it back. He licked his palm and drew back again. Potent, but not the most potent he had seen. The problem with Hydra was that since it was one of those trail remedies it lacked the precise measurements of other medicine and so every one was made differently from person to person, even bottle to bottle.
"I think it should be fine, though you could stretch it a bit so it doesn't put too much strain on your body." He put down the bottle and took a sip of water to wash the taste from his mouth.
He could see into the dry lake now during the day. A line of ants trailed, pulling meat from the carcass of a dead Brahmin off in the lake. On the other side of the road, where the other wrecked building was, was another expanse of desert stretching on. A crashed plane lay buried under a couple centuries' worth of sand and dust. Jason stretched and pulled some Brahmin jerky from his bag and began chewing on it to get something in his stomach. He looked over to Max sitting across from him and held out his hand, offering a strip of jerky.

Given that he hadn't slept for a number of days, a deep sleep came over Lucas following the fight. He was cast away in a meaningless but blissful dream, but when he returned from it he remembered little apart from the faces of people from his old life. Unfortunately the restful sleep had to come to an end as the harsh Mojave sun assaulted his eyes.
As he rose groggily he reached for his bag from which he grabbed a box of cram. Not the most glamorous of food, but there's certainly worse options when you're travelling. It was some kind of meat, that was all he knew and all he cared about as he gulped it down. He was half listening to the Follower and the Ranger as they conversed, but his ears perked up at the mention of explosives. "Grenades and Mines eh? You know how to use them?"

Eddie awoke the following morning to the sounds of ants chittering across the Dry Lake and the faintly distorted sound of the Ranger's scornful voice through the pre-war riot armour. His back was stiff, the wounds having sealed overnight due to the miraculous manner by which the stimpaks accentuated his body's natural healing properties, however it pained him greatly as he rose to a sitting position.
When he returned to camp the mesquite fire was still smouldering gently within the small hollowed out depression he'd constructed it in and the radiating heat given off by the ashes would allow him to cook up the last serving his Gecko Meat.
The company only just appeared to be rousing themselves from slumber so he still had time. He poked his head around the immediate area and found what he was looking for with not too great and effort before returning with a small yucca fruit which he paired with a dessicated jalapeno pepper from his pack. The preparation of the meal was simple. He sliced the ingredients, into cubes and speared the segments through with four long wooden shavings which he proceeded to cook over the fire.
Famished he tore into the kebabs consuming the wasteland bounty and savoured how the fruit and peppers complemented the tough gecko meat. It was invigorating and with his dreams of Trudy and the hot bath having faded from his mind it was the next best thing.
"Wan 'un?" He asked through a mouthful of gecko meat. He'd finished one of the kebabs on his own and probably could finish another few but decided against it because he knew it would be poor manners. He snatched up another one and left the remaining two stuck into the ground over the hot ashes.
"I uh...." He said wiping grease and Yucca juice from the corner of his mouth. "Ranger it's not what you want to hear but..... I want to bury these people. I'll do it myself if I have to and meet you all in Nipton if you are unwilling to wait. If I do it now while it's still cool I should be able to make Nipton by lunch time. If you are pushing on from there then perhaps you could leave a note..... maybe in one of the letter boxes on the main street."

Probably will end up blowing up my hand in the process. You want it, take it. Lord knows pre war tech like that has probably expired and is volatile. Wouldn't recommend holding onto it."
Getting up and dusting himself off. max picked up his rifle and cocked back the hammer to let out the casing inside the barrel. "Bury the bodies? Those that attempted to kill us? They are not befit for such privilege. They are simply animals that were put down for terrorizing the Lord's children. But if you care do dirty your hands in such a way, go ahead."
As Max looked to Nipton, he saw something that he wasn't expecting. Large smoke pillars filled the skies above and darkened the sun. The stench of burning rubber began to slowly approach the groups small encampment. "Something is wrong...We have to go to Nipton now. I fear the desert fox has already struck".

Upon getting there, the stench of burning rubber flooded the nose. The town's residents seemed to cook on the piles of burning tires and screams could be heard of those that haven't died yet. Max went on main street of the town and looked forward down toward the town hall. Upon laying his eyes on the crimson red outfit, his breath hitched. Arriving in Nipton, Lucas figured it'd be best not to be seen by whatever or whoever was causing the smoke. He briefly told the Ranger that he was taking an alternate route between buildings. He sneaked around making sure not to be seen and arrived at a corner of a house west of the town hall that was perfectly positioned to overlook the entrance to the Hall. There was a distinct smell of burning flesh, and as he peered around the corner of the building he saw more. Decapitations, and people being strung up to posts. Like he had seen in Golgotha but these were tied rather than impaled. Then he heard Max yelling what appeared to be a name. 'What's that damned fool doing'

Eddie spat on the floor, disgusted, his protestations were falling on deaf ears.
"If you won't help then fine, be off with you. I'll find my way to Nipton later."
He strode away from the group scowling, looking for an open section of ground wide enough and with soft enough earth that he could dig the shallow graves quickly and efficiently. He wasn't surprised. Pragmatism was one thing but callousness was another and more decidedly prominent in wastelanders, in this case only serving to reinforce his low opinion of the Mojave Rangers.
Like all of the other movers and shakers they claimed to care, just not enough to take responsibility for their actions.
He found a spot not too far from the camp, and began to dig.

Jason chewed his jerky ponderously as he listened to the exchange. He was being quiet partially because he didn't want to get involved and partially because he felt like someone had taken a baseball bat to his spine. He watched the smoke at Nipton, rise, growing thicker and thicker as the minutes ticked by. He was against going headfirst into danger, or rather he wanted to avoid this situation altogether. He was a Follower of the Apocalypse. By definition he arrived after the hell had moved on. A cynical outlook to be sure but one that could potentially keep him alive. Still, if people were injured he had to help them.
He sighed. "I'll help Eddie bury the bodies. If something happens the two of us might slow you down anyway."
As Eddie retorted, Jason finished his jerky and took a drink of water. When he was finished he pulled on his jacket and followed Eddie to the spot the man had picked for the graves. "I'll... gather the bodies," Jason said as he began dragging the bodies together starting with the closer ones.

Whilst still crouched and hiding Lucas aimed his rifle at the Wolfheaded man. He wasn't eager to pick a fight with the Legion but if it came to that he wasn't going to be caught off guard. The Ranger continued speaking against them, what he found most curious was that this 'Vulpes' hadn't tried to cut him down yet.
What're you looking at me like that for? I'll shank you I will.

It wasn't long before the frustration of his exchange with the Ranger wore off the and the maddened efforts of his digging slowed to a pace be could more imaginably maintain over extended time. As he did Eddie noticed for the first time that the Follower, Jason, had not gone on with the other two as he had previously thought and was aiding in moving the bodies of the raiders towards where the graves were being dug.
Whether it was an act of pity for him or compassion for the death Eddies didn't know, though he liked to imagine it was the latter.
"Thank you Jason." The morning was yet cool but in digging the first of the graves so quickly he'd built up a thin film of sweat. He wiped at it blinking through the stinging haze as several droplets somehow managed to get in his eyes. "For at least caring.......if nothing else I could use the company."
The made quick progress between them and moved the bodies together trying not to look to intently at the blasted forms of the two raiders Max had obliterated with his large calibre sequoia's before moving on the dig the graves. Each being roughly a foot deep and wide enough to fit the bodies if they were lain down knee's to their chests. Soon the merciless sun rose over the jagged hills to the North and the Ranger and Mercenary passed from view cresting the rise several miles down the road. Work was harder then but the Follower and Surgeon persevered burying the last body and stepping back to admire their handiwork.
The graves were yet unmarked but the mounds were concealed somewhat by thin dessicated grasses and Yucca though were immediately obvious if one looked directly upon them. It was wrong though. He went from grave to grave drawing a small cross on each one in the way the Abbey had taught him.
If God was real perhaps he'd take pity on them all.
GÇ£I am a sojourner and foreigner among you; give me property among you for a burying place, that I may bury your dead out of my sight.GÇ¥ He recited altering the wording slightly, thinking of the bounty he had take from them the previous evening.
With Jason's help it had taken half the time to complete the task. They could move on guilt free up the I-15 and regroup with their companions in Nipton.
The last time he'd been through the town he'd wanted to linger. It had been a comfortable place full of everything a road weary traveller could have wanted for but his wanderlust had not adequately been sated until that homely bar in Goodsprings. NCR, Powder Gangers, hell he was sure he'd even seen a few Legionaires stalking around after dark one and all had been welcomed by the townspeople and it had been a thriving settlement. A small taste of paradise in an otherwise lifeless waste.
He returned to where he had left his pack and spear, shouldering them both.
"We are done here. Feeling up to a sojourn of our own?"

Jason helped Eddie as best he could, placing the bodies into the graves as Eddie dug them. It was strange burying people who meant him so much harm, but they were souls who could not be saved; they deserved some kind of closure. As he dragged the final body, the farthest away from the graves, he pushed it in having grown exhausted from pulling them. He listened to the prayer Eddie gave and there was a moment of silence after Eddie asked him if he had anything to say where he was not entirely sure if he could conjure anything in his mind. There were no books that prepared him anything like this.
"I don't know any structured prayers but..." He exhaled trying to find words in his mind. He remembered the one definite funeral he had attended when he had been younger, but the memory was a clouded by time and struggles. Every other second he opened his mouth to start but said nothing, unconvinced of whether he could actually say anything. Eventually he settled on a short phrase he had heard, perhaps from that same funeral that stuck out in his mind. "Earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust." He continued, a little emboldened by the jump start. "I knew not your names nor your hopes but I pray that as we commit you to the earth what peace avoided you in this life you may find in whatever next life exists."
Jason exhaled. It was awkward no doubt, but it had been the best he could come up with. He frowned, his thoughts a little muddled.
"I don't even know what to think sometimes. Everyone deserves closure but this is... I'm a Follower... I can't help but wonder if they could have been saved at some point." He touched the patch on his lab coat and frowned when another thought entered his mind. "What do you do with those who can't be saved?" he muttered the question. The answer to the question was in the graves before him. He knew it, but he couldn't accept it. Everyone could be saved...
Couldn't they?

Vulpes began to talk back to Max with a almost serpent like tone. "Ahh Maximus. Are you done with your little rebellion? Are you going to come back and receive your rank of Centurion? Or must I tell Caesar that Scorpion of Arizona has lost his Venom? The Malpais legate himself trained you before he was...taught a permanent lesson. But what of you?" Vulpes' voice almost dripped with sinister purpose as he purred ever so calmly while murderous atrocities were being carried out.
Max remained silent for a moment. Thinking back to his potential raise in rank. To one of the most fearsome warriors in the Legion. Max than spoke up, "Non timent faciem tauro scorpionis. The scorpion does not fear the bull. Nor do I fear the fox. I am not in any way rebellious, you are just simply glorified butchers. Those people might have been sinful, but they do not deserve such deaths. Are such crimes justified? Do their crimes outweigh the punishments you have inflicted upon them?"
Vulpes let out a quiet chuckle and in a similarly quiet voice spoke right back to Max. "This town is an example to the bear. To all that support the bear and to all that come from the bear. Do not act better than us just because you don't commit such crimes anymore. You have slain whole villages at the order of Caesar without remorse. Or have you already forgotten? Would make sense coming from someone that pities the profligates. This entire town is a den of snakes, thieves and prostitutes. Their death from your so-called "God" was imminent. We just simply did his bidding."
Max being at a loss of words was quiet. Stood there like he was dug into the earth. He paused like there was nothing. He was unsure of how to reply. After a minute of silence, Max replied simply, "Joshua would never kill those that would harm his children, so why do you if you claim to do the Lord's work?"
