If you hold still, literally everyone will headshot you.
If you move the slightest bit, shifting your feet in any way, the Sniper Rifle will sway and shake like crazy, even with max skills.
It is easier and faster to snipe with the forge gun because it remains steady when walking or strafing. This helps alleviate some of the fine aiming difficulties with the analog knob. You get your elevation right, and then walk left and right to aim, and it allows for some accurate long range shots.
I propose a buff to the Sniper Rifle skill, 20% reduction to crouched sway per level. At level 5 a crouching sniper will be able to crouch walk their weapon.

Really, the sniper rifle just isn't fun. Low rewards and painfully unforgiving aim mechanics. Sometimes I miss so many times in a row the enemies stop trying to evade. I would be laughing if I wasn't trying so hard to line up a headshot.

Agree that sway is whats holding sniping back from being anything but pure redline hugging
The fact is that as long as sniper mechanics reward you for sitting around in one position and punish you for being mobile, then sniping will disproportionately reward camping in one spot, and since camping in one spot is suicidal, you will end up with people camping in the redline, where only other snipers can kill them. |

Not sure about this one, feels like It would make sniping too easy. The sway isn't that much of an obstacle if you limit your movement. I have no problem finding good spots that hide me from view and give me angle to sit and snipe from, not needing to move at all, thus, the sway isn't going to bother me. I've had a 14-kill 0-death match sniping thit way.
If I get killed, it's because some had to look for me first. And It's just dumb getting close to the battle itself or sitting on top of a hill/tower where everyone can see you.
You don't have to worry about sway if you snipe smart. I fear this idea would turn sniping into This (skip to 0:23) |

I can agree that the sway is a bad mechanic but things would have to be seriously adjusted around removing it.
Additional kick, adjusted rate of fire, and zoom that increases over time are just some possible adjustments that could be used to keep sniper rifles from become all about quick scoping while making them more viable outside of the red line.

Yeah, the initial sway where you just have to wait is silly. If you move, it sways all over again. I agree about sway while running, so maybe we could have a movement threshold, where if you are going slow enough you will not sway when aiming. If you stop, crouch, and aim, it works as expected in every other FPS ever.

You can already "QuickScope" however it's not a simple as in games like COD. However I don't know why you would call us "dumbasses". If we can "Quickscope" you at 5-40 meters before you can kill us with an AR,RR,CR, etc. then you simply have no aim whatsoever.
So before you decide to go on a rant, have validation, because it seems you don't play the game enough to know what you're talking about.

I once got into a close combat with a red while sniping. I emptied my SMG and instead of reloading I switched to my sniper rifle that had one bullet still loaded and just blasted my opponent to death with a point-blank shot. It was awesome and fun. I sketched a comic, dramatizing that situation (my character shooting the sniper rifle with just one arm and flying ten meters backward from the kickback). I might finish that sometime.

The history of sniper sway in Dust is really colorful and is a result of much QQ from non snipers and snipers alike.
I realized we may have an issue so I went out and did some sniping tests. First test was to get up to high position and snipe down on targets running while adjusting in ADS to follow and lead. I got the impression that hitting a moving target was impossible or next to impossible anyways.
I agree the sway is way overdone on the sniper rifles. It needs to be toned down or the benefit of max sniping skills increased greatly. My skills in sniping are high enough to tame the snipe sway somewhat but they should be taming it more. In fact my belief is that adjusting my aim shouldn't cause my rifle to jig all over the screen but it does.
There are several ways to fix this, mostly taken from other game(s):
- Scopes, Bipods, Silencers and Muzzle brakes to improve control ability for snipers and other mercenaries*
- Adjust the code to limit the sway**
- Prone, Vault, and Cover options in movement***
*Attachments to weapons add customization key to generating more revenue in the AUR market as well as the Player market by adding more cost based on attachments to the weapons to improve control, range, damage and effectiveness for the player. If you want some idea of what this means download and play Ghost Recon Phantoms on Steam to see what these type of customizations can do for improving rifle performance.
**There is simply too much sway at any level of SP invested to make any sniper training worthwhile, the ION Pistol works better
***There have been many many threads about this over the last 4 years with good reason

In my opinion scouts and commandos don't have a problem with this since the former is stealthy and highly mobile while the latter can use a rail rifle and only bother sniping when the need arises and terrain permits. In other words, they don't have to camp for any longer than necessary and can get out of there when sniping is no longer possible.
Nah, I think snipers are fine. Just build a fitting that permits greater mobility and/or versatility. If that's not an option, use the laser rifle.

Just regarding the jumps comment, Vaulting is different than Jumping. What this means is that there would be more ability to use terrain as a mobility assistance rather than just stuff to bump into such as going over a rail on a catwalk (without myofibs on a fatsuit) to drop onto an enemy. Jumping relies on upward motion from legs, vaulting requires manipulation of your arms and legs together to lift yourself over an obstacle.
In reference to the responses to my post above reyours:
These options for movement would be useful if the said attachments were added and yeah I know sniper rifles are rail rifles but the concept is there, please for the love of god tell me that there is more than one person on these forums who believes that some sort of present->future tech may actually be possible in Dust.

Seems to me the sway when initially bringing up the scope is needed to avoid 'run - scope - headshot' style quickscoping.
The sway when you are already crouched and scoped and trying to move to avoid return fire as you pick off a target is unfair, especially since the range nerf designed to bring snipers closer to the battle.
Would removing the latter and keeping the former help? |

Good point about the vaulting. It gets silly when a sentinel can't get over an ankle-high girder. As for the silencer and muzzle brake: Railguns can't be feasibly silenced. The only sound is the projectile itself and the only way to silence it it to reduce projectile speed, use better flechettes or remove the atmosphere. And an open railgun has no gas pressure. There might be other ways to reduce recoil, but a brake wouldn't help at all.

Success! I know we haven't come up with a lot of new ideas, but I still like mine...no sway if crouched. Alternatively, if you are moving below 2m/s when you aim, or you move just a little while aiming, it doesn't simply start swaying around all crazy like.... "The damn stabilization gyros deharmonize with the slightest of positional updates."

MOG* has everything you are asking for. Dust doesn't. They are not the same game. Much as I enjoy the other I no longer wish for Dust to change.
Because I have given up.
The platform is too ancient, the game engine is as well. The entire connection with New Eden means that balanced game play was never a possibility, it just took me a long time to realize it. And adding all the features to a single class? Not going to happen. Well, I am learning not to say that. While I disagree with @CCP Rattati at least half the time, he is making progress. More so than any before him and since Uprising 1.0 was foisted off on us.
I play Dust to be with my friends. Some game play aspects are interesting.
But for serious get down and fight on fairly equal terms, MOG. First, last and always. There is no comparison.

My favorite tank is a Lightning. Just sayin.
