Alright, so I'm not a big guy at all. I'm basically 6ft tall and 147lbs but today I made myself a promise that I would become swoll!!!! Hit the gym knowing I wouldn't be as strong as I use to because of many injuries and broken bones which caused me to take it easy. Well anyway that sh*t was the most depressing feeling I had in my life 2nd only to my dog being given away. Every moment was like my muscles were concrete strings of wool slowly constricting into a solid form. Worse part was I went from bench pressing 180 to barely being able to lift 25's.....freaking 25's..... How the hell do you fat mofos do this crap without crawling into the fetal position?

And the terminology "swol"? Sounds like a disease. Actually, now that I think about it... only ridiculously skinny people use the term. Everyone else uses "pumped" or "bulked" yadda yadda. It's like the runty "gangster wannabe" version of the term.

Mass is about diet. If you want to get large eat a lot of meals with low carbs. Like 5-6 a day.
I recommend not getting "swol" though. Comfortably lean is best as far as women are concerned. |

I know my way around a gym and DUST and working out have a few things in common.
Right now you are like a new merc with no SP.
Growing your character takes patience and is done in very small increments, that if taken individually, is practically unnoticeable.
Benefits are measured in the long term, and are attained by steady work.
Success requires a mindset of accepting that there is no short term, instant gratification, but rather a larger payoff down the road.
Building a strong character in DUST requires the ability to see the big picture, set longer term goals, and have patience.
Working out is very similar.
No one gets in shape by going to the gym for a week, or once a week. It requires the ability to set a goal, stick with it, and measure the gains in small increments.
Good luck!

Sounds like youGÇÿvebeen bitten by the pre-summer bug, happens to a lot of people this time of year. The most important thing for you to be doing is lifting lighter weight with more repetitions , this will allow the tissue and ligaments the adjustment they need to avoid injury . I would also recomend starting with cardio work for at least a month to help build your energy level up. Don't start with heavy asz weight, I know it's tempting. I am a certified personal trainer so i'm not just poppin off at the mouth lol.

It's been 15 years since I worked out regularly, just bought a Bowflex so I could get back into shape without the mental hurdle of going to the gym and looking like an ass, plus I am lazy and its like 20 minutes to the nearest gym. Three days in and I am reveling in the fact of being sore from working out again.

I know a few actual gangsters who would disagree.
Meanwhile, you really only need weights to get you to the point where you can push bodyweight. Bodyweght technique is one of the fastest ways to build a solid form.

You 6'3 = O_O
I'm 5'9 135 and I only gain weight when I eat a crap load especially when I go Carbo load the week before a Half Marathon = :D
Although my mom wants me to go on a diet and I'm like >.>... " mom why do you worry about that... I'm not worried and heck I rarely get sick like 1 to 3 times a year and plus I've been doing this for the past 4 and a half years so I will not take your advice."
Somehow I just don't like going to the gym = ewww dirty and yuck. xD
I hope I get 6'1 by the time I turn 25. I'm 20 but act 17 = Good.

I was 6'4 155 all thru high school and most of my young adult life around that weight. I bulked up to 220 a few years back and definitely don't miss being skinny. I dont even lift weights anymore I just do boxing and body weight, pull ups etc. You gotta work to break out of that small phase lol

I really need to get that personal trainer I keep telling myself I need. Someone has to yell at me every so often otherwise I forget that I need to keep going.
Have to say that initial phase is the hardest part of the process. I sort of broke through that at one point and actually was pretty happy with myself. Then went to America on holiday and the gym habit and healthy eating went right out the window.
Trying to get back into that mentality as well speak.
Though I am covering myself fairly well with 20km bike rides every day.....but it's not substitute for actually going to the gym.

"80% of life is just showing up." This is the only Woody Allen derived workout advice I'll provide. In all seriousness, just getting to the gym is the often the biggest hurdle. I try to handle this by keeping my workouts fairly short, but intense (summarized below). Habit structure and default decision making are very powerful mechanisms. Try to plan/organize when you have energy to put organizational structures in place for when you are tired/stressed. The best gym is often the one that you pass on the way home from work/school. I can talk a bit about food choice/preference (my area of expertise and research) if you have any specific questions. I'm a neuroscientist by training, work doing food product optimization, and have been a gym rat my whole life.
-Aramis
My leg workout is just squats and dead lifts, with some cleans, box jumps and some knee stability work thrown in some times. My upper body workouts consist of a push from above the axis of the shoulder (military, handstand pushups, etc.), a push from below the axis of the shoulder (bench, incline, whatever), a pull from above the axis of the shoulder (usually weighted pull-ups) and a pull from below the axis of the shoulder (low rows, etc.). I'll do a little shoulder girdle work for stability as well as an exercise for those muscles innervated by the spinal accessory nerve (shrugs, etc.). I might do some more specific work if there is a weakness that I'm addressing or if I want to reward my self with a glory muscle exercise like some curls. I mix body weight and weighted exercises and use a periodization schedule with 3x4 week segments, with a light/rest week after. I'll do abs and burst cardio on my off days. |

Everyone is different.
When I first joined the Army I was 6' at like 130lbs. I had tried everything to gain weight and it never worked. Then within 3 months I was 20lbs heavier (180 lbs now). I actually was eating a little bit less than before. I guess my way to weight gain was stress + working out for at least 3-4 hours a day + angry people yelling at me.
You just gotta keep trying new things man.

First off start slow. You don't need to injure yourself.
You don't need to go low weights and high reps but don't push yourself either.
Don't do cardio. You need to gain weight and you can't do that by burning calories.
Lastly don't give yourself problems by having expectations starting out. Goals are good but they are not the same. Focus on the present and making the right coices now. The rest will fall into place.
