I've been playing for a bit but am stumped. I hate getting the 10 or so deaths when I run as infantry and the 4-6 deaths when trying to run as a tank (can't pilot dropships so I don't bother with them). So I've decided to turn to these forums for help.
I don't know how to keep my deaths low but also aid my team. This is what I've tried (as far as weapons and type):
Militia Assault Scrambler Rifle, Militia Minmatar Medium Armor, uplinks (did ok, still about 6-15 deaths)
Sniper rifle, uplink, Militia Min Light (can't keep targets in sight)
Forge gun, Militia Min heavy (get better k/d ratio with a typical 6/8)
Militia heavy gun, Mil Min heavy (decent with I think, just die before I can get in range and cover)
I have tried all the militia weapons and those four are what I've noticed I do ok with. My playstyle is that I like playing somekind of field support.
Tested supports:
Sniper Tank- haven't figured out how to more accurately hit infantry and get slammed by swarms
Infantry Tank- overwhelmed in tank v tank fight, swarm problem
Medic- seem to die before being able to reach downed teammate
The vehicles I seem to do ok with are:
HAVs- I can control them pretty good (if I couldn't that would be sad lol), can keep track of targets ok, swarms lay me out
LAVs- still working on control, outmanuever enemy vehicles & installations, swarms typically miss me, usually get terrible gunners
Vehicles I'm terrible with:
Dropships- Can't control them (even with the how to video I saw on youtube)
If anyone can give me some pointers or tips it would be greatly appreciative.
To further showcase my style: on most other shooter games, I usually use an lmg like the Saw. I like to kind of act as a suppression fire soldier.

Early on I'd suggest slapping a weapon like the militia combat rifle on a militia caldari heavy frame, fitting that with a shield recharger and an armor repairer, then setting to work on getting shield and armor upgrades skills up a bit.
A big portion of the 'problem' with the starter fits is that they have almost no hp and will die to a stern look. If you'd like to mail me in game I could answer some stuff for you there, or if you have a mic I could speak with you directly.
I'd also recommend staying far away from sniper rifles - they are 95% of the time bad and lead to bad play habits, but everyone flocks to them anyways because of the 'romanticism' attached to snipers. Tanks also require incredible amounts of sp and knowledge to use well, honestly just avoid them.

What advantages and disadvantages does the Militia Caldari Heavy Suit have over the Militia Minmatar Suit?
(Been running Minmatar because of the whole former slaves that freed themselves, I like rebels lol)
But mentioning Caldari, I used to run one but terminated it because of skill mess up (which I did again with Minmatar). But I did notice that I survived better with Caldari, why though? I do the same thing on both but died less as a Caldari than with Minmatar. |

Might be the lower delays on the Caldari suits. That and larger shield regen, but we have little to no armor, so be wary of that fact.
Like Mina said, use a Militia Assault Combat Rifle. If you're running Minmatar, use it in a heavy suit to begin with while you work on your shield/armor skills. Your core skills should suffice, the ones that unlock the modules will be saved for later.
Once you get the hang out it, try the different frames, see what you prefer. The Assault and Commando are petty good, and the Sentinel is agile. But, as I would suggest, hold off on any skills in dropsuits till you know what you like to use.

Yea, I did read that the Minmatar suits had ok armor and ok shield, Caldari had low armor high shield, and Amarr had high armor and low shield (did some reading :))
But yea, kinda dumped some skills in heavy and medium (accidentally put some in Gall light, game got goofy when that happened). But thanks for the help, I'll try that out on my Militia Minmatar Heavy (have 40 suits of it). |

I would think that Militia Amarr Heavy would be the best coming out.
Just realize you have to stick with a team, and stay out of the open, especially when by yourself.
Early on, just expect death.
I still die as much as you (a lot of it has to do with my role/play style).
Also remember there are other ways of support, like hacking, repairing wounded blueberries, laying hives and uplinks etc.
Long term, if support is really what your style is, consider the Logi suits, which are considered the primary support class.

You need to be in a squad, one of your guys needs to be running "Active Scanners", this item paints the enemies on the radar for your team. This is why you are dying, you do not know where anyone is.

The shield recharge on the militia caldari heavy makes it easily superior, especially when you don't have access to the huge offsets provided by complex armor repairers or people providing remote armor repair that armor suits 'need'. The 4/1 delay is generally enough to keep you alive through almost anything as long as you play to your strengths with cover.

Thank you for the advise. I did notice I'm better in Caldari armor. Had thought of terminating my Minmatar (made some mistakes with skills) but since I'm in a corp I didn't think it would be fair to terminate my character. |

Good work!
Heavy frames are good for new players but I would caution against speccing into them as more advanced equipment. Higher tier medium frames can be much more flexible whilst also offering you similar levels of strength.

Yep. It's slower, has a larger hitbox, and lacks equipment, though, amongst other things. It's a good newbie suit though because it's cheap and cheerful and doesn't require much.

Turns out, it was because the other team was militia also. Fought protos and was quickly killed. But I expected that.
The only problem I'm having is finding a weapon I'm ok with. One with a decent range, ok firing rate, and ok with fire surpression.
Vehicles is different, I already found what I'm good with. HAVs :)
LAVs are too squishy, easily destroyed, and Dropships I can't fly, I always crash.
But I am close to being able to buy a Caldari Assault dropsuit. Just waiting on isk and getting better mods, equips, and weapon. (Did find out I'm an ok sniper, just takes me longer than others to line up my shot. But not my favorite things to do) |

A good all around weapon?
You're probably wanting the CR. The RR and SCR have finicky mechanics and the AR is probably too short range for you. The AR does have a lot of variants though.
Be careful before investing into the Calassault. It's a big SP investment, make sure it's what you want.

Whichever fit you go with, train yourself to use cover as much as possible. Get used to breaking off before you get the kill if you are taking too much damage. If you don't want to die you will need to take cover to recover often in the middle of fights. If you try to stick it out for the kill, you will either die or be left with so little health that someone else will down you before you have a chance to get to cover. Instead, take cover when your shields go down, as a general rule. (Varies a bit depending on fit.)
If you go with the HMG, then use your sidearm for anything over 20m away. I recommend the SMG as it is very steady when fully skilled. The Magsec SMG has a much longer range, which is a good pairing with the short rang HMG, but the Magsec has quite a kick which makes it harder to aim. If your aim is good, and you are good with semi automatic weapons, then some of the pistols might work well for you.

Also consider weapon pairs. Sometimes a sidearm can make up for some of the deficiencies of your main weapon.

Well, you're on the right track with your fits. I'll try to diagnose some of what you said.
You're saying your issue with the HMG is that you get killed before you get in range with it. Until you're confident you're safe to advance, an HMG heavy should just sit on an objective where everyone that attacks it will already be in your range.
With HAVs, cover is king. Yeah, it's a ******* tank, but you should still use big rocks and buildings to protect yourself from swarms and other HAVs.
I don't even know what to say about dropships: they've had their maneuverability nerfed so many times now that I thought anyone could pilot them. You should've seen them in closed beta: they were accurately described to handle like "a concrete block with a rocket on the bottom of it". But DAMN that baby could cross the entire map in no time at all. On accident.
Some details can be ignored

I did a few test battles with my new fitting, Cal Assault with a CR. Actually did ok with it. Stuck to cover and popped out long enough to fire then back in to cover to reload and recharge. Took on 3 Mins at once, and beat them all with a grenade and snart firing from cover. :) |

Because he was advised to until he found something he actually wanted to skill into. It might come as a surprise, but the amount of depth and customisation thrown at people early on can be incredibly overwhelming and lead to them avoiding spending SP for fear of making mistakes.... or to them spending sp poorly because they think it's like other games where all you need to do is upgrade your gun.

Mina Longstrike, this is about the BEST comment of wise words I've read from the Forum in a long time. Makes me want to hold back tears and start a thread of Immortal Words of Dust Wisdom. More players need to know that period of time when you should IMMERSE yourself in toms of Militia exploration----and then recognize the tipping point when you need to aggressively AVOID having Militia-anything diminishing your suit.
Kudos, Mina.

The frontline suits with drop uplinks can be quite useful if you know how to place uplinks in useful spots. But yeah, I'm not sure if matchmaking has been flubbing or what because newer players like yourself should end up fighting proto. Unless it's your corpmate pulling you into a higher tier bracket.
I had thought about inviting you to a squad to get a few matches in, but then I went 'Oh right, I fight @SSHOLES all day long... New people shouldn't be subject to that'.
To my knowledge the dev-team is always gathering information on new player experiences and it would probably help them out a lot if you did just a simple log of your battles and stuff you were encountering / finding hard to deal with in general discussions.
