Early on I'd suggest slapping a weapon like the militia combat rifle on a militia caldari heavy frame, fitting that with a shield recharger and an armor repairer, then setting to work on getting shield and armor upgrades skills up a bit.
A big portion of the 'problem' with the starter fits is that they have almost no hp and will die to a stern look. If you'd like to mail me in game I could answer some stuff for you there, or if you have a mic I could speak with you directly.
I'd also recommend staying far away from sniper rifles - they are 95% of the time bad and lead to bad play habits, but everyone flocks to them anyways because of the 'romanticism' attached to snipers. Tanks also require incredible amounts of sp and knowledge to use well, honestly just avoid them.

Just realize you have to stick with a team, and stay out of the open, especially when by yourself.
Early on, just expect death.
I still die as much as you (a lot of it has to do with my role/play style).
Also remember there are other ways of support, like hacking, repairing wounded blueberries, laying hives and uplinks etc.
Long term, if support is really what your style is, consider the Logi suits, which are considered the primary support class.
The shield recharge on the militia caldari heavy makes it easily superior, especially when you don't have access to the huge offsets provided by complex armor repairers or people providing remote armor repair that armor suits 'need'. The 4/1 delay is generally enough to keep you alive through almost anything as long as you play to your strengths with cover.

Feel free to chat with me in game, I've been working (slooooowly) on a caldari guide and I could help highlight key skills for sp allocation.

I've always kind of felt that a mlt cal heavy spoofs the hp and gameplay of a well invested cal assault.

Because he was advised to until he found something he actually wanted to skill into. It might come as a surprise, but the amount of depth and customisation thrown at people early on can be incredibly overwhelming and lead to them avoiding spending SP for fear of making mistakes.... or to them spending sp poorly because they think it's like other games where all you need to do is upgrade your gun.

(Get put into fights with protos so I go militia sniper since it's cheaper and I know I'll die quite often) (Killed 2 snipers about 2 times each and an infantry once in my last batttle for the night, with corp squad with 2 others, one being a sniper too)
The frontline suits with drop uplinks can be quite useful if you know how to place uplinks in useful spots. But yeah, I'm not sure if matchmaking has been flubbing or what because newer players like yourself should end up fighting proto. Unless it's your corpmate pulling you into a higher tier bracket.
I had thought about inviting you to a squad to get a few matches in, but then I went 'Oh right, I fight @SSHOLES all day long... New people shouldn't be subject to that'.
To my knowledge the dev-team is always gathering information on new player experiences and it would probably help them out a lot if you did just a simple log of your battles and stuff you were encountering / finding hard to deal with in general discussions.
