If Dust University had done a better job. Would new player retention be better?
I only bring this up because numerous seasoned Dust University claim a great contribution to the growth and development of new players. However, there aren't any quantitative numbers to really prove or disprove this.
I would really love to hear from previous members of Dust Uni who have moved on to bigger and better things.

Yes, I'm sure the low player count is because of a helpful in-game player run corp and not poor handling of Dust on CCP's part...

I agree with Riley on this. I'm a firm believer that new players get too much pain too fast after the Academy so they quit. I started my first Dust character in 2013(Stonewall 1863), and quit for awhile also because it was lose lose lose and die die die, lol. I however loved the premise so I came back and suffered to get better. If players had more time to link pleasure to Dust I believe numbers woulda been higher. That's on CCP tho, not a Corp imo.

Here is my point fellas,
Dust Uni is often commended for helping the new player experience, yet the new player pop has always been in shambles sense day one (I'm a dinosaur)
Personally, If my whole Corp's entire focus was on helping the new guy out. Then some type of notice improvement (even if its slight) would be shown. It's not. |

Instead of having players start out in NPC corps have them start out in 1 player ran corp, make it so it can't have a tax rate, farming newbros isn't cool. Then all new players will be in the same corp and can get a squad and friends that way.. Right now you spread them out in npc corps that can't even use corp chat. |

The players who get recommended to apply to Dust Uni are part of a small portion of the population who actively seek help. That is a tiny fraction of the playerbase. A vastly greater portion of the playerbase quit WAY before they ever thought to ask for assistance. They quit because of getting stomped due to bad matchmaking, bugs, a complete lack of tutorial, ****** NPE, lack of core gameplay features like PvE, and a myriad of other things.

You can't just bash a corp helping new players without having a frame of reference.
I believe Kevall gave that information on EVE TV over FF, and the retention rate for DU was much higher than that of those that don't participate.
It seems like an incredible stretch and that you feel you need to blame someone other than CCP. To be honest, I think that corps who ran coordinated proto stomps in pubs pre MM had WAY more to do with new players not staying than whatever failure if D Uni you perceive.

I don't think D-Uni could have done anymore than what they did. The Uprising Era was just full of too much frustrating bullsh!t left and right for there to be any meaningful new player retention. Hell, even vets quit the game because of it and people think a new player is going to want to put up with it x100? Only if they're not sober; hell that's the only reason a lot of us are still here, we're rarely sober when we play.

I believe the question is:
Do organizations like DUST uni catch and filter enough newbros to put an actual dent in retention/loss ratios.
the answer is probably yes and no.
Yes they catch a few nubs, but I imagine that's mostly because they make their first sh*tpost on the forum or say something stupid in local chat when a uni member happens to be in. Often joining squads can help if the players want to listen (God knows my patience has been tested with idiots who think CoD logic applies in the squad finder).
No, because your average rank newbie doesn't have any resources to filter in who will help them, or even that they NEED help.
So they catch quite a few. But a lot of new players pop in and vanish so fast that you never have a chance to catch them in the newbie net, much less teach anything.
It might work better if there were veteran "instructors" in the BA and the BA lasted longer, kinda like ISDs in EVE. But DUST Uni generally does help where they can. I should know. I've had a couple spy alts "trained" by them.

Well, as an average player that plays alone, I can assure that dust is very frustrating for the average joe that wants to log in, play a few games and log out. University might help you get your bearings but I don't think it fixes the issue of try hards famring 24/7 in squads vs randoms. |

What was DUST University supposed to do that they didn't already do? They give advice, play together, and are decent people.
I don't think they could have done anything else. The game is really lopsided on the brutal:good ratio, making it user unfriendly and also not being good enough on it's own to make it worth powering through the brutality. Something like Demon's/Dark Souls might be all about being oppressively difficult and hard to get into but the games are generally good, which still evens out the ratio. DUST is hard to get into, doesn't explain a damn thing, keeps punching you in the groin, demands that you put in a lot of time to get any kind of edge, and is just barely worth playing overall.
Speaking honestly: if you had to totally start over, zero SP, zero ISK, would you still play the game? I started when it was "Advanced Stomping", being just a months experience away from the most veteran player. If I started now where I had 40, 60, 100 times less SP than the average person and had to endure the "I have thrice your HP, I see you before you see me, and I deal 30% more damage", I don't think I would play. So if you can assume that I am knowledgeable about the game and we assume that DUST Uni were able to inform the new players to that degree, I still don't think our numbers would have been higher.
Also, it is a hell of a thing to put any of the 'blame' on a player organization that exists to help people for DUST having very few new players.

I started 8 months ago, right when 1.8 finished it''s lifetime and Rattati took over. For me, I made millions of alts to test out new weapons (no I was not farming academy, testing weapons) and settled on trying Gallente Light Frames and Militia Shotgun since I searched DUST 514 up on youtube and got that. I saw how OP the shotgun was, and assumed it was like that. So I got over it. I only played weekends, so it was never unbearable. The 100k a week really inspiring to give me new things to skill, etc. Maybe increase passive SP gain per week for new players until a certain time or limit?
Also, corp chat isn't gone, it's just so many people, that the chat does the thing where you don't see a player there until they talk, so it looks like a wasteland and no one talks there.

Until the most recent changes to starter fits, the academy was pretty much everyone shooting people with assault rifles.
The lack of diversity in the starter suits is what killed the new player base.
Anyone from the closed tests remembers when there was a starter heavy fit, and even in the closed beta you had one of each suit to start out with instead of 4 starter assault suits that included a sniper and swarms...

I remember watching Moody's vids back when I was a newb and thinking 'I wish I could join 0uter.Heaven...' After almost a year of hard work, I achieved my goal!
And you know what? It all started with Dust University. If Dust University hadn't existed, I don't know if I'd still be here...
Conclusion: Dust University has done a great job at retaining and training new players. They could only do so much though, due to the many flaws in Dust's NPE. I think that without corps like Dust University and Immortal Guides, our playerbase would be considerably lower.

I suppose the balancing question is what would player retention be like without DU, learning coalition and all the other mercs & corps who have tried to bring new players on board.
In the face if CCP's willful idiocy no amount of player commitment will be enough to save the game.
