It takes a long time to get into IMO. The better part of a year to have the required skills to even do basic PvP. Moreover the game is much less forgiving than Dust. Do something stupid in High Sec and Concord or CODE will gank you, **** up in lowsec and a pirate of enemy FWer will wreck you, go to nullsec and most people will try to gank you.

But really, it's almost a challenge to like the game when you first start out. i quit after the first time i tried and only started again because of clan mates that were playing. have been active since then.
Best advice i could give you is, don't try EVE alone. join an active EVE corp(Not a dust corp where you are a solo EVE player)

It's a VERY slow progressing game, if you would like to skip all that.. you have the option to shell out a few hundred bucks on Plex and sell them, then use that isk to purchase a high SP character ( fkn weak sauce to do that , but eh it's your choice and it's there).. plus you would have a nice character and not know **** to do with it haha.
I love the sandbox that is eve, it can be quite dull if you let it, but quite fun if you put in some effort and get creative. I'd join a corporatiion right when you start that helps new players out. One that understanmds what being new is like and willing to help and guide you along, and one that does a mix of things. Maybe Dust University for start.
I never did that , I just jumped in and got blown up a bajillion and one times and learned the hard rugged way , lol. I found that to be much more rewarding actually looking back at it. |

Get in a good active corp that you like the people in who like the same aspects of the game you do. I found that corp in my early years of EVE but after it broke up I haven't found the same experience and though my accounts are currently active I don't play much. It didn't help that by the time I got my characters to where I wanted them I was out of college and headlong into the real world. I have a PVP character that could fly a dread if I could afford the skill book while my indy characters can build a small fleet every six days to support him yet short of a corp like my first I have no ambition to play.

However, it depends on how well you can handle a game that doesn't give you very much direction and is full of people who aren't very nice.

I'll just wait for Star Citizen. I have pledged for that game. However, it is specifically designed NOT to be as open and player-driven as EVE Online, so I definitely won't be "switching" or anything like that.
Also, I only went for a starter pack because I consider the Persistent Universe to be vapourware until proven otherwise.

EVE IS NOT DUST. It is not an FPS. It is not fast twitch, epeen, leaderboard, runny, jumpy, shooty crap. It is a slow burn, resource based game. Combat is incidental to isk making and buying stuff. If you prefer that then it is for you.
I liked the slow burn, live in a virtual space world aspect. However, the non immediate combat aspect sucks. You could have immediate combat, but it is manufactured out of boredom because it is player based. PVP doesn't exist unless players make it exist. This means you are, as most other players, just tooling around and creating cheap excuses for combat that have no significant value other than just to shoot at something.
You like gathering resources and crafting stuff? Welcome to Minecraft: EVE Edition.

Indeed. One thing about EVE you notice on really early is that it is a really, really big place. It's a much more pleasant experience to be in a position where you have guidance, a purpose, etc.

"EVE is a Facebook game that requires a lot of investment."
I don't mean this as an insult; it really is the best way I can explain the game and I mean it with all the respect and admiration in the world. Allow me to expand on that.
The game is cripplingly boring in PVE. There is no skill in doing it really. You get your ship, you start the mission, you potentially look online to see what the mission entails to put on the proper modules of your ship, and you do it. Combat is pressing F1 and waiting for something to die. PVP is much the same. Unless you are the Fight/Flight Commander, you are just listening to instructions on who to fire in a big battle. The people involved in "The Bloodbath at B-R5RB" were generally "F1 Monkeys." The FC calls out targets, the people target that person, they press F1. It isn't like most other MMO where there is finesse to be made at the lower level of PVP. The best way I can describe it is "imagine if you are playing Hearthstone at the highest level but Trump/Forsen/top player was telling you, explicitly, what moves to make." At the low level of PVP where you might just be watching a gate for something to come through with your three of your friends, I would describe it as "watching a river and when a fish comes by, shooting it with a shotgun." This leaves out "potentially waiting 8 hours for said fish."
The Facebook aspect, as I mentioned above, is because the game is entirely socially driven. In WoW, you can get by in a big guild by never saying anything and not really being known. EVE is all about being known, making a name for yourself, and moving up. The amount of things that players are able to do such as sovereignty, totally player created market, and just the entire macrocosm of EVE is staggering.
I think EVE is best seen as an outside observer, at least that is how I most enjoy it. I can watch things like Rooks and Kings with an appreciation of what is happening without actually having to do it. You can find enjoyment in the game. Listening to Not Purple, Shoot It presentation last year made me realize that there really are ways to get into the game even without all that effort providing you are not looking to truly conquer the stars.
The Lore in the game is breathtaking in it's scope, complexity, and verisimilitude. My quick thing about the lore and story is "I hate the fact that something so great is saddled onto something so boring; it deserves to on television or in a movie." You could easily do a Game of Thrones style thing with EVE.
I dislike playing the game for the above reasons. When I play a game, I want to have fun. EVE really isn't that 99% of the time for me. But I love what EVE allows people to do and I am happy it exists. It is why I like the idea of what DUST/Legion/"New Eden FPS" could be. Keep all the stuff that makes EVE great while scaling the game for useability and having more interesting game play.
I will say this: there are people in EVE that are literally Space Truckers. I have seen them in Vegas in special shirts. They play the game by making deals for ferrying goods across New Eden. The only thing I can say is that these people must be James Bond or something and just need the least exciting aspect of the game in order to calm down. Of course, it isn't the loading and traveling that is the game to them; it is the making contracts and deals with people.
Thus: "EVE is a Facebook game that requires a lot of investment."
"This is B.S! This is B.S! I paid money! Cash money, dollars money, cash money!"

I started PvPing day one, got rekt, still getting rekt one year in, I love it.
I guess I'm the kind of guy that just works with a game like EVE. I can't be bothered doing spreadsheets, I don't give a **** about min-maxing 300mill ISK/hr or quitting because I can't PLEX 10 AFK-Ishtar farming accounts, I don't worry about my killboard stats. I just seek awesome, adrenaline-pumping fun fighting in ultra-cheap frigates in FW, and I find it. When I go poor I grind up a little ISK and repeat.
One person will never be able to tell you the full story of EVE. One forum thread asking people what EVE is isn't enough either. Hell, playing EVE won't give you the full picture of EVE. It's a game that leaves you a story to tell, one unique compared to every other player, unlike the other RPGs with shallow storylines that throw you in with the rest as 'the good guys'.
I did get burnt out for a bit but I'm back now (to the detriment of my DUST playtime). CCP's games have that sticking quality, I suppose.

If you REALLY enjoy pvp, win or lose, Eve is quite possibly the best game there is. Joseph is right when he says the bigger battles are just "F1 Monkeys" be directed by an FC, but the smaller battles are where the fun is. I spent roughly 2 years in null-sec, and it was the best pvp I have ever experienced. Counter and counter-counter measures are what make the game so exciting. I ran mostly ewar and logistics, so I didnt really need to sync dmg with the others. My job was to counter their ewar or keep my crew alive.
I think the lack of (real) ewar in dust is one of the things that disappoint me the most. A new guy can throw a warp disruptor on a frigate in Eve and be a real threat, whereas in dust, the only threats come from rifles and explosions.
If you dont enjoy pvp, tactics, and meta games, dont play eve. Mining has got to be the most boring thing I have ever done in a video game and the PvE is just slightly less monotonous.

I would agree with this. Look for the NPC Null sec areas. These are 0 security space but not sovereignty space (Supposedly NPC pirate factions hold sovereignty in these areas). You will find smaller Corps doing PVP in NPC Null Sec and can find fights in the 6 to 30 player range. These are the funnest battles as the Fleet Commander does not have to be as controlling in the smaller fleets and individuals have a lot more impact on the outcome of the battles.
I spent a most of 2012 in Syndicate Region and had a lot of fun fights. Sometimes you end up in fights involving 3 to 5 unrelated fleets and things get really interesting.
When I first started doing PVP in EVE the adrenaline and nerves would make my hands shake so much I could barely hit the buttons. I never experienced that in any other games.

What makes EVE great is that the stakes are much higher in the risk vs. ISK department. Losses can hurt a lot more, which really amps up the adrenalin. Not all combat is just clicking F1 either. In the beginning it's pretty basic, but it can ramp up to being much more complicated. Good pilots will manually fly instead of just clicking "orbit." Trying to maintain position, manage modules, capacitor, heat, ammo, boosters, while constantly reevaluating the threats around you is very intense.
RvB is a good choice if you're looking for PvP. As for PvE, you could get into low, null, or wormhole exploration. That's more of a cat/mouse play style where you're trying to get as much ISK as you can while evading people are trying to scan you down and gank you.
Best PvE idea ever!

Only if you're highly social and enjoy a fairly slow in game experience. EVE is great, but requires a specific type of person to really enjoy it.
If immersion is what you're after, wait for SC, but EVE definitely has it's appeal as well. It's far too slow paced / socially oriented for my liking, though pvp is faster paced sort of.

To sum it up quickly.... EVE is an amazing and complex game that is TOTALLY worth getting into if you have....
1. A lot of patience. 2. A lot of free time (I mean a lot!) 3. Are a big fan of spaceships / sci fi settings.
To go further into it.....
Eve has a crazy amount of stuff to offer a player and contrary to popular belief, PVP can be fun, engaging and fast paced..... as long as you are in small fights and not part of a massive blob fest.
Playing as a logistics pilot in eve small gang fights is hardcore intense! -Micro managing your range to stay in range of friendly pilots to repair them while staying far enough away from enemy as to not get caught or killed. - Micro managing your capacitor to keep your speed up, your reps going constantly and possibly more active modules. If your cap drains, you are screwed.
It just requires that you are not the type to give up easily...... this is the way of EVE from my experience.

Absolutely. The trick to EVE is to surround yourself with people that you like and doing group activities.
Awhile back I was doing some ratting out in Delve and me and a buddy would run 8/10 DED sites and we would both run them together, 1-3 a day or so. I'd bring my utility Dominix with remote reps and cap transfers and he would bring a Legion around and kill all the small stuff while I get the battleships with my Geckos.
It was probably doable solo but doing it with a friend made it much more tolerable, especially scouting through 6+ jumps through NPC nullsec in a blingy battleship.
I think the most fun thing we did was me in my Dominix, same guy in a Bhaalgorn with remot cap transfer, a kity shield Ishtar and a Vargur all doing an 8/10. Still took forever to kill the central bastion and the payout was barely 30M split but it was a ton of fun.

One day after a nice WeeWoo fleet (Police Pursuit Comets) we were doing some deplexing in Auga.
I say on comms "Gonna go check out the medium plex" I warp, see a frigate in dscan I take the gate and notice that it's unmanned.
This was after the combat recon changes where they no longer show up on dscan so I quickly warp off.
My guess is this guy was just coming back after leaving a ship there as a bait and he would sit inside with his dscan immune Lachesis.
I let everyone know on comms and I warp back to the medium plex. He lands at the same time as me but he warped 20 off. I burn in and point him, and tell everyone on comms to warp to me. "Lachesis tackled at the medium gate"
kill
He died as I had 3% structure. I absolutely love the group aspects of the game.
