Matchmaking is difficult to make well with small player pool. The pool is small because we are spread between many game modes and servers.
Splitting that further between player skill groups makes a HUGE challenge.
I've found two things since yesterday:
- Many known off-region players visiting others servers
- Much more near 'instagibs', meaning you get killed by a normal rifle in half or third of the time it usually takes to die (compared to when you shoot or get shot on home servers)
The latter is a sign of high ping or server latency. The first is self-explanatory.
Even though I support the devs not giving details on matchmakers logic to minimise forum hassle on testing stage, and prevent possible abuse, the cross-region mixing is not a small detail but a larger gameplay related issue.
[QUESTION:] Did CCP give the matchmaking logic the preference over player selected regions?
Looking at both sides of the coin.

I was questioning that and other things too. A lot of ranting about kicks were going on so I thought maybe the new matchmaking is region based so foreigners don't get possible lag kills so if they're not in the right server for their region they get kicked.
or Vets are trying to squeeze through the cracks in a squad with a newbie leader trying to get in newb matches and getting kicked for it, causing all of them to leave.
But there is also the thing where a lot of people hated the train map and rage quit while they're in a squad.
4/1/2015 at 3:05pm history was made. CCP Rattati announced the new matchmaking system.

Maybe coincidence but i've been noticing more lag on the train station map. Against better players it makes a huge difference. May start regular reboots of the PS3 again.

No, the system already tries to minimize ping and nothing on our end shows average ping going up.

ping was horrific under the old system, the fact that it isnt going down means its not even attempting to maximize ping (or it cant due to some other restriction)
forgeign players have been playing on the US server for the longest time causing massive problems for that playerbase... if average ping isnt going down then the matchmaker isnt making any impact on that particular front for some reason.

It was said, that the SL region will pull a squad into his region, that may be the reason sometimes. So Squads make sure, that the SL is from the region the most members are from, to minimize these problems.
I myself prefer not to run in squads with SLs from the americas (at least not the west coast guys) since that brings a lot of lag for me as a EU player... |

the problem is some corps purposly pull themselves into the US server....when they should be in the asia server.
up against these guys its a damn slideshow for me as my internet isnt great to begin with.

Well, only solution for that is to pull the server selection from the options...

Well I wouldn't see it that strict, and a lot of corps have people from different regions. For us Euros it seems to be OK, to play with US east coast guys, but it worsens quite a bit as soon as the US west coast guys or south/middle americans get in the same matches.
But it's also largely dependent of the individual connections, I had severe problems with people from the EU, who just have absolute crappy internet connections (mostly if they are at the max distance to their DSLAM). This can't be solved whatsoever, since you can't improve a crappy line! |

Alright, cool, thanks for the answer.
It's entirely possible that people are just wandering around regions to find 'better' games now.

Also, I appreciate that because that is exactly how it's supposed to be, to minimise lag.

All well and good for the Americans, Asians and Europeans.
But us Kiwis and Australians have no server thanks to you guys. Oceanic was shut down thanks to everyone else using it for SP and ISK farming. So suck it up, you caused this now you must handle the consequences.

Well, I guess no one can honestly say that was the real reason to shut them down. Cost cuts, I say. The 'afk farming problem' over there was just a cover up and an easy scapegoat.
But that does not matter anymore.

Wouldn't call it a scape goat when there were full matches filled with afkers...

Yes as it was presented as "because of Oceanic servers there is afk farming and we want to fix it" source

I remember counting 13 people in the MCC every other day(about?) on the Oceanic servers. Dark days those were.
But there was one game where there were 11 afk and 2 active on my team, and 15 active on the other team. They saw the mass afkness. SO the other team lined up, and took turns pistol dueling the 2 of us. That was cool I guess.
But, OP, I am confused. Is this thread about ping? Population? Or about some perceived advantage foreigners have over home team when playing on their servers? |

This thread was quite simply about:
Are players from all regions mixed in the new matchmaking or not. The answer was no. End of story.

So here's a question. Suppose we removed the ability to choose servers and everyone was on automatic? Just spitballing here.
Therefore, never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.
