... Does anyone else feel like the Gallente Assault proficiency is basically necessary to use it against strafers?
Seriously, the dispersion, as well as the recoil, on that thing feels ridiculous and overwhelming when coupled with the heat up mechanic.
So to anyone that says the Gallente Assault proficiency is useless, I totally disagree.

I seem to see it being used pretty frequently, although I've never had any luck with it (admittedly I've fitted it all of three times and only actually attacked someone with it twice).
Guys, we need to stop calling MU a 'matchmaker' when it's actually a 'teambuilder'.
And I want to play FE:A now. Damn.

A weapon needs to be able to stand up on its own before bonuses.
The Ion Pistol does not compare well to the others when you consider that the majority of your DPS is wasted due to shots never being on target, and the charge shot is a gamble at best.
If your weapon needs a bonus to be on par with other weapons, the weapon is broken.

The Ion Pistol is the best sidearm for close-quarters one on one engagements. To use it efficiently you have to know when to charge shot and when to spam fire. Unfortunately, Cat Merc was right. The officer Ion Pistol is underwhelming and there is very little reason to use it over the proto Ion Pistol. Maybe I'm just conditioned to seeing a huge leap from proto to officer like for the plasma cannon. |

I remember when I first skilled into the Ion Pistol I joined a match that was about to end and killed you twice with the standard Ion Pistol. Pure luck shot because you were strafing mad and we were at the Gallente Research Facility. I was stressed too cause you were using the Bolt Pistol. Match ended with me killing you twice and you killing me once.
Pretty interesting match.

The Ion pistol is broken in other ways too, one of the few weapons that doesn't have an absolute range, that is, no damage is registered beyond the effective range marking.

Just because some mercs go the extra mile to be good with it doesn't make it good.
You don't even need points into the bolt pistol for it to F you up.

Also the range is bad, the dispersion is wide and the semi auto is ok.
In all honesty I prefer the Assault Scrambler Pistol because it's consistent against high HP enemies. The Ion Pistol is good against fast and low HP enemies because it can usually finish them off, but it struggles a lot against high HP enemies particularly those with high armor.
I know what you're thinking: ' the Scrambler Pistol struggles more against Armor'. On paper that's true, but in my experience the low dispersion of the standard Scrambler Pistol more than makes up for the decreased damage to armor. The Assault Scrambler Pistol also does well because of its rate of fire. The Burst Scrambler Pistol is bad at hip fire but does MAD damage when you ADS and is my preferred Sniper sidearm. The Breach of course has a potent head shot. Bolt Pistol is amazing as long as you hit, which isn't as difficult as one would think. The Flaylock just destroys people (Take off shields and half of armor with CRand then spam the GN-13).
So why do I even use the Ion Pistol? Mostly because I want to keep my Gallente Assault as racially correct as possible. If I just wanted versatility then the Scrambler Pistol would be my weapon of choice.

The overheat on it is so non existent its laughable at best plus the dispersion is good enough to accurately enough to kill a player within 15m.

I understand that the Ion Pistol is intended for short range, it's not that the absolute range is short, on the SDE (mFireMode0.absoluteRange) it's marked as -1, to me it looks like a mistake,
Take the following examples Militia Shotgun ABS range: 20m Militia Scrambler Pistol: 125m Militia Bolt Pistol: 125m
Ion Pistol does not do damage beyond effective range.

In fact, I'm noticing a trend whereas the armor damage sidearms are consistently better than the shield damage ones... This is broken. By their very nature armor damage sidearms will be preferable backup or finisher weapons, but being outright better as well?

Nope. I was using the Viz ScR and the Black Eagles Assault Rifle combo the other day and may god when I ran out of ScR rounds that Plasma Rifle just kept me alive killing things.
I think the whole 70 rounds in a magazine is more than enough to keep it effective against strafers.

But even at max efficiency, without a Gal Assault, would you say the IoP is subpar?
Most of the theoretical DPS gets lost in hipfire from my experience, and the charge shot is a damn problematic gamble when even with perfect accuracy you are likely to miss 60% of the time out at 5 meters vs scouts.
