So this video ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlYt84AW8NY&feature=youtu.be&t=39s ) and musing about planetary conquest got me thinking. Also this trello card on the big board as well: https://trello.com/c/3f9urddm/351-districts-give-something-else-than-isk-like-special-resources .
In terms of special resources I think there are two main ways you could go about it. First, certain districts have special resources that can only be found on that particular one. Second, districts have the capability to fit Surface Infrastructure (SI) to generate special resources.
I think the first option could prove rather dangerous in terms of allowing the monopolization of a resource. The second choice however could make district geography somewhat flat. I then thought of a way to combine these two ideas to get the best of both worlds and potentially even drive more conflict: Planet Fitting
A planet should have a total fitting value like a dropsuit or a vehicle and each SI takes up certain amount of fitting. This would allow not only for geography to be created by giving different planets different fitting, but it could also drive local conflicts as well. For example, imagine that your corporation is getting ready to erect their new fancy SI and make lots of money but it turns out there isn't enough grid on the planet to support it because your neighbor has his fancy surface infrastructure taking up all the juice.
This situation creates lots of options of how the player can interact to resolve it. Do you got to your neighbor and see if they will downgrade so you can fit your SI? Do you raid them to shut off the facility so you can turn yours on? Or do you just conquer the district to take their fancy SI for yourself? As you can see this type of resource interaction opens up all kinds of gameplay both on a local level and in the over arching gameplay.
TLDR: Add geography and district interaction by having each planet have a set amount of fitting and each surface infrastructure have a fitting cost.

Its a good idea. I like the idea of the fitting space and would add a lot of dynamic to PC fights and reason to even have the fights. An honest question though, and not trying to troll by any means. Do you think Dust has enough runway left in terms of game life/counsel obsolescence to implement things like this?
Hello? any one there?

Simple answer? Yes. I don't want to get off topic, but Dust does need to have a way off the PS3 though. Originally I thought Legion was that future, but now I think it's more likely to see Dust end up on the PS4.

To be honest I Was surprised initially when PC didn't simply mimic PI in EVE, with an upgradable command hub which dictated how much PG/CPU the planet had, and then you could fit whatever structures you wanted within that PG/CPU limit. If we're moving towards a resource driven PC model, I think some sort of 'fitting' as Kane suggested would be extremely appropriate for this very reason.

Heavies 360 face melting in the blink of an eye will not go down well and would turn the game very codshtish i think.
The pc version would be crap i reckon and i am pro pc gaming in general. I have a 16400 dpi gold plated usb gaming mouse with 18 buttons as well so while many players will frantically be mashing their keyboard, i'll be whistling 16+ k/d. I have a 27 k/d in csgo pretty much from having the gaming mouse, i don't need to push any buttons other than WASD and it is pure effortless easy mode.
I really do think dust should go to the ps4 and not pc if it's ging to happen.
Sorry for off topic lol.
Anyway i think your idea is great yeah. I would really like timers reduced drastically in pc so it is more dynamic in that people are more free to do whhat they want and stuff. I really wish you was still on the cpm despite your bad image from the great pc fiasco lol.

I'm not a pro PC gamer but I have a gaming mouse because that's pretty typical for PC gaming ^_^

The key to attacks in PC being under shorter time frames will be a robust raiding system. I really think that something like planet fitting could really help create interesting ways to have raids affect districts though.

A suggestion:
Give incentive for corps to try to gain planetary dominance with optional SI that are basically PG / CPU mods.
Aka: District SI provides no bonus but includes PG / CPU to entire planet (Planetary Power Plant / Planetary Neural Network)
These would give the planet the ability to hold significantly more good stuff so it would be worth giving up potentially two slots Districts to buff the others. However for a corp to get full benefit they would need to control large swaths of the planet.
As a counter, these districts are inherently more vulnerable to attack (Potentially) by having raids reduce their output (in this case PG / CPU) which would potentially blackout other districts. (With Blackout order possibly starting with the district Furthest from the PG/CPU district) |

(With Blackout order possibly starting with the district Furthest from the PG/CPU district) in all actuality im pretty sure those places with the power plant would probably be the most secure with good defenses and stuff but taking it out or raiding it effectively could hurt or cripple one of the other districts u have on that planet making that much easier to take or do raids with out much effort for a time |
