So it has come to my attention that EVERYTHING in the database upon entering the battle has to be loaded to the PS3's memory. That includes weapons, dropsuits, vehicles, modules, modifiers, literally everything.
So I ask, wouldn't cleaning all the junk in the database reduce memory usage, and as such either improve performance or free up space for more content? There are plenty of unused things in the database, just a short look up in stuff514.com will allow you to find unused weapons, testing modules, olds turrets that were cut, basically lots and lots of junk. Examples: http://www.stuff514.com/sde/type/352524 http://www.stuff514.com/sde/type/352522 http://www.stuff514.com/sde/type/354773 http://www.stuff514.com/sde/type/357007 http://www.stuff514.com/sde/type/357009 http://www.stuff514.com/sde/type/352898
Another thing is tiercide. If we removed the tiers of every dropsuit in the game, we would be cutting out 32 STD/AVD dropsuits. Each dropsuit comes with a ton of modifiers and values attached to it as well as a skin applied to it, which I'm guessing eats up a decent amount of memory.
Note: I could be completely wrong and this is complete speculation, but if I'm right, would the memory usage reduction be worth going into the database and cleaning it up?

Theres one map i don't play because of the fact of memory leakage or overloaded memory. This issue has been around for a while and i wish it would be fixed. I hate doping down to 15 FPS for second then going back to maybe 30. Sometimes the lag will persist into the next match and at that point i have to restart the entire PS3. the garbage collection in this game needs to be improved.
Also why can't they stream the data as needed from the hard drive on the PS3? i am an armature programming so i can see if they can't access that part of the engine but still I just thing they optimization for this game could be 3 times better. I want a constant 60 FPS with no drops unless in extreme conditions(16 players shooting plasma cannons at once)

I heard this game has a serious memory leak problem that get's worse the longer you play.
As for exception handling (which i've noticed since i don't fatal error anymore) i'm happier.
But... Now where's that garbage collector? i'm tired of running into the "memory exhausted" kind of freezes (like loading a map/warbarage or when i pull out the keyboard).

I will tell you that there is almost twice as much stuff in Catma then is actually put into the SDE as well.
Oh and 3/4ths+ of attributes are filtered out because either CCP doesn't want people to know or it's obscure stuff like camera movements and whatnot. I'm sure tons of it could be optimized.

Not really, only things that are needed are put into memory. We are actively, however, trying to find any low hanging fruit in the performance category.

I remember CCP Praetorian mentioning something at Fanfest about the fittings being a major suspect of performance loss and it being why SSD's are (potentially) faster than traditional stock drives because they can pull that information at a faster rate. Would also be why it's excruciating to try and edit/create a fit in the middle of battle.
But doesn't this also mean that every single fitting that a person has must be loaded into memory to be freely available in the event that they spawn with it and/or change into that fit at a supply depot? Even assets they aren't using like, for instance, an Officer Dropsuit that they're only using as a favorited fit to show off the skin in the Warbarge?
Theory assumes that (and I know the community will hang me for this) it would be a performance boost to limit the maximum amount of fittings a player has when they enter battle. It could potentially be a performance boost to also reduce the amount of assets used (tiers of dropsuits, entire other dropsuits for different skins, Aurum/LP/ISK variants of the same exact suit, etc).
Considering that data loaded onto memory doesn't go away until the system is restarted, this would explain why it's so painful to be in PC as PC players usually have lots of different fits for lots of different things and also why it's so beneficial to restart the system prior to a PC match.
Could stand to reason that we could go with Function over Form in this case.
Have a suggestion for the Planetary Services Department?

Could stand to reason that we could go with Function over Form in this case. We could create fittings folders that would allow us to have a bunch of different fits inside of them, but only one folder can be active inside battles. So you could have different folders for PC, Pubs, FW, etc'.

I wouldn't say no to being forced to choose 3 or 4 dropsuit loadouts + 2 or 3 vehicle loadouts to take into a battle. Would need to have a decent time on the warbarge though, with a note of what map we're playing.
But yeah, I think a lot of other people would ***** and moan, despite most having a different character for each specialisation. |

I would definitely have to be one of those people. I would hate not having the freedom/flexibility of being able to run whatever I want in a match.
I guess I would do it for the good of the game... but gah it would be painful

I wonder how memory gets cleared up during and after a battle. Also, does each dropsuit have it's only model it has to load in? Why wouldn't it just be a texture that replaces the material. Should they be preloaded? |

PS3 has very limited RAM (256MB for system + 256MB for graphics) Putting everything in your PS3 is wrong :) Eg. database of static items from eve is about 175MB pure of data. https://developers.eveonline.com/resource/static-data-export
For playing in your fit, you only need 1 smal table of 'your effect' that can be created at time of generating fit and updated with your current skils and other things like warbage. You can have many of them (even for vehicles) stored at Dust servers and only loaded when you run at field (just one small table) and changed when you change fit or vehicle. No need keep this all in RAM. Part of it is needed at your clinet for showing animation and visual generating. Rest is needed only at server to calculate your actions.
At best you no need any data if game is in 'stream' mode. Your hardware works only like 'dvd player' that shows streamed data from server. This is ultimate technique for low end hardware showning 'good' graphics (generated at server). You need only good connection to servers.
Not much time left...
