So I have family who have been staying with me from out of town for the holidays.
One of my family is a male in his 20's and a HARDCORE gamer. Every game I ask him about he has played. He has also been an Eve player for about 3 years and while he knew about DUST 514 he had never played it.
We fired up the old PS3 and after watching me play a few matches he decided he wanted to create a character.
I watched him do pretty well in the academy while offering advice when he asked a question, but I knew what was waiting for him.
He played about 20 matches over the last 2 days.
He just finished his last one, calmly set down the controller, looked at me and said "Well, I'm done. You were right about the NPE. They should have spent more time on the game. Seems like they should have seen that coming."
Anyway I'm vaguely aware that they are working on NPE and maybe a new game mode (?) but thought I'd share.
I was hoping that a hardcore gamer with an extensive FPS background who is into Eve would like DUST and I would be validated instead of me feeling like a lone weirdo masochist.
I mean, if not him, then who?
*sigh*

All that you need in this game is an adv suit and prof in the rifle/weapon of choice to hold you down until you can level some of your cores up. Will you go 30-3 when you first load in the game, maybe not...but you get better with experience.
If you go up against full squads, then you will get smoked. And that wouldn't matter if you had 1M or 20M skill points. But not every game puts you up against teams. And if you choose to run solo, then that's the choice that you make.

I hope he continues to try, but I also hope he saves himself the Grey hairs.
While dust is an amazing idea, it's just too poorly done. Also, the playerbase is a bunch of bitter c*nts lol!
They could know he's knew, and stomp him anyway just for the hell of it smh?!
That's not to say I haven't or wouldn't shoot him, but I do think it's very important that CCP work on the new player experience aspect extensively.
Dust player's have this "we're the best shooter's ever" complex. Anyone who thinks dust is a bit incomplete obviously aren't gamers, in our opinion. We could get the best shooters from every genre, and they'd struggle like hell in the eve universe.
Why are we so cynical?

Oops, looks like you upset the "Blind as a bat fanboi crowd". No, the game sucks and that is coming from non-console, non-expert gamer. However, I do have half a sense of what makes something playable and this game is a silly little farce worth no more than a good beer and two f*cks.
This game failed! What part of that do people not understand? It is going away and already would have if not for the skeleton player base that can still be milked for money.
I continue to play for what little of the world of New Eden is represented, but I don't kid myself about how much of a failure this is for CCP.
They are trying to kill this game gracefully because they got too far into it. DUST told them where WoD was going to go and they took care of that but fast.
The only thing GÇô and mark my words GÇô that Valkyrie will most likely have after two years more years of development and maybe a year of release will be the whole Occulus gimmick.
I hope I'm wrong.

Completely different. As different as EVE is from other MMOs, it is still an MMO. Huge difference in player interactions. In Dust, there are either freings or enemies. In EVE, due to it being an MMO, the vast majority of people are neutrals. You aren't thrown to the wolves as much as you are in Dust. New players are released into the world in the middle of High Security space. While there is always the possibility of being attacked in High Security, the risk is pretty damn low. MUCH MUCH lower than in Dust...
The NPE for EVE, which is regarded as having the steepest learning curve amongst MMOs, is better than the NPE for Dust, which is a Shooter. That's ******.

The NPE isn't that bad. Most of the important information in the game is learned through experience and the experience of others (how to fit practically, where the good spots are, flow of battle, suit's strengths/weaknesses, etc). The basic mechanics are simple: point/shoot/hack, here are the mods and suits, here are even some examples, also skill trees. This is why joining a corp and squading/speaking up should be more emphasized and encouraged (through an in-game corp search option).
Dust is a game you actually have to try at and work with and I understand that it's not for everyone, but we shouldn't try to water it down because a few (or most) people don't like it. I know it's not great buisness, but I'd rather have a small niche player base that cares about the game than something like Destiny's fustercluck of a community.

MUCH MUCH lower than in Dust... The NPE for EVE, which is regarded as having the steepest learning curve amongst MMOs, is better than the NPE for Dust, which is a Shooter. That's ******. I'm confident in saying that Dust has the steepest learning curve among shooters. Period. Dust is insanely complex when you compare it with other shooters, and the tutorial experience is practically nonexistant. Not all the stats are available in game, so you have to dig through the internet to get them, and the matchmaking heavily favors squads. There are things that vets (myself included) are still in the dark about. Does anyone really know how the "Accuracy" stat is calculated, for example? How can we expect a noob to know much at all, if anything at all about weapon and suit stats. The NPE consists of a 3-4 battle grace period. Then like a light switch they are exposed to all the vets and the huge power disparity between them and the vets. Never mind that vets typically play squadded. The end result I'd that newbros are little more than cannon fodder. Nobody enjoys that. So people leave. Which is why the player base is so small for a F2P game. In a F2P game, players are the content, and we are lacking players. The NPE for Dust is a purely toxic thing about the game, and it is of my opinion that it should be at the very top of CCPs Roadmap. Above everything else. Everything. The learning curve is steep because the game is unfinished. Plus there is something cool about the learning curve. We all started like that. The tough part is that vets get stronger with SP while newbs have to start fresh. It has to be super hard now that everyone has proto gear and such. |

I wasn't talking about validity...I was talking about frequency.
Let's be honest, the NPE isn't going to have some drastic change.
There are many here who has paid their dues. I know I did. To me, I think that's what makes Dust interesting. It's this cold dark world where you better find all the info you need to survive. Sorta like how the old games did it without the plethora of games hand holding you.
That's what influenced me to engage the game. I went to wikis. I looked up youtube videos. I asked questions here on forums. Basically I did my research and found the answers I needed. Plus I joined a friendly corp that helped me out.

If this was a basic lobby shooter, none of us would play it.
Even with all of the different class systems. It's planetary conquest and the goal to be able to play at a high level and the eve-connection that makes this game unique enough to hold a stable playerbase.
Unfortunately, a lot of new players aren't willing to sacrifice hundreds of hours to play at a high-competitive level and quite frankly, I don't blame them.

This is/was a niche shooter. Nothing wrong with that if the average 3000 or so players still online enjoy it. New players will download Dust, try it for one or two nights. Then go back to games where the experience isn't what it is now.
In my clan there were six other men, all FPS gamers. I was the only one who botheres to keep an account in the game. Nothing more satisfying than running in Militia gear, flanking protostompers and managing to bring one of the down. Had Dust 514 been one of the games launched on PS3's first year things would have been a lot different. |

It isn't the NPE, at least not just the NPE. Let's assume that your story is 100% correct and you have not embellished his 'gaming prowess.' For that person, the NPE is not a problem especially if they have a loved one/friend coaching them through the game. The NPE is much more for people that got onto DUST from the free games market, played it for an hour, got stuck with absolutely no idea how to play, and moved on. For the person that has played EVE, has information on the game, and is willing to learn how to play, NPE is a the least of the issues. Issues in DUST:
1. New Player Experience is nearly nonexistent. A few games in the Academy and people are thrown against my multiple million SP invested Tanks, Assault, and Scout suits? Bad time. 2. The game is hardly different enough to end up being played. The only way DUST is different is the ability to fit your suit with given modules. Different in regards to a lot of other FPS but someone joining looking to shoot other people it hardly matters. For that person, they can play for a few hours and will immediately want to go back to their previous FPS. 3. Look at the top 3 scores in a random game and look at the bottom 6 scores. That simply should not happen in a game that is finely made. If I were new to the game and saw that I would be thrown into a game where 4 people were going to get ~60% of the kills/WP and I was going to be on the bottom end I sure as well would not keep playing. 4. Subpar graphics and sound. The game doesn't look or sound that great. I know that those two aspects are not 100% important but that isn't going to persuade people to move from other games. 5. Lag, framer rate issues, and server stability.
You can blanket the terms into a lot of the above into New Player Experience. I think the reason why DUST is not super successful is because it isn't that the game is aweful, it just isn't good enough and/or different enough to attract a reasonable audience to stay around.
