Background rant Forget the stats, description, and slot layout for a minute. Put aside the nerfs and buffs that have occurred since its release. Let's look at the Assault dropship for what it is, a pilot/ 2-gunner / 2-passenger dropship with a front mounted small turret.
No amount of data collected can provide enough information on where the ADS is at in terms of role. No one can say that the ADS is or has ever performed well in its role. I believe that is because we have yet to give it a role set in stone. Everyone has spoken as to what role it should fill best, is most ideal, role it should not fill... what we "think" the ADS was designed for. If we remember, the ADS was released solely because us derpship pilots could not do anything other than get kill assists... we simply had no purpose in our vipers, myrons, and/or Eryx (and their Gal counter parts). It was simply to give us pilots something fun to do. And fun has it been.
The best way to test out what a ADS can do is to push it to it's limits... until it reaches it's fullest potential based on current game design. The ADS is one of those few things (not only) in this game that requires more than just a OP fitting and Skill Point sink... It requires a good Player. Give everyone all the skills (at level 5), isk, and modules and you will notice that even still, not everyone will be able to master the vehicle. Long ago we had a debate as to what constituted a TRUE vehicle (be it tank or derpship) Pilot from a simple blueberry. We may disagree on what a True pilot is... but we all agree that it takes one to fly a derpship or drive a tank.
Proposal
I want to set in stone what the "general" none-racial role of the ADS should be. No matter what is decided, the most important factor will be the number of turrets mounted. So I ask the devs this, care to join an ADS Pilot in a couple of matches? Let's see what lone single front mounted turret ADS can do. Get a taste of the battle while taking turns in one of the turrets on the dual mounted ADS. Or become the most fragile unstoppable force raining fire from the sky in the triple mounted ADS.
One thing you will notice is that different pilots excel in different roles when flying their ADS. Fly with me and we will hunt infantry while attacking and defending objectives throughout the map. Join Lions-Fan and you will see that no tank can hide or run from his lethal ship. Jump on with Derrith and you will see nothing but red derpships of different variants falling from the sky. Remove nametags in game and many will still be able to tell who is flying in the sky based on their flight style. There are many more pilots out their... each with their own mastered role for the ADS.
But which role was it meant to fill? I ask again, will you fly with one of us if not all?

Get ready for some inception style crap, because it's about to go down.
"Assault". Assault is the main suit in dust intended for slaying.
The first three letters of assault spell "Ass".
"Ass". Ass is a term for the hindquarters of a human being, many of which are pursued by men.
"Dropship". Dropship has the role of minor transport.
"Drop". Drop has four letters. Drop also means in certain situations to slay. Drop can also mean to drop the beats.
"Ship". Ship also has four letters. Ship means to transport. Ship is also known as an airborne craft.
Therefore we can assume that the assault dropship is intended for slaying, grabbing ass, minor transport, while dropping some sexy beats, and shipping stuff through the air.
But we are sadly not able to blast these sexy tunes so that our victims can hear the dance floor beats before their death.

The ADS (and a squad-flown DS) are one of those things...
An epic question of balance is upon us: do we make things that good players can use well? Or do we make things all players can use equally?
If this wasn't -EvE- I wouldn't care, but since it is... I unequivocally request that game design respect the "right fit for the right player"
We don't play dust because it's easy and we can win, we play it because it's **** hard and we can become gods.

As far as i know the only Dev tweaking the numbers take ADS rides very personally, they take great offense.
inb4 misquoting devs is a bannable offense
Funny going through the old ADS posts showed a lot of accusations heaped upon pilots, a lot of pilot prophecies that came true, and the ADS finally walked away from like a fart in a crowded room.

Ground attack craft with lighter transport than an NDS but greater firepower. Except we're not allowed greater firepower (well, we have greater firepower, it's just essentially irrelevant.)
Derrith, would you say that solo ADSs are the only ones used in PC? Transport might be used a bit but I'm talking about gunning.
But one of the biggest stumbling blocks for any DS/ADS is that the maps and teams are so small that meaningful transportation is pretty unnecessary and that the firepower available to an ADS is pretty easily performed by infantry who can do more on the ground than in the turret.

Yes. The simple fact of the matter is that it's simply more useful to have your gunner on the ground fighting than having him gun for you.
Another main reason for this is the fact that gunners require a pilot to hover, making him easy prey to any AV on the field.
Transport ADS are definitely used, but it's nothing more than "spawn here and take your guys to the city" at the start of the match.

16 man teams are too small to spare another guy to be gunner... but thats just me.
I believe a gunner can learn to shoot on the move but we never taken the time to train one.

when i Fly ADS, my main goal is to keep the other team on the ground. I take out rooflinks (and ground links, if i happen to spot them) and destroy other dropships. I tend to leave ADS alone, as i dont have any points in Incubus, so id rather not provoke them into pulling one out. I'll also fly in and assist with pushing a point, or distract a tank. Since the ROF nerf, ive found it hard to destroy tanks without running proto missiles, and even then, it depends on how good of a tanker they are.

PRO Rails on an Incubus are pretty good for vehicle hunting still. Not nearly the sheer banditry of 10% ROF/level days, but still solid. HAVs don't care too much unless you can hound them for a good minute or two, or they're really bad, and LAVs had never cared if the driver considers jinking once in a blue moon. DSs, though, have to be concerned.

I believe a gunner can learn to shoot on the move but we never taken the time to train one. Numnutz and I are pretty good, even on the move, but I doubt we'd be more effective than a solo pilot plus a ground pounder in a PC: coordinated AV in pubs is bad news enough already, and while we have a better reaction to Swarmers than I have solo (ie, I'm more likely to zero in and kill AV as a gunner) it's still likely that one Swarmer forces us to run.
Not done a PC in ages, and the last was a lagfest, but I got repeatedly chased down by the same AVer (solo, I might add - Ratamaq, if you're still watching, here's a shout out for you!) But yeah, I definitely feel that the 16-merc team size is too small for anything approaching flexible tactics.
The difference between 15 or 16 boots on the ground is felt more heavily than the difference between 31 and 32, or even 23/24. Just a bump up to 24 vs 24 would give teams much more flexibility... anyway, thanks for the answers guys, just wanted to have that out in the open where Rattati and Co would (maybe) see it.
