Honestly, I'd love to get a capture card with a frame per second tracker so I can give hard data on these sort of thread because I hate saying very speculative statements such as "Frame rate is s***" and such.
That said, I'm going to eat my shoe when I say it seems better after the 1.9 update and using a fresh installed client of 2716MB.

Horrible.
Frame rate drops below 30 in almost every match. Gal Lag facility is nearly unplayable in some matches.
Fps of below 30 is absolutely unacceptable in every game. If you think otherwise then you don't have a clue what you are talking about.
The standard for PC games has been 60 fps for years and now we are rapidly moving to 144 fps as the standard while even the new consoles still can't manage even a stable 1080p30fps. It is kinda embarrassing, really.

Oddly enough I was playing last night and found it as smooth as glass. I very rarely suffer from low frame rate or lag. I also this week opened up the PS3, cleaned it and replaced the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU.
Unsurprisingly, given the mass produced nature of these things, the paste on the cell CPU had cracks, gaps and dried out to dust in places. The GPU was even worse with two thirds of the chip not even having paste on it. So with the TIM replaced the console is now whisper quiet as the fan isn't having to compensate for the poor contact with the heat sinks. Graphic performance in particular seems much more assured.
I would also state for full disclose that I've got an SSD in the PS3 so texture loading is much, much quicker. My internet is 150mb down and 15mb up and my entire AV system lives in a custom built unit with a fan blowing cold air in via an air brick.
I take my AV seriously.

most games have horrible frame rate, destiny is only 30fps, i've been playing blacklight which i guess is around 45.
the only way to truely play games is on PC, not because consoles can't do 60fps, but because they always choose not to, because of console parity. last gen is seriously destroying next gen, I didn't spent -ú350 to play games at 30fps because people on ps3 need the same experience!!!
the FPS on dust certainly improved but turning the camera whilst driving an LAV makes me feel sick.
if you have a 2014 top of the line sony bravia 50 inch tv like me then PC is the ONLY way to go, this console generation will be VERY short, and people will NOT be clambering to buy the newest consoles, because they will outdated at launch just like the ps4 and xbone

This is why I run solo, have voice chat turned off in the options menus, have graphics settings set to "low" (thought god knows what that actually does in this game) and most of the time I am getting stable ish framerates.
I would imagine on a good day 25-30fps, on a bad day in a squad with voice chat on with eq. spam the frame rate easily drops below 20 fps.

IT would be good if someone who has a capture card did some framerate analysis of Dust. Just so we can have solid numbers to show CCP. The game could also be tested under different scenarios. compare pub matches, FW, PC. The Gallente research facility socket. We could do a deliberate experiment to spam equipment and see how FPS is affected.
Some objective numbers would be good.

Yesterday was bad enough that I actively turned off the PS3 and walked away fuming. Really laggy. Scout with Nova Knife was able to basically teleport from 30 meters away to instantly behind me several times. A single heavy with an HMG would stutter back and forth and suddenly an entire army was behind him. Was not an enjoyable experience.
It comes and goes. Some days it is fairly decent and it is fun to run around and shoot people. When you are stuttering stepping, rubberbanding, and having the oh-so wonderful turret glitch where your tank does not fire even though it sounds like it... the healthy frustration that keeps you playing and trying harder turns into the most foul of hatred and anger that would cause Pazazu to shrivel up and die.

*rolls eyes*
People have brand new PS3's with a fresh SSD in it... And still approaching the new Sockets causes Massive texture pop ins.. Massive Texture muddyness at certain distances...
LAV's driving full speed into these sockets freeze in mid air while the socket loads in.
Even returning to your merc quarters after a match... Your avatar goes through 3 phases as the textures load in.
Texture pops and load ins are the NUMBER 1 Flaw of Unreal Engine... It's known industry wide and WHY most developers don't build FPS games on it anymore even though it's so cheap.
It doesn't matter if you have Google fibre and are getting 900 MB/S down... The Playstation 3 caps out at 10mb/s...
The playstation runs smooth and quiet with a SSD... There rarely should be noise coming from the PS3 if it has a SSD.. Regardless of how hot the unit is.
Taken all that into account. the frame rate is still horrible. The Visual cues are one thing and can be annoying.. But most of that is attributed to terrible rudimentary net code.
The problem with the frame rate drops is the inconsistency in inputs. When the frame rate drops.. Your inputs per second that are registered drops aswell... Leaving you pressing buttons and moving and getting little to no response out of the game... This is often when you find yourself stuck on boxes or having a difficult time running around a corner..
It is terrible in certain matches when you get 10 mercenaries+ engaging in a small area.. The frame rates dip well below 20... 15 i would say... Mix the inconsistent frame rate.. With Terrible Net code, With Terrible Hit detection and the game becomes this frustrating ball of rage... because the mechanics of the game don't run consistent in anyway causing deaths to every mercenary who has ever played this game.
The concept of paying for your items lossed everytime is amazing.. CCP's ability to implement solid mechanics to support this concept is just abysmal. They will tweak a gun statistic 200 times though. |

~smooth as glass~
Tell me, how deep ... ugh, never mind
This game does not ever run with a stable frame rate and this is not acceptable.
30 frames per second, stable, that is what I want and I don't want to hear any excuses. Everything below that is embarrassing and close to unplayable.
Play another shooter on PC with 60fps for a while and then come back to Dust and tell me again that you don't suffer from low frame rate.
I don't care what has to be done to get to a stable frame rate of 30fps. Just do it. The game has been in this pathetic state for far too long now.
The core stuff just has never really been fixed. Frame rate, lag issues, getting stuck on terrain, clunky controls, hit detection, hit boxes, basically everything that is important and the basis of every competitive shooter keeps getting ignored. And this is nothing new. It's been like that since beta. But after two years now I'm just tired of begging and getting completely ignored.

I've been playing with this recently with my HD cable switching between 720p and 480i. The 480i does feel much more smooth and I believe just my personal tests over the past week prove it.
For me, when playing on 720p and try harding especially with all the scout/hmg spam, I will go through a match with .9 K/D with something like 9 kills and 10 deaths.
When I switch to 480i, however, I consistently get 2.5-4.0 even KD/R with scores of about 15/6 at the low end and 35/5 at the absolute high end. This is all using ADV gear and playing for the objectives typically against proto pub squads.
In my opinion, you shouldn't play in 720p the frame rate tanks too much especially in CQC fire fights where its the worst offender. I for one will take the lame aspect of downgrading my settings to 480i to play this game with less frustration. Nothing worse then having proto bears kill you with 80 armor left when they had such an advantage to begin with which happens all the time in 720p for me.
It's an absolute must with sniping or forge sniping for sure as the fire delay ruins your shots intermittently. Not too mention the Assault forge misfire seems to occur more in 720p though that may just be coincidence.
As to the OP question specifically, pretty ****** frame rate as 720p really shouldn't drop the frame rate so much except when everyone first starts spawning in. |

To improve framerate:
1. Replace thermal paste and clean PS3 inside (see above). 2. Drill ventilation holes in your PS3 chassis above the cooling fan, and also all over the bottom plate. 3. Buy a USB laptop cooler and place it below your PS3, so that it will blow cold air through the ventilation holes in the bottom of the PS3 and cool the mainboard plates directly.
Now your PS3 will not be getting hot, and you will not get drops in framerate as often.
I am currently modding my PS3 like the above, will post an article on how to do these modifications later.

Lets be serious for a moment.
Can you alter your ps3 to cool more efficiently and reduce drops in framerate? Yes
Can you adjust the video output to help smooth framerate? Yes
Is the framerate for this game 'good' or even decent? No
I am suprised by how many people think that its ok just because it has been worse or that they have gotten used to it.
I get used to it too and have matches where I go 25/2 with 3500wp but if I go play any other fps shooter on the ps3, ps4, or pc and come back to dust it is noticeably choppy even with 150mb down 15mb up
You can learn to play with it but let's be serious. It is not good.

You can choose to believe me or not but I don't have any issues with frame rates on my PS3. The PC matches I've played, I've not seen any of the issues that many have described. The worst thing that's ever happened is that maybe the sound has been out of sync a little because of the Hive spams playing hell with the 5.1. I've not experienced rubber banding, LAVs pausing in the air or 30 metre teleport jumps.
The texture and Map loading improved with the SSD as I expected that's why I brought it. Didn't expect a frame rate increase from it because it wouldn't effect that. The thermal paste switch was something I'd heard could improve the PS3 performance so I had a afternoon off, some spare TIM cleaner and paste and thought I'd have a crack at it. PS 3 runs much quieter now, not only on Dust but The Last Of Use and Wipeout HD, the only other games I have for it. Almost certainly due to the GPU now having full contact with the heat sink.
I've heard that there are many different variants of PS3 as Sony often swap and change component suppliers to minimise costs. That might be a contributory factor as well. When I get the chance I might borrow a couple of friends PS3 and spend a day comparing their Dust performance in my set up compared to theirs and compare my PS3 on their set up. Has anyone done anything similar to that themselves in the last?

Sony will not put on Arctic Silver 5 in their production lines, they are more likely using something silicone based, which you buy buckets of (not small tubes): http://www.dowcorning.com/content/news/etronics_news_TC5026_auto.aspx

Do you have a mechanical hard drive? Try with a SSD, even a cheap hybrid drive will do fine. Unreal Engine 3 has unfortunate slow loading of textures due to them being streamed directly from the hard drive.

Watched Starlight Burner's video again, this time with sound on.
You are ranting about CCP making a bad game, while you can hear your loud PS3 fan in the background, and seeing thermal throttling (extreme framerate drops). This is not normal behaviour of the game or your PS3. I do not know if you are just trolling or?
This specific thing is not CCPs fault, its your hardware failing on you. Fix your ****, i.e. clean your PS3, or it is going to show YLOD sooner or later.
At the same time, I am not pleased with CCPs mouse input, the frame rate in general and aim assist being a part of this game. But you can't blame them for your broken hardware.

Just in case you dont read comments on youtube.
1. Defrag your PS3.
2. Get about a gig free at least.
3. Reinstall Dust 514.
4. Clean your PS3; its sounds like its about to die with the fans overworking any hotter and it might blow up to bits. Surprised the fans hasn't melted yet from over use.

Actually a good rule of thumb for PS3 is if you can hear the fan noise over the sound of the HD access, then your PS3 is running too hot.

Guess what you guys had me doing yesterday? Been little over 2 yrs since I bought ps3 and never took it apart. Nothing more than blast air through. Noticed my fan is running more lately and figured I'd take more advice found around here. Heatsinks looked like they were covered with felt. Paste wasn't dry but looked like sony could have been a little more generous with it.
Either way, cleaned everything. Repaste. Added some extra ventilation. All I can say is thanks for the tip guys! I either forgot to plug the fan back in or it really enjoys being clean. Fan never kicked into high and ran cool all eve. |

No problem.
When I used to run a gaming shop, the number of people complaining that x console had stopped working that when you queried had the damn thing near a radiator, fire, on top of a cable box or even had magazines kept on top of it....
