Kevall Longstride wrote:Oddly enough I was playing last night and found it as smooth as glass. I very rarely suffer from low frame rate or lag. I also this week opened up the PS3, cleaned it and replaced the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU.
Unsurprisingly, given the mass produced nature of these things, the paste on the cell CPU had cracks, gaps and dried out to dust in places. The GPU was even worse with two thirds of the chip not even having paste on it. So with the TIM replaced the console is now whisper quiet as the fan isn't having to compensate for the poor contact with the heat sinks. Graphic performance in particular seems much more assured.
I would also state for full disclose that I've got an SSD in the PS3 so texture loading is much, much quicker. My internet is 150mb down and 15mb up and my entire AV system lives in a custom built unit with a fan blowing cold air in via an air brick.
I take my AV seriously.
To improve framerate:
1. Replace thermal paste and clean PS3 inside (see above). 2. Drill ventilation holes in your PS3 chassis above the cooling fan, and also all over the bottom plate. 3. Buy a USB laptop cooler and place it below your PS3, so that it will blow cold air through the ventilation holes in the bottom of the PS3 and cool the mainboard plates directly.
Now your PS3 will not be getting hot, and you will not get drops in framerate as often.
I am currently modding my PS3 like the above, will post an article on how to do these modifications later.

Your PS3 is not being cooled efficiently, replace your thermal paste.

Your PS3 is also overheating. Replace thermal paste ASAP or it is going to break down in a few months. Typical thermal throttling behaviour of CPU and/or GPU.

Typical thermal throttling behaviour of CPU and/or GPU. Sounds like a lot of bullshit to me. As I've stated in my other threads, this has been a issue ever since Beta. This is my newest PS3, that I got back in June. No other game causes this extreme Frame rate drop. I will not give CCP ANY excuses as this isn't a new issue. People should stop damage controlling for CCP.
Your PS3 still has sonys stock thermal paste. Its utter sh*t.

^ This also, unless you play in 576p resolution. But you lose out a lot on accuracy in that case.

Kevall Longstride wrote: I've heard that there are many different variants of PS3 as Sony often swap and change component suppliers to minimise costs. That might be a contributory factor as well. When I get the chance I might borrow a couple of friends PS3 and spend a day comparing their Dust performance in my set up compared to theirs and compare my PS3 on their set up. Has anyone done anything similar to that themselves in the last?
Sony will not put on Arctic Silver 5 in their production lines, they are more likely using something silicone based, which you buy buckets of (not small tubes): http://www.dowcorning.com/content/news/etronics_news_TC5026_auto.aspx

Raptor Princess wrote:When I got my ps3, I had it cleaned, re-pasted and ventilation holes added (and an extra fan). I get bad frame rate, and always have. The new maps and sockets are really bad - I have to stand still for 10 seconds sometimes before the wall no longer looks like it was built in mine craft. I didn't realise there was a door in one wall the first 3 times I played on one map!
About a week ago, I was swarming a tank with a squad mate, and we both saw it dissappear and then pop up at the other side of the map a second later.
Do you have a mechanical hard drive? Try with a SSD, even a cheap hybrid drive will do fine. Unreal Engine 3 has unfortunate slow loading of textures due to them being streamed directly from the hard drive.

Watched Starlight Burner's video again, this time with sound on.
You are ranting about CCP making a bad game, while you can hear your loud PS3 fan in the background, and seeing thermal throttling (extreme framerate drops). This is not normal behaviour of the game or your PS3. I do not know if you are just trolling or?
This specific thing is not CCPs fault, its your hardware failing on you. Fix your ****, i.e. clean your PS3, or it is going to show YLOD sooner or later.
At the same time, I am not pleased with CCPs mouse input, the frame rate in general and aim assist being a part of this game. But you can't blame them for your broken hardware.

SILENT GIANT wrote:Guess what you guys had me doing yesterday? Been little over 2 yrs since I bought ps3 and never took it apart. Nothing more than blast air through. Noticed my fan is running more lately and figured I'd take more advice found around here. Heatsinks looked like they were covered with felt. Paste wasn't dry but looked like sony could have been a little more generous with it.
Either way, cleaned everything. Repaste. Added some extra ventilation. All I can say is thanks for the tip guys! I either forgot to plug the fan back in or it really enjoys being clean. Fan never kicked into high and ran cool all eve.
Good job dude, you just saved your PS3s life :)
I hope you can enjoy a better gameplay experience from now on.
