New article on PCGamer ?
BTW This article sure sounds a lot like how Destiny is setup ? If that's the case CCP you've already failed..... You guys are CCP get away from the lobby shooters please... I don't care how you swing it if you "Scan , search, find friends" if you're falling back into a lobby just to Q up for a PvE or PvP match, its a lobby shooter this is not what Legion should be... |

This article was just stating what we've known since fanfest.
The biased nature of PCGamer means that they were quick to blame console limitations as the sole factor for Dust's undoing, rather than addressing error on the developer's part.
Good article overall, but all the hardware advantages in the world won't excuse crappy execution.
The struggle is real.

Your first mistake is thinking that Legion is being setup to be like Destiny.
The comparison to Destiny was made by PCGamer, not CCP. If you read the article again, Destiny wasn't even referenced by CCP. They just want Legion to stand on its own and be awesome on its own before it's ready to be merged with Eve Online's economy. CCP never said they're trying to compete against other shooters here.

I don't see anything wrong with combining open world and instanced gameplay.
Certainly instancing is a dated design however it suits the purposes of us being mercenaries just fine. In all liklihood we are more inclined to deploy to flashpoints all over New Eden as they appear and then rapidly disappear than we are to a massive battles which are out of character.
I see some very thematic and interesting options for instanced battles and PVE scenarios as compared to having everything completely open world...... there are something open world gameplay just cannot achieve.

I would love for everything in Legion to be just open world, no instances whatsover. Unfortunatly due to hadware restrictions, I don't think it will be possible

Moreover it's the exact opposite of everything we've learned through dust514's development. Balance necessitated roles that benefited certain fits over others. Necessarily having everything be open led to FOTM.

But we're not purely mercenaries, as being one is more of a job that you can do; it's a choice. It's more of a name if anything tbh. So no, that's not correct.
Anyways, it depends how it works. gamemodes mixed with open world won't work unless places are sectioned off for said activities. If you can go onto a district, drive up to a balanced 64 v 64 battle with 5 HAV's and 3 MAV's full of troops, the fight is kinda ruins the purpose of the battle in the first place. Otherwise you'd end up with a odd happening of someone in the same area of a planet and district in a instance and in open world and they don't see each other, and that is not what TQ was made for, quite the contrary.
The result of the above however is that the playerbase gets split up even more than it is now, as well as ideas that can be used for open world would be used for instanced gameplay, and that's silly imo. If you want a structured and quick battle, okay, arenas would work, even VR arenas. That would be sweet, and it makes sense. Otherwise, in my opinion, it would do more harm than good. |

I still think that killing off the link to Eve in order to have Legion "stand on it's own" is silly mantra that has been circulating at CCP for far too long. I'm sorry but I don't see Legion competing in the quality of PvE with the likes of Borderlands, Destiny, etc. Plus you are going to end up with Day Z like MMOS such as H1Z1 that will expand on this concept while being open world and frankly leaving Legion playing catch up.
Also, at the end of the day it isn't economic links that is needed to make the link between Eve and Legion something noteworthy but tangible gameplay links that swing both ways. That's really what could make Legion stand out in a crowded market, but instead we're going to end up with CCP playing "wait and see" with the link and flying by the seat of their pants. Weaving together Legion and Eve isn't something that can just be tacked on.

Dust has a practical link to Eve Online such as Factional Warfare battles on the ground affecting the FW territory in space. Districts owned by corps have some impact on the local control towers if I recall correctly. Also, there is the ability for Eve and Dust players to join the same corp. But it wasn't enough and no one in Eve cared about that link because it didn't make any significant impact on the Eve side of things to warrant any further investment.
Then there is the fact that Dust doesn't have all of the core features such as PvE, full racial parity for vehicles, no secondary market (not even a simple peer-to-peer trade window), terrible lag, absolutely no matchmaking system in place (at least not a noticeable one), and so on which cause a lot of people in CCP to be distracted from the Eve-Dust link they were suppose to reinforce and instead focused on trying to implement features that should have been implemented on day one.
So you can have an awesome Eve-Legion link on day one for all I care. But if Legion's core features are not fully implemented on day one or at least by official release, then no amount of meaningful links between the two games would save Legion. That's why I feel it's better to have Legion prove to be awesome on its own first. Forget about the competition from other PC games. At least on the PC, Legion will have the support of many Eve Online players, many of which have dedicated themselves to becoming the true inhabitants of New Eden.

You make some good points. The economy is not my personal primary interest in regards to linking the two games. I have little interest in being a space accountant. Loot is great and all but fighting on Titans, POS's, and planet territory is what I'm really looking for. Those are things that will set it high above all the other FPS games. CCP needs to put serious effort into bringing those into the game from the beginning even if we don't see them at the start.
"Standing on it's own," Legion will have little to offer over the rest of the pack without them.

CCP does like it's silly mantras.
And they also like abandoning things.
You are correct in everything you say here.
This wait and see stuff is bullshit. CCP has ten years of experience with EVE and 3 with Dust. They should be able to propose a fun link between between the two games by now. How much longer are the idiotic "let's give CCP time" apologists willing to wait? |

No. If you do your job right Legion won't get cancelled after two years.
EVE players need to have a presence in Legion and vice versa if CCP wants players to realise that a) the other game exists and people are playing it and b) there needs to be a reason to play both.

The big highlight here, is something CCP Rouge himself said at Fanfest. That you can't change out the engine while the aircraft is in flight. I think very much the same for integration of EVE and Legion. It's not something you can add with a patch. It has to be built into the core of the game.

If CCP is leaving the thinking about how things like the EVE-Legion contract system integrates with and drives gameplay for later then they're pretty much sunk, imo.
If they want to make a Destiny-like EVE property that's fine, but Rouge better remember that the price of admission there is world-class fps shooter mechanics. Can your team produce that kind of quality in the core, Rouge?

That very much is true. In Eve Online, alliances often duke it out at all costs in attempt to gain control over a key staging system that can turn the tide of a major war later down the line. Some alliance sometimes intentionally lose many ships with the aim of making the enemy bleed as much they did as possible which often results in bitter-sweet victories for the enemy they are attacking (attrition wars). Remember Napoleon when he tried to take Moscow? He got to Moscow and won, but by the time he got there he lost half his troops on the way there while losing the remaining half on the way back. The Russians made certain that his forces bled deeply for his victory and bled deeply he did.
