This is not a troll post nor is this a negative post.
It is my understanding DUST has always had a small active player base, even though it is free to play on a platform that millions own.
The vast majority have downloaded it, played it, and quickly moved on to other games.
Even within our own forum community, which is a microcosm and fraction of the actual miniscule player community, players are much more likely to post a negative comment than a positive one.
Personally, I had never played a FPS online before DUST. At first I was terrible, now I merely suck at it. Yet, here I am still playing. I was never here when there was a promise of something better to come, I just play because, well, I don't know why. And that is my point...
Why do you play DUST? Why didn't you quit after you got your arse handed to you when you were new like most all who came before you? Why not after the bugs that never got fixed? Why not after Fanfest 2014?
Do not post that there is nothing better out right now to play. The majority of gamers worldwide obviously disagree because they play those games and yet here you are still playing DUST. So you, we, are different.
Is it a certain personality type that sticks with this game? We are a strange lot, to be sure, since we are so few in number.
So I ask you, why do you play DUST? I feel your personal answer can tell you a bit about yourself.

I play cause I am going to own when Legion comes out. I don't care about this game one bit anymore, but I'm just gonna get my SP capped each week until Legion transfers characters. I can't wait to get my position in Legion once all the console players aren't able to come along. |

I still play because of all the time and yes, money, that I've invested in this game.
I'll admit, I quit in disgust when I first started... and didn't come back till several months or so later with 8 mil SP from passive built up. From loser to logibro, and I didn't fire a shot.

I like the people I play with. That, and this is really the only FPS I've ever really played. Most FPS I just can't get into. I just like it because it's different.

Because I can still do things like LAV chases, HAV duels, Dropship ramming, Jihad Jeeping, Nova Knifing, racking up WP's with uplinks, yada yada.
Whatever makes this game unique and unpredictable.

My first month I didn't even knew I had skill points or the ability to buy anything. 1 months later, and 2.000 deaths from lasers later, I rage quit. Didn't play 2-3 months, came back, joined a corp. Helped that corp grow, watched that corp fall, joined the legion, been slaying ever since.

I know CCP a bit from EVE and i really like the EVE universe. But i'm originally an action rpg kinda gamer and lets face it good action rpg's have been very limited the last few years.
So when ccp announced dust i wanted to get on board for the rpg ellement, but also the action, etc. Plus another reason and the reason why i still play now is, if ccp continue's to work on the game and it continue's to grow, to become like EVE in it's own way, then you want to get stuck in there early on, because 10 years from now, i wan't to be one of those guys that has most skillbooks maxed out, along with my own little empire. |

Mostly the Eve lore background. This gives the game a very appealing atmosphere.
Also, I like that the game works even if I put very few effort into it. The combination of being a lobby-shooter with persistence appeals to me as a casual player but still gives me a reason to come back whenever I have the time.
BTW, also my first console FPS. |

I played for the potential, and because CCP promised a ten year plan.
I stayed because New Eden is tough, and I knew starting out was going to suck.
Fanfest stopped me playing dead.
I'm still playing in New Eden, just no longer am I restricted to the crappy part of it.
Real AV doesn't stop until all the tanks are dead.

Even as bugged as Dust is, it is still a better game and more challenging than most FPS.
All of the other big name FPS games might have better graphics but their stories and content are tired and repetative. New Eden at last as a rich history that is not just a clone of another game.
Also the top shelf games are loaded with children. This is mainly because these games offer no substsnce other than quick games full of immediate satisfaction. And the very short TTK, and god like aim assist makes these type games very simple to play to the point of getting bored with them very quickly.
Games like COD are cleary made for pimple faced teens since they use kill cams, encourage quick scoping and squatting down in the middle of a road to shoot instead of using cover, strafing, team work and general tactics.
Gun control is not about guns...it's about control.
