As we know, CCP has mentioned many times that they want to give the players to tools to create in the "sandbox". I think that is a great idea...user generated content.
I had a quick conversation (and by conversation, I mean me annoying Saberwing until he acknowledged me) in the DevHangout channel in game on DUST 514. It was here I inquired his familiarity with the Customization of game settings and the map edit (forge) in the Halo Series. He said he was not familiar but would look into. Well, below is a few highlights into that Game Tool.
Example One Example Two Example Three Example Four Example Five
The reason I bring this up is not because I want Legion to be a loby shooter, rather it is the opposite. I want Legion to have the tools to allow players to create what they want and what they envision for the betterment of the community. With a customization function like the examples above, the EVE community could run tournaments and competitions from everything Capture the Flag, to LAV Races, to epic tank battles (think Roman Colosseum with ships) to DropShip challenges and aerial acrobatic events. The possibilities are nearly endless.
EVE Legion needs a tool like this, one where the players can create and generate what it is we want to see. You don't even need to do that much work, just create a literal blank sandbox (or two, one big and one small) and give us the abilities to add a variety of elements that we choose. You can create two maps with a lot of various object to be used at our disposal and the community will take those to maps and make thousands!

Hell yes. I've done LAV racing before, and I got to say, if that **** was in Legion as a player made gamemode (as in we go to a planet, make a route, the challengers show up, line up, and go at some start marker, then whoever makes it to the finish first wins the prizes), then I would love Legion
I'd even try and figure out how to configure my gaming wheel for it

Also, to address the potential concern of, "but everything in New Eden is real and actually happens somewhere"
A possible solution would then be to make the ability to do the things I suggested tied to corporations and skills in the skill tree. Just like a CEO must train to lead a corp, an "Arena Editor" must train to be able to customize the sandbox maps. Likewise, you can tie in player owned or corporation owned Battle Arenas that are located on planets (similar to districts). High sec Arenas could have a certain set of parameters (no betting?, no outside gear?) while null sec Arenas have a different set of parameters (betting, no holds barred type of stuff).
Just a thought. I am sure there are many more great ideas out there as to how this would be possible and why it is a good idea...

I was thinking that it could work different ways for different types of arenas. Things like races Could just be plan and go, things like 1v1's could be done in NPC and Player own arenas (or POA's), and have a VR-style match go on, and you'd give up whatever you used and/or ISk prizes given out to the victors (bets imo should be allowed; no reason why you could restrict them). Lastly, there would be the anything goes battles, where you would give a win condition, and whoever does it first wins.

Hey guys!
Sorry about the late response
I really dig player created content like this. I had a look at a little bit of the video you posted. We've got some things in the pipeline for player created events, tournaments, etc, but this hasn't taken an "official" form yet (and certainly not yet at the point where we'd put it out for feedback). My guess is that it would fit within that "box" though, as anything outside of that would hopefully exist within the persistent / "real" universe of New Eden.
As part of that, the custom map creation is something I know nothing about personally and it would really be down to the Designers to create as it involves a bunch of functionality that we don't currently have!

Custom map creation or randomized world generation would be a -tremendous- aspect of immersion. Static maps, even with randomized socket types, make the game look like it was all built by the same construction company. It's a very high level idea but it certainly would go a long way to adding a deeper sense of being in New Eden.

This isn't just the kind of thing that should just be done for events like tournaments... we aren't supposed to be that kind of game. Tournament content is side-content. This is supposed to be a game about territory. Anyone who owns anything on a planet should be able to customize their district and do incredibly cool things with it, but it should be in the spirit of owning cool stuff.
So of course you run the risk of allowing players to wall-in objectives or create something unpenetrable. That might actually be a good idea, provided you can properly make all placeable objects destroyable. Someone has created a giant wall with a dozen large turret installations mounted on top? Drop an orbital to wipe out all the defenses and move up some rail/artillery tanks to knock that wall down.
Cool, game changing stuff can be done. But anything placeable must also be destroyable. If it's going to be a TRUE sandbox game that is an absolute requirement... and I'm not against it. |

As I think we have seen with the DUST tournaments, the community really supports this type of content and it would be great to allow the players to set the various rules and regulations to dampen complaining
CCP Saberwing wrote:As part of that, the custom map creation is something I know nothing about personally and it would really be down to the Designers to create as it involves a bunch of functionality that we don't currently have! I agree that this is an aspect of the game that you don't currently have. I would also venture a guess that it is something that has not been talked about frequently.
I just hope that you give it some serious thought and consideration. I wont ramble on repeating everything I already said in OP, but I will highlight a few main things:
This is the essence of "User Generated Content" Let the users of Legion generate custom tournaments Let the users of Legion generate custom maps Let the users of Legion generate custom game modes
Tools, Tools and more Tools If you want to give players tools, start with this one
A simple way to give the community A LOT of variety
CertainAffinity has some great videos on YouTube, I hope you take some time to view them and show to fellow devs

I agree Amadi, you are correct that this is a high level idea, but one I think fully looking into and investing in.
By investing in this type of thing early, you allow players great immersion on day one. I don't see how you lay the building blocks for this type of game without the types of tools discussed in this thread (custom map creation and custom game mode creation).

Customizing a district would be awesome!
Personally, I see it as two separate areas:
1) Just as I originally described, customized maps and matches/game modes (CTF, KoTH)
2) A more in depth map "node" system with small, medium and large turrets; small, medium and large sockets/structures. Within each small medium and large, have multiple options to choose from so each district can be truly unique.

They will have to make this game no matter what at this point. Bad enough that WoD got axed after 7 years and Dust being relegated to hotfixes in an already-aging PS3. If Legion doesn't get started at all or gets axed the same way, this will look terrible to not only the communities but also CCP's private investors.

hope is great. but i'm not going to wait around for 2 years while they have a 5 man development team who is pretending to build this game. the guy in charge now is the guy who worked on world of darkness for 5 years and accomplished nothing.
legion is a place holder so it doesn't look as if they failed. if they were going to continue to develop a first-person-shooter they would do that with the ip they've already developed.
don't be mislead by faith. (which is just another name for bad evidence)
there's a reason legion doesn't have a green light yet.

I don't think it is a "no matter what" scenario but I do think Legion is highly likely. I see the biggest challenge (as always) being money. With Dust not living up to their original vision, I am betting they will take a much harder look at what it would actually cost to make a FPS in their vision.

As much as I love this thread and LOVE the idea of user created maps, I just want to say its quite a lot of work to transfer what ever tools the devs use into functional fairly straight forward tools the players can use in game.
They could let us use the Unreal Editor or what ever they use but I will tell you know, that is an intricate bit of software indeed. It would take someone with real skill to create something good. (I'm sure some of you out there maybe even have Unreal Editor experience.)
On the other hand, if the devs could just create the tools to set objectives / restrictions in a match... that could be really awesome. Ok we wouldn't be able to design levels but we could have LAV races setting waypoints to create tracks, dropship races, capture the flag, melee / nova knifes only matches etc.. They could even be found in the special contracts part! Bam! I think that would be a lot more reasonable of a request!

Some sort of toolkit would be really nice. Even if it didn't product ready-for-use-in-game maps, it'd be cool if there was a way to develop/design maps and such using Legion's existing art assets, and propose/submit them to CCP map designers for tweaks, cleanup, and release.

User created content is a deliciously tasty thing that exists in most modern PC games to at least some degree; perhaps the best example of a good, all-powerful explodelicious kit I can cite is the good old Hammer Editor] (of the Valve SDK)
Another thingy that any players of the Fallout series may have seen is the G.E.C.K. (Garden of Eden Creation Kit), and associated kits for Bethshida's other games.

Oh man I know it is possible to be done I am just saying - this is CCP we are dealing with. Always better to set more realistic goals and be happy.
I do hope they give us at least something like this, even if the functionality is basic - just being able to set weapon categories / place way-points would be awesome.

I like the idea of customizing the layout of districts you own in Legion. You could micromanage the placement of certain installations to maximize ISK revenue generated from resources gathered. Of course this would also factor into combat, and you could build arena-like maps designated entirely for balanced combat.
It will never happen though.

Don't be pessimistic. This would also add the Inflitration part of PC as well, where a corp can send in AI drones that can be purchased to scan the district. The AA guns on the hostile district destroy a set amount of drones per hour but are extremely expensive as you destroy higher level, harder to kill, cloak drones. So rich corps can have rich AA guns, but the attacking corp can spam drones till they are blue in the face in order to get a view of the planet. Once data is collected( you can only spam so many drones in a certain amount of time), that part of the map that is scanned is what we have for the map area, the rest is shrouded in darkness. No idea where the ground spawn is, where is enemy home point, what we are dealing with.

I really like the idea of customizing your own districts. They could make land abundant but installations expensive, and resources only available to certain districts.
This way corps on land with little natural resources could either turn into an industrial base to process resources harvested from other districts, or make it public and have racing or arena style.
Ideally there would be as much freedom and customization as possible without exploitation.
