CCP has made it very clear that they cannot do what they want to do on the PS3 and the only way to put out the game they want to put out is on PC. Let's accept this premise. CCP goes on to say that DUST 514 will continue to get updates but much of the focus is going into Legion. Accepting this as well. Based of those two things, we can assume that DUST 514 is basically going to be allowed to die so that Legion can be what DUST was supposed to be. This seems to be what is happening or at least what is being planned.
What happens if Legion is not green lit? What if it dies and is just said "we have decided to not proceed with Legion"? CCP used a third of FanFest to hype Legion and by proxy announce the passing of DUST 514. Google some of the Legion articles. They are all the same; "CCP is looking to learn from the mistakes of DUST 514." So what happens if Project Legion is stopped for whatever reason after all the fanfare about the new project and the lack of faith people now have in DUST (including the players of DUST)?

Its a lie. They will make it no matter what, because they are liars and frauds.
Taking them at their word is foolish. CCP is like a Djinni. They take your wish and twist it into something horrible.

I'm sure the whole "waiting for the green light" thing is just an attempt to buy some time in hopes that this dies down and everyone forgets about DUST before saying anything else about EVE: Legion.
I know CCP has proven its incompetence several times over, but I doubt that they would announce something at FanFest if they didn't have the "green light" to begin development.
That's like signing up for a field trip (or whatever kids call them these days) and handing in the money & slip to your teacher, and then saying "I just need the green light" when your teacher asks for your parent's signature.

CCP has shown a ton of stuff at fanjets before that never became of anything. Flying in atmosphere, ring mining, stuff like that. A 20 minute long keynote with a new "project" however...

It was just a thought I had; after all this pomp and circumstance, why play the "we just need Hilmar's approval" card?
Seriously, go back to the CCP keynote. When Rouge comes on stage, I expected Hilmar to bring a bat to him based on the boss's glare.

Mobius Wyvern wrote:EVR was brought to FanFest with no plans at making it any more than a bare-bones tech demo, much less any Green Light to make it a full game. Don't be mistaken. Legion may be a "project" now, but CCP has already filed for a copyright on "Eve: Legion." Aside from that, as many corps copyright thins all the time, CCP devoted more than half of the Dust dev team to "Project" Legion, which necessarily means they stopped development (or at least the same development speed) on their currently-in-existence FPS game.
It's pretty clear that the game wasn't just a tech demo in that it wasn't showing "what if there was a FPS Eve game?"--as EVR did with "what if we could use VR to pilot a fighter?" but really had no game to it--and certainly not done by "a few devs in their spare time." Legion is envisioned already as a game. Stuff is fleshed out (game speak: iterated upon). A "tech demo" would have been showing the Carbon engine in a FPS set in the Eve universe. Guess what--they've already showed a "tech demo" of a FPS Eve game. They did that in 2009.
There has been tremendous work done on Legion so far. The UI and UX for Legion has been done. There's been a lot of iteration on how to deliver Dust the way it should have been done in the first place. There's iteration on NPE and PVE. Spending time and resources on all this may have been a final hail-mary for the Eve-FPSMMO idea--which is the root of the "Project" title and the splitting of resources (and perhaps the lack of "green lit" status--but I think it's more likely that CCP Shanghai and CCP Rouge are doubling-down that Legion will be seen by Hillmar as the vision of what Dust should have been--the vision they all saw back in 2009 but have been woefully inept at accomplishing until now.
And you what? Jean-Charles is right. Legion looks like what Dust should have been all along. It shows an FPS game in a richly developed universe that's beautiful and full of opportunities. Hillmar loves to dream. He dared to dream about Eve 15 years ago and made it happen. It seems like Jean-Charles has the same dream for Legion. It really seems like he understands the grandness of the vision and the need for the vision--the actual vision--to be executed. Halfway won't cut it. Halfway is what birthed Dust 514. Certainly, I don't fault the individual developers on 514. I'm certain that they work hard on the project. But leadership to execute the vision has been lacking, and seemingly lacking for years now.
Hopefully, Hillmar will see this, and see that despite the Dust 514 community's initial negative reaction--which was largely because there was no direction on whether our existing Mercs would make the journey to Legion--we'd LOVE to play the vision of what we all want Dust to be. We all want Dust 514 as was shown in 2009. And if that's called Dust 514 or Legion, it doesn't matter. The only thing that matters is that Dust 514--the Eve FPS idea--lives on and executed properly. Give us that, and we'll play it.

What Legion SHOULD have been was an announcement for a mid-term (2 year) plan to shift SOME of the resources away from DUST. NOT the majority like they have done, but still a significant portion. We'd get some development, INCLUDING SOME NEW CONTENT, and that content would include key elements that have been LONG overdue - player marketplace, PvE, proper corp controls, etc. There would also be the also-overdue patches, hotfixes and cleaning up of Planetary Conquest.
While DUST continues, but at a slower rate, development for the next major iteration would be happening. This would be the move to PS4 and PC with the new build (NOT a new game, though it might be a significant departure from how DUST works at present): Legion.
When Uprising came out, it was practically a new game. When they did the 1.7 vehicle revamp, that changed things pretty significantly as well. DUST players are no strangers to the game being ripped out from under us and rebuilt in a new image. THAT'S WHAT WE WERE LOOKING FORWARD TO.
But you didn't rebuild DUST. You scrapped it to build something else that looks and acts like DUST, but you're directly admitting it isn't DUST in spite of that.
You're killing the game we paid you to keep alive, and you're spending our money on something else instead of what you assured us you were doing. You actively pushed for us to help you fund DUST, then threw it out the window in favour of the new toy. And to make things worse, YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW IF THE NEW PROJECT YOU'RE ABANDONING US FOR WILL WORK. |

And small article for read.. i named it THE LOVE OF CCP
CCP Games used the press conference for Dust 514, an existing free-to-player multiplayer shooter on the PlayStation 3, to announce a PC title called Project Legion. The team is unsure if Project Legion will ultimately be turned into a full release, and have repeatedly stated that the ultimate decision will be based on the fanGÇÖs reaction to the screenshots, ideas and footage that have been released for the game.
The fan reaction has been immediate, and largely negative.
Sean Decker is the VP of Product Development at CCP, and he told Polygon the days of waiting a few years to show off a game while hoping the fans like it are done. "Put it out in front of them, see if they like it," he said. "EVR [later renamed Eve: Valkyrie] was a perfect example of that. Legion will or will not be an example of that, weGÇÖll see, and if Legion does well, great, weGÇÖll continue to invest in it. If it doesnGÇÖt, weGÇÖll open up some beers, have some fun and say, "'Ok, that was fun, letGÇÖs do something different now and go again.'"
That still doesnGÇÖt address the fact that there was next to no news about Dust 514 during the speech, and the small buy loyal following that game has earned have taken to the forums to express their disdain. Decker chalks this up as part of the learning process.
"You announced the game you were promising us since 2009 again ... for PC... with no concrete plans what you can give the Dust players who have supported you for years now," one member of the community stated. "Heck. Had you at least that figured out the backlash wouldn't have been as severe."
This response is indicative of the overall community reaction to the news of Project Legion, which has been largely negative. They want these features in the PlayStation 3 game they've been supporting since launch, and feel as if they're been abandoned for the new PC title.
CCP Games hasn't done much to placate the fans on the message boards, but at Fanfest we were told that sometimes there are bumps on the road to a great product.
"I ran DICE for awhile, and the first shooter game out of DICE was a game called Codename Eagle, which tons of people donGÇÖt know anything about, and never would, and probably shouldnGÇÖt," he told Polygon. "I think it sold like 20,000 units and got a 50 Metacritic, maybe a 40, something like that. It was horrible, and at the end of the day, teams usually have to do multiple iterations of something to get to something really great."
It takes learning, stumbling and then getting back up to make something great in other words, and CCP is hoping that Project Legion is the game to execute on the concepts behind Dust 514 in a way thatGÇÖs much more enjoyable.
""And honestly, we didnGÇÖt make a great game to begin with. It has to be a great game""
"At the end of the day we want to take the things weGÇÖve learned from Dust, and yes itGÇÖs in the same IP, same place and all the rest of it, but we want to do some fundamentally different things with it that we feel we missed out on and that we didnGÇÖt do right," Decker said.
"And honestly, we didnGÇÖt make a great game to begin with. It has to be a great game. We did all of these things to try and, we tried to do too much honestly in terms of connecting it into the universe and thereGÇÖs this MMO piece and all the rest of it, blah blah blah, as opposed to, 'I have a blast second to second. I love this game second to second and I love it minute to minute, hour to hour, and so on and so forth.'"
So do they see Dust 514 existing a few years in the future? Does the game have a future?
"How many players do we have?" Decker asked about this hypothetical future. I told him I didnGÇÖt know.
"Neither do I, so thatGÇÖs the question. I mean, in terms of three years from now, if there are tons of people playing it, and people are really enjoying it, weGÇÖll keep doing it. And if people are like, GÇÿyou know what, thanks for all the fish and weGÇÖve moved,GÇÖ then we wonGÇÖt. ItGÇÖs as simple as that, and I think itGÇÖs true for any game service."

I can't remember when exactly it was first announced and I'm too tired right now to go digging through videos to find it, but EVR was put together by a handful of developers in their off time as a hobby. They showed it to the rest of the studio and everyone liked it so much they decided to show it and fanfest to see how people reacted. The reaction was overwhelmingly positive so they made it into a full game.

This is correct.
As far as Legion goes, and what that would mean for DUST if we didn't get the green light (very unlikely at this stage, the team has been working really hard and doing well), I honestly don't know.

Why? I'm not even sure if they should even bother getting it on the ps4 at all. Sony having to check each update, giving them the green light to deploy it, and having CCP pay them to release the update. How much will this hold back the PC version cuz of all the steps to take with Sony?
How far can they go with the ps4? How much will they have to hold back Legion all together because of the ps4 hardware limit?
If they can get updates deployed everyday, have nearly no limit when it comes to hardware then I'd rather have it be on PC only.

Anger is subsiding for just pure unadulterated frustration and a lot of fear ("Mah SP! Mah AUR!"). Based on more of the stuff I have read about how long this thing has been going on for (like 6 months which is half of the entire official release of the game) and just your statements now of "it is likely going to happen", why was the community/customers told in this manner? I mean, this is Ozymandias going I did it 20 minutes ago.
Between the "hey, it might not even happen", the dev blog stating the likely untrue statement that it is just an entirely new game, every DUST 514 speech being about this different project, and no questions answered at FanFest y'all did a really good job at just instilling "hate boners" in us all...

I distinctly remember CCP stating when questioned about porting DUST 514 they where not going to do it until they got it running smoothly on PS3 (or basically to that effect)
So, I guess using the same development team, most likely the same engine (Unreal)*, and calling it something different isn't a port...
Speaking of the Unreal game engine, I downloaded the UDK (I like making mods for standalone games) and found some interesting things in the licensing, wow CCP sure is slick. |

Unless I'm really mistaken if you don't have to pay the 25% royalties after the first $50,000 on a game that is free, also you can sell add-ons and mods under the same premise. Anybody can download and use the UDK licensing and royalties depend on certain factors. (CCP is using Unreal 3 not 4 they have different licensing) |
