Why didn't anyone tell me they are so fun to fly?!
Up until a militia tank makes mince meat out of you. Especially demoralising when you shoot your rockets at a milita tank and it does very little whilst their weapons DO INSANE DAMAGE! :( :(
I r sad. The amount of SP you need invested to make these things super good is crazy compared to how borked tanks are.
But, I still has fun flying :) Just wish the maps were better designed for a dropship. |

The most fun thing to do in Dropships I feel is stunt flying. Gives a feeling or overpowering manliness of the fear of plummeting to the ground, knowing that if I crash I just blew a very expensive hole through my wallet.
Ones to try: -Backflipping off the edge of one of the towers -Flying through the Table-Top -Flying through the Pyramid (during a Domination when the point is inside for extra challenge) -Triple Backlfip (non ADS) -Helix Dive (Back/Frontflip with a simultaneous sideflip diagonally) -1st Person Speedrun (Flying as low and as fast as possible in 1st person)
I sometimes just spend matches doing stupid stuff in dropships cause hey, if you dont crash or get breathed on youre fine.

I second Denchlad's post. Many of the things you learn just stunt flying actually turn out to be useful in combat for dropping swarms on your tail or confusing those targeting you.
Try Afterbuner moves too. It can be used as an air brake or like a cars handbrake to do tight turns. Fly right at buildings and use the AB to do insanely late pull ups to avoid contact, or the same with dive. Charge at the ground and use the AB to stop at the last moment. Or use AB turns, (flick it on as you start the turn, then off again straight away) to do turns as close and tight to tall towers as you can.
You will fail. We all still do. But you will be a much better pilot for it. Piloting is one of those skills where to get up with the best you need to learn were that absolute limit is. THe way you find the limit is when you cross it. This means death, but its a worth while investment.

They are very fun to fly! Quite addicting too! Especially when you start working with a crew on board. I concur with what judge and denchlad are saying, stunt flying is a great way to learn the limitations of the dropship and is pretty darn fun too! Especially if you listen to some good songs whilst you do it, I would listen to the silent cartographer song from halo CE and stunt fly the first game I got on in chromo and early uprising to set the mood
I still play a few games to keep my skills in check, ground shark, where I follow a road as fast and as low as I can. ground vehicle, where I fly low enough to the ground in the red to be classified as a ground vehicle. Mountain hugger, getting as close to the mountains as possible going as fast as possible. Dive bomber, dive down at maximum speed and level off with thrust or AB just before you hit the ground land for a second and shoot off. Stunt pilot, line harvest is great for this, fly between all the buildings I can, under table top through the boxes and A etc. Building dodger, do quick speedy runs through any sort of city complex get real close to buildings and practice dodging simulated swarm hits and the like.
There is more but I'll stop anyway these are all really fun and everyone of them simulates a maneuver that can be very useful in combat, practice is really important for a dropship pilot, otherwise I wouldn't crash at all! |

Shouldve added the afterburner part, but agreed, I taught myself to fly by stunt flying, and it has saved me a lot of isk many times just by my abiliy to quickly evade and outwit and enemy.
EDIT:
Want a real challenge? Fly through the research facility at speed, sideways. Now thats a real isk burner if you cant decelerate quick enough

Python for life! The squirmyness is actually just the Python's light weight and higher agility. The Incubus goes faster in a straight line, but the Python will fly rings around it.
The Python is hands down the best dogfighter, mainly due to its superior ability to climb. I can out fly many Python pilots in my 4881 armor Inky when we are decreasing altittude, but I can never get my gun high enough in a climb to connect with a Python if the guy is paying attention. I would imagine the Python is a better tank killer as well, especially with the Caldari ADS bonuses.
All that said, the Incubus is THE choice for anti infantry. As Awry mentioned it is nice and stable, not only when manuvering, but even when getting hit by things like forges there is less movement transfered due to its weight, its ability to stack armor obviously makes it more survivable, which lets you stay lower and remain on site longer. I personally don't run reps, so I have no cool downs to wait for or mods to activate. Obviously serious damage requires a retreat to the supply depot, but 4800+ armor lasts a suprisingly long time as long as i'm not flying stupid.
I think both ships have their own positives and styles, and both can be massivly effective in the proper situations. I think it comes down to what kind of flying you want to do. I'll get into the Python one day for sure, but I love flying my iron brick as low and fast as I can, then parking over a spot and raining devistation while I soak up damage.

Learning how to do a barrel roll back when the flight ceiling barely reached the bottom edge of the MCCs was the moment I figured out how to do everything in a regular Dropship. I don't always fly fancy, but I will when I need or want to. ADS is an entirely different beast though, I struggle to get kills without hovering, and aiming at all is a total *****. To top it off, they're ridiculously expensive, so "crash and learn" is no longer friendly towards my wallet. Ugh.

Yeah, must be fun to be an invincible deathdealer, killing people on the ground who cannot shoot back at all (seeing as how tanks can't elevate their turrets high enough, and AV isn't effective enough to prevent you from just activating an afterburner and lifting off at lightspeed and be able to outrun swarm missiles with ease), and only have your own tunnelvision and incompetence to fear since the only way non ADS pilots can shoot you down is when you're not paying attention.
Yeah, God-Mode must be hella fun!

Dropship =/= Assault Dropship
The point of this thread is they are fun to fly, regardless of the ability of a pilot who can blow you off the ground with superior piloting abilities.
