Do forget the light, heavy and sidearm skills to reduce the CPU costs of fitting so you can fit your suits for max effect.

I had 5 to ADV though, not super smart. Fixed that with the 1.8 refund. I did have 3-4 weapons to proto, but even still, now that I just hit 30 mil, I still never run proto, too expensive. Kudos for raising your core skills ! I am at 31 millions and have 2 protosuit since respect and only one weapon level 5 the scrambler rifle, now i dont even use it anymore and that is sad cause i would have transfered those to vehicles. Inany cases watch out for those last points that would raise other areas of your merc better. Spend wisely and do the maths!

However racial suit skills matter a lot more now so you really should have at least one suit specced to proto if you have 20 mil SP. It doesn't matter if you never even use proto suits, you need to invest the SP to get the bonuses when using standard or advanced suits.

Even before 1.8 it was worth Scout 5 for me - for the range bonus and I didn't need dampening 5 (unless I was planning to run proto gal with 4 complex damps a single basic with damp lv3 was all I needed). Anyway 24mil now and still only got gal scout to 5 (only points is DS command)- I rarely use proto, though admittedly in 1.8 it's worth it. Trouble is, I finally have everything I need - I don't want to Invest more in weaponry until CCP calm down with nerfs/buffs... If they reduced the cost of complex kin-cats though.... My win condition when playing Dust is not tied to my KDr or even to a large extent my Win:Loss. I live for the long term profit. I want the economic battlefield to be as rich and complex as the ground we fight on.

Was around 18-20m SP i got my first Proto suit. in EVE online there is a saying about being able to "Sit" In your ship or actually "Fly" it. Referring to the skills and proffeciencies to actually Fly that Ship Hull rather then just have enough skills to sit in it... Not use it well. Works here in DUST aswell. ADV suits with core skills maxed are beast. Proto suits without core skills and modules to support it.. Is just a waste and doesn't yield results. The Learning curve of working with the same weapons and modules you'll use on a Proto suit allowing you to gain familiarity and knowledge of the items, but with an inferior suit.. also simulates a learning curve in DUST allowing your player skills to improve by virtue of the competition you are facing and thriving in.

Otherwise I agree that the few extra percentage points of bonus are not a big enough return on investment. The 1.2 million it costs to get to level 5 is probably better spent elsewhere for most people unless you are planning on actually using the proto suits themselves. I use STD weapons and my Dragonfly suit 99% of the time. The rare time when I use STD or PRO weapons is when I have a bunch of them i got for free.

I use STD weapons and my Dragonfly suit 99% of the time. As a reformed Logi, I have over half my points in dropsuit upgrades. Honestly though, aside from PC, you really don't need the proto suits. The passives make your standard gear adequate and you can amass more wealth. With my favorite all standard fit of 9k ISK, I'm always ISK positive and usually KDR positive, even solo. If you're going 1:1 against proto and advanced suits in standards and BPOs, you're doing it right. A well run team of protostompers will kill you, but unless you're really in it for the KDR or obscenely wealthy, who cares?

I was thinking to max out my Cores first and build up my ISK bank, so when I finally did go Proto I could fit it the way I wanted, and afford to run it. (I did take SMG, Swarms and now Combat Rifle to Proto and also 4-5 proficiency.) But the Million Clone challenge got me 3M SP (with Booster), so I went Proto Minmater Commando for dual Light weapons and projectile/explosive weapon bonuses. Now when I'm swarming the enemy, and they hop out of a LAV or HAV thinking I'm helpless, I at least stand a chance with my Combat Rifle (more than a chance, really). Love to see them take a few hits, decide to hop back in their vehicles, and finish them off with my swarms anyway. Subsequently with the latest Commando challenge (and other SP I was banking), I took my Minmater Logi to Proto. I also have advanced Scout. Thinking back now, the suit bonuses are pretty nice, even if not actually using the Proto version. If doing over again, I probably wouldn't wait quite so long to go Proto in a suit - although I still would 99/100 times use Adv./Std. or even Militia. Now I have 25M SP and the things I have left are mostly level 4 and 5s. Additional character improvements are slow going, but still I'm estimating I need another 13-15M SP to max out the things I want for my infantry skills, and then it's on to vehicles (assuming I'm not completely sick to death of the game by then). With your cores maxed out your ADV suits will do more work than a lot of peoples PRO suits and you will save alot of ISK.
