how much do i owe Apple for babysitting?
I got a Wii U and Disney Infinity for that purpose and as a plus I get to play things like Mario 3D world too.
@OP that's pretty awesome how you are getting your Dad to play, I'd like to play with my 15 year old but he has decided to be a devotee of the PC master race and plays more Minecraft than anything else.

The Zelda or Mario parties of our time. Man some magic memories. We did a lot of other things obviously, but the video game moments are some how more present. I didn't mean family gaming so much as new players struggling to get into the game.
It is the biggest problem for me with this game. I see the sheer numbers of 1-13 players every game and I just feel sad. How can I enjoy a good performance when I know that some noob never had a chance? It sucks. It feels better being stomped and knowing that any kill I made I deserved.

I only play Civ V and Banished on my PC anymore. Bravely Default (3DS) and Dust occupy the vast majority of my time recently. I have Minecraft, and at one time I would spend days and days and weeks on it, but not so much anymore.

Alot of older gamers are better set for inverted controls. I always had trouble with shooters because of this. Somewhere around ff12 I just snapped and can use any config. Something with the camera.

Michael Arck wrote:Yea I have read this story before a million times over. They all sound the same. The OP brings in new player, new player either has or had played FPS games. The new player doesn't do well. The OP makes some statement of "see this is why we need NPE because my friend keeps dying"
Listen, me and many others got their butts handed to them when we first arrived to New Eden. You know what I got? A HTFU speech. And you know what, they were right. It doesn't take much for a player to skill up some so he can be competitivve. Plus NPE doesn't teach somehow how to fight, how to hide, or know when to engage and disengage.
Honestly, your dad couldn't make it in COD or BF, no offense. You want him to enjoy the game? Tell him about the harshness of New Eden, because the universe is built on it. Then its up to him what he wants to do. This isn't one of those games where you can pick up and have causual fun, really. It's a jagged pill that you learn to swallow or spit back out.
I'm all for helping the new players but the sympathy violins being played needs to stop. If some new guys I met understand this and accept the challenge, how come the others cannont?
My friends all handled COD and BF fine, in fact they are good at them , but I have brought 7 people into this game and not one has stayed more than two days, every one of them quit because of the immediate stomping. I've played tough games in video games and in life and the psychology is the same for both, you have to first give people some knowledge and skills, then you have to challenge them with competition without overwhelming them. You will not get someone really good at MMA by placing them in continuous competition against black belts and pros and no lessons or practice. You sure don't make a game for entertainment that way.
Because, that's why.

I had sort of the same problem and I was comfortable with FPS just not multiplayer FPS. This is also why I don't know how much BL2 will help your Dad. Campaign FPS and PvP are such different animals IMHO. Anyways, I have my normal sensitivities at like 40 and ads at like 70 and that seems to be working OK

CCP has been living up to the reputation they already earned with me GÇô one or squandered opportunities that looked to be big, but deflated into crap decisions.
I thought for sure DUST was lining up to be the next HALO on the PS3. Nope. Tanks were going to be awesome in 1.7. Nope. TTK was going to be decreased. Nope (cloaks ruined that). To be fair, Tanks were awesome in 1.7. They were unkillable, unstoppable monsters, mainly due to the nerfing of AV and the buffing of a tank's "wave of opportunity," which, incidentally, turned into a "tsunami of opportunity."
In 1.8, the TTK IS vastly improved. You can't take a specific case--a shotgun scout, for example--and apply that logic across the board to all weapons and all suits in all situations. And even with shotgun scouts, it's possible to survive. There's been a few times I have went scout-to-scout with dueling shotguns and it just matters how close you are, reaction times, etc. And no, it's not a brick tanked suit, at least in that sense. It's a standard level Gallente Scout with 3x militia plates.
Comparing TTK for other scenarios and the picture is much clearer that CCP has done one hell of a job with getting it right. Heavies don't die to solo assaults easily anymore. Medium vs medium suit is balanced.
I can freely admit when CCP has royally ****** up somewhere; sorry, though, 1.8 isn't it.

My previous gaming experience with fps against real players was goldeneye, so i knew i had a learning curve to get over. After playing for a week i convinced myself that i was a horrible player and the game was hard because the other players were good. If i wanted to be good at fps's this was a great place to start. If i could get good here,i should be able to be decent in other games.

It's called Self Determination Theory.
It's why we play video games in general.
Quote:Posted by Avimaan Syam March 28, 2012
The last talk I caught at GDC was called GÇ£Breaking the Rules of Game Design: When to Go Against Competence, Autonomy and RelatednessGÇ¥ by Kaitlyn Burnell at Naughty Dog (all the Naughty Dog talks were pretty extraordinary). The brunt of BurnellGÇÖs talk was to take three metrics for user retention that most social/MMO-style games adopt and look at how designers can play around with these user needs.
Breaking them down:
Autonomy: Autonomy lets players feel in charge of their interactions and in control of the world. When you take that away from the player, they want to rebel against the power wrestled away from them. Burnell stressed that it was important that broken autonomy be focused in the game world instead of the game design, so players donGÇÖt feel frustrated with gameplay itself.
Competence: Competence lets players feel like masters of a skillGÇôthat they excel at something (this something being your game). When you take that away from the player, they suddenly feel helpless.
Relatedness: Relatedness lets players feel like theyGÇÖre contributing to something bigger than themselves. It gives credence to their actions. Taking this away from the player makes them feel alone, isolated.
Do we want our players to feel rebellious, isolated, lonely, helpless, frustrated? For an extended period of time, probably not. But in small doses? In my opinion, itGÇÖs more difficult for interactive media to delve into rich emotional context because it usually comes with some discomfort, which a user interacting with the system always has the ability to choose a more comforting decision. Generally speaking, we donGÇÖt turn off a movie when a character makes a bad decision.
I believe that if we can illicit these emotions from users by breaking autonomy, competence, and relatedness in small pockets, we can deepen the userGÇÖs experience. The lower the lows, the higher the highs feel.
DUST 514 used to trigger so much of this basic theory in game design and concept in Replication and Chromosome Builds.
Slowly CCP Shanghai has thrown out competency and autonomy in game design to make DUST 514 "Easy" ... and it has ruined so much of the gameplay spark for the every day player..
This is only sad because it was an attempt at making the game more accessible for all people coming to DUST 514. And in reality we just needed to establish a proper learning Curve around there already Established competency and autonomy levels which where much larger scale successes then exhibited in Todays DUST 514.
Here is the famous learning curve from EVE online Instead of building a teaching and learning process around CCP's already established battle Academy... Like almost ANYONE who cared about DUST pleaded with CCP to do... They Just Dumbed DUST down as a whole... And hurt what made DUST special... The actual complex intense gameplay DUST had has been traded for this easy boring dumbed down version. |

When I started this game in closed beta I was getting raped by squads of Imperfects with proto suits, Duvolles, and core nades(could carry 3 back then) in my azz.
TBH I feel new players have it easier than I did when I started.
Best advise I can give to your dad is to join a corp soon as possible, learn from corp members where to put sp and how to fit suit properly, and squad up, orbitals from a full squad are game changers.
Take care, Coin
