In trying to figure out the role an assault suit should play, many people are missing out the key feature behind what an assault is and just suggesting skills based on what they think an assault is or what they would like the suit to do.
So in order to really define the role, I think it would be a good idea to try and define the word as a community. Try and be as succinct as possible, with no copy/paste from dictionary.com (please). Also try not to suggest skill bonuses, although I realise that this may be your only way of demonstrating what best reflects the word in Dust.
To me, the word means GÇ£attackGÇ¥. Whether through physical or mental force. The words GÇ£pressureGÇ¥ and GÇ£agressiveGÇ¥ come to mind immediately as well as images of soldiers storming the beaches of Normandy or the Battle of Berlin. From this I feel that assault suits should be the go to suit when pressing an objective, skill bonuses for which we can figure out once we have defined the meaning.
Thanks for your time guys, make this a good one.

Mobile, specializing into sustaining its fire for lengthened amounts and shortening their repair/cooldown windows.
While they aren't good at defending a point, they are good at constantly attacking and whittling down their defense.
IMO an assault should have: A basic tanking/repair bonus- gallente gets armor repair efficacy, amarr gets plate efficacy. Minmatar gets shield recharge, caldari gets shield extender efficacy.
A basic damage bonus- minmatar/amarr's bonuses are fine. Caldari gets a RoF bonus to hybrid Rail weapons. Gallente gets Effective range or a straight dmg bonus.
Along with their fitting bonus to weaponry.
I refuse to gve honor to your 'god' so therefore i dual tank.

The one that can push forward, deal damage and overall be suited to many different situations. Where a setinel or scout may fall i would expect assaults to use their versitality to adapt and overcome the objective, although other suits would be far more suited to do the job. Not a "im the best at everything" suit, but more of a "throw what youve got at me, im willing to tackle it even if i die" kind of role. |

They guy that moves from place to place quickly to fortify a position that is being attacked. It doesn't have any special weapons or equipment. It just gets there and shoots things. They don't attack from flanks, they don't special ops anything, and they don't wear the best armor. They are the middle ground of all. Capable in numbers to constantly assault an area and mop up after the heavy hitters have come and gone. Artillery/armor takes out any hard targets, while assault takes out the soft targets. |

Assaults to me are the most versatile offensive-based role on the field. You can try to argue that the Logi could fit that role but because of their key limitations(lack of Sidearm for one) they're better off as the most versatile defensive-role.

On a serious note, they should be the jack of all stats, the quintessntial infantry unit. Mobile enough to get into position, enough firepower to kill opposing units, but requiring more than one truly shine.
I feel like they should have a bonus to their damage based on how many friendles are in their proximity. Some like 2% per friendly, capped out at 10% (five friendlies=full squad=10% bonus damage) promoting concentrated team effort and squad based tactics.

front line attacking force the tip of the spear. so you would need a suit that has good firepower some speed and able to regain HP fast. so maybe thats why the scout is the new assault because they have all the traits you are looking for in an assault suit i think they should be more recon less assault.

I thought about that but then it incentivises just using the assault role.
I do like where this is going though, quite a few people seem to think that speed and mobility are a deciding factor into the role of an assault. I also like the suggestions of having hit and run abilities and being able to get back into the fight quicker but maybe this steps on the toes of scouts a little? |

Jack of all trades, master of nothing.
I can't understand why anyone like playing straight assault. They're good at most things, sure, but they don't really have a niche. I play Scout because I like the EWar advantage while also having a defensive disadvantage, meaning I need to be clever and play my strengths. My alt is a logistics character so combat isn't a priority as I work more toward supporting my team in other ways. (Vehicles are just for fun or countering other vehicles). An assault's role can be done by almost any class and frankly, it's pretty boring only being able to shoot people.

To toss around some suggestions I was discussing with friends, while I like the pg/CPU reduction on assaults currently, as well as the various weapon bonuses (on all except the caldari) and I enjoy the idea of rep/tank related bonuses I almost feel that the most appropriate generic assault bonus would be a 5% reload speed per level bonus.
This would allow the pg/CPU bonus to be switched over to commandos making them more able to fit things like swarms or snipers or plasma cannons while also enabling a small nerf in pg/CPU that makes them easier to balance. |

In my opinion what each role is meant to be:
The Scout:
Guerrilla soldier and recon soldier. Moves about the Field either putting pressure away from the front or finding weaknesses/leading flanking maneuvers with the front.
The Pilot:
Operations expert on vehicles. Their abilities would augment the vehicles capabilities while being diminished in infantry combat (The ability to augment vehicles in various attributes like turn speed, damage, acceleration, top speed, but only carries a side arm with the additional squishiness of light suits.)
The Assault:
Shock Trooper/Frontline Soldier. The typical bulk of the line designed to quickly push or adjust to wherever the front may be moving. Mobility is what allows it to quickly shift priorities (Important to note when considering Sentinels/Commandos.)
The Logistics:
The Support class. Designed to utilize equipment to establish fortified positions and bring troops to the front/maintain the frontline troops. They can also provide fire support with the rest of the line.
The Sentinel:
The Heavy Support Class, meant to hold a fortified position, however it's low mobility means it cannot respond to ever evolving threats as quickly as the assault and scouts.
The Commando:
The Hybrid Assault which trades mobility for a more versatile selection of weaponry.
Vehicle Roles:
LAV: Fast but vulnerable ground Vehicles designed for light transport and harassment.
MAV: Slower but more sturdy vehicles designed primarily for transport and small weapons platform support.
HAV: Slow but extremely sturdy vehicles designed to carry heavy and light weapons platform support.
Fighters: Fast skirmishing aerial vehicles designed to harass both land and air units. Fighters would be incredibly fast but flimsy like LAVS.
Dropships: Transport aerial vehicles designed for small weapons platform support.
Bombers: Heavy aerial vehicles designed for air to surface bombardment. They would be sturdy like Tanks and capable of obliterating fortified positions, but given their size and slow acceleration they would be bullet magnets in the sky and would go down if focus fired.
Now what is and what I think should be are obviously two different things.
Edit: Also keep in mind having a 16v16 cap on a battlefield style game makes a lot of this stuff underwhelming and often things just turn into Halo TDM. |

What if you gave assault suits the following.
Utility weapon Slot: A specially designed slot able to hold AV weapons, a grenade, or knives.
This would give Assault suits a truly assault worthy specialization, able to field a sidearm, a light weapon, AND an AV weapon or a knife or another type of grenade. This would increase their versatility by enabling them to do something no other suit can do. Field three weapons or two weapons and two types of grenades.
EDIT: While still preserving the role of the Commando to hold two light weapons. Maybe the commando would need a grenade slot to balance this out. |

The assault suits should be specialized suits designed to make the most of their races's weapons, while still being able to tank a lot of HP and be fast.
For instance the Amarr Assault's reduction to heat buildup for laser weapons makes the scrambler an absolute beast with it.
I think scout mechanics are fine right now, but they shouldn't be able to fit so much extra HP. Scouts should be super weak and fragile so that the second they are spotted they are dead. An assault should be able to hold his ground in combat, but a scout should have to run away.

They would have to add a useful AV weapon then as I think a forge gun would be OP on an assault suit and that is the only good AV weapon at the moment.
The Assaults are fine, the issue is there are certain suits like the gallente scout that got over buffed. And Commandos pay for their double light weapon and slightly more ehp by being slow moving fat suits. Sentinels with a Light weapon still generally out perform commandos. There being no useful AV light weapon is part of the reason why most commandos are unnecessary and are just non-competitive fun builds. Logi suits shouldn't be able to have more ehp then an assault suit as well.
Assaults are fine, just everything else needs a little tweaking around them. |

Well I just mean that if you buff assaults then it's going to put heavies and scouts down into the **** poor pit again where they were before 1.8. The trick is getting them to have a defining role, which assaults do, it's just some scout racial variants and some heavy racial variants are better than others and likewise better than the assaults.
It's a temperamental thing this so called balance. It's more to do with inequality amongst racial variants then inequality amongst class types. |
