Hey guys I just started playing this game a few days ago. After playing in a few matches for players "under a certain skill point" I seem to have stepped into a gauntlet. Other players have way more shield and armor and very powerful weapons. I did some reading on that and found that I am now in the mix with every player in the game no matter how many skill points they have so it will be rather difficult to start out.
I am not very effective at killing other players so my main concern is, how do I best support my team without the killing? For these first few months or so while I gain SP I need to be able to help my team some way rather than just running in and getting 0 kills and 20 deaths. Which has happened and I got a lovely mail from one of my team mates who was extremely pissed about me being so horrible.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated and I will try them out. |

1. Ignore that hater. Instead of yelling at you, he should have suggested points to help you.
2. I'm glad you're asking for help on other avenues to help the team other than being a soldier. That's smart of you to know you need skill points under your belt.
If you just want to support for a little while until you get your enough sp to get back into rocking killing, invest conservatively in uplinks and nanohives first.
Uplinks nets you +25 per person that uses your uplink. Even having one of these available is helpful for the team. Since you can only deploy one at a time, your best coarse of action is to find a place on the outskirts of town between your main spawns and the main objectives. That way, you are guaranteed to net quite a few points when all other uplinks fail. This may not sound like it happens a lot, but I know when I run out of uplinks in town, I don't always catch it before that happens. I'm very likely to use yours to get back into town, as would many other blueberries.
NEVER throw your uplink down facing a wall. We spawn in the direction you placed the uplinks. That means if you drop it facing a corner, we spawn in facing the corner. That sucks if we're getting blindsided.
Hives are a great backup. I would hold them until you either have a member that needs them, or you find a high traffic spot where a lot of action is happening. 10+ points per person that reloads at one. If its a hive that heals, you also get +25 for healing them, but that's much higher tier. Don't invest so high if you don't plan on going down the support path. It's very sp expensive but a lot of fun so don't let that scare you.
Injectors and Repair tool go hand in hand. If you want to try these, you should never run one without the other. Injector revives clones but you need to be really smart about using them. If you revive someone just so they could die immediately after, you're really not helping the team. Same with reviving someone and not having a rep tool. So you revived them....now they get to stand in a corner and pray for no redberry to find them. Still not helping. However, if you do skill into these two, you're going down the rabbit hole of support. They by far net you the most sp of any of the equipment if used correctly, but like I said, it won't actually help you on the battlefield with experience. They do help you with spatial awareness (ie, that merc is dead, what killed him?) versus OMG I must kill all the things right in front of me.
TL;DR For being better overall, work on spatial awareness. Learn that running away is a valid tactic that you should use often. Pick up uplinks and nanohives for quick sp to help support the team.

Use the squad finder because even for closed BETA players with 30 million SP running solo has become an absolute nightmare. Join one of the new player corps like DUST University. They will help you figure out the game.

I found myself in the same position when i first started. I'll tell you this, a really great way to support team and gain sp is by supporting Snipers and Pilots and of course dropping good links in great places. I learned that if i jumped into a blues DS he might travel to a great spot for links and snipe. Or jump in a tank with a turret, though these are more rare now than not, and jump out at opportune times to rep it before it explodes, No points but Good support and you might get some kills in the tank or dropship turret. I know others may recommend getting into the mix of things with infantry but unless your running a tight squad with proto bears and are ok with dying alot I would advise against it. Another great way that i wish more people would do is Logi Medics who stay in cover until the CORRECT time to revive and rep. Send me in game message and you can run with us or join my chat "Friends of Helghast" to run with others. Happy Hunting and

Listen to Lee. His comments/suggestions are right on point. I'll throw a couple extra points on top of his just for some additional info.
Personally, I'm not really good at the infantry aspect of running into a CQC firefight. When I do this, I normally die a LOT. So I do Sniping and logistics. By Sniping, you can stay (somewhat) out of the main fray while still supporting your team. With this, I'm going to give you the best advice I can. Don't just sit on the redline waiting for people to pop out so you can shoot them. Get into an overwatch position where you can support your teammates. The one thing people like less than anything in this game is a lone wolf who only cares about his K/D ratio and sits there on the red line and doesn't contribute to the actual battle. If you have a mic, even better. You can be the eyes of your squad, calling out enemy locations/enemy droplinks/nanohives/etc. warn them of tanks coming in... In addition, if you are in that position and there's a firefight, if you can hit a couple reds and drop their armor/shields down, it will make it easier for the infantry guys to kill them. You also get a +25 SP kill assist bonus so it gives you a little bit. This is mostly for Domination mode. (one null cannon)
For Skirmish, if you are going to be static (which I wouldn't recommend because multiple shots from one point make you an easier target) get into a position where you can see 2 or more of the null cannons so you can use supporting fire on as many as possible. If a battle goes down at "B", you can support it. If it goes down at "C" you can support it. You can also occasionally pick off random runners here and there when you aren't directly supporting a firefight. However, what you will likely want to do (depending on the map and if you are running w/ a squad) is constantly move around to help where needed. If your team has taken 3 of 4 null cannons, there's a good chance they will be going after the 4th. Move into a position where you can watch that one and at least one other.
As for the Logistics, I'm not going to go into it at all because Lee put it all out there. Follow his info.
Last note, as for #1.. It's been said but I'll reiterate. Ignore the haters. If someone is getting pissed at you, he is not doing his job which is to make you better. Better players make the game more fun for everybody. When I first started I got SMOKED on a regular basis. I was getting stat lines similar to you... 1-15, 2-17, 5-19... But then over time it started getting to a 5-10, 8-11, 9-10... This is a game that literally just takes practice. It's the only FPS I've ever played so my learning curve was higher than most. However, keep it up and eventually you will swap it and have a positive K/D. The first time you have that 12/6 or 14/9, it's going to make the anguish and crappy times worth it. Then they will come more frequently. Just stick with it. Join a corp looking to help people like Learning Coalition, Dust University. Any suggestions would be much appreciated and I will try them out. Dropsuit Upgrades tab will be wonderful for you. Core skills to help improve your fittings, Hacking skills to help speed your hacks, mobility skills to get you around the field, armor and shield skills to improve your eHP and passive scan skills... but those are all SP related gains so why am I bringing them up?
The reason I mention those aspects is two fold. 1. Because you'll gain a lot out of putting your SP there rather than trying to go toe to toe with the vets right out of the gate. 2. Because they all fill aspects and roles you can use even before you have the SP.
Running a militia scout with militia sensor mods, mobility mods and a militia uplink won't get you very far slugging it out, but it will give you a viable role to fill on the field and earn you WP which of course translates to faster character development through more ISK and SP.
As a new or low SP character avoid heads up fights or direct confrontation. If you're going to fight do it because you have the advantage in numbers, positioning etc. or simply have no choice. But most often just avoid it and hack, deploy links, use an injector or a repper. Regardless of what suit you're in (aside from the Heavy frame) be a sort of Logi-Scout combo and provide things to your team without entering the hotzone.
Even running a low caliber AV fit and applying some extra fire to hostile vehicles can be of use to suppress them or give that little be extra needed to finish them off or confused their counter attack and it'll earn you some WP for doing damage as well.
One huge thing I've learned with my zero SP alts is that to be successful in a world of PC wrought proto gear I have to either stick with large numbers of my teammates OR avoid my team altogether and try to go stealth to evade combat.
Finally, squad up if you can it'll help you learn faster in a hands on way and it'll ensure you're coordinating with other members of your team and directly providing the support they're after even if you're SP total is low.
I hope that's helpful and feel free to contact me in game if you have any specific questions arise.
Cheers, Cross

There are 2 types of support suits: Your logis are more of your front-line guys, and your traditional healer/ammo guy, along with less reliable (but faster, but that's not your concern) spawns. WP gain is usually higher, but you're in more danger
Scouts can be used for support as well as combat. They can sneak around dropping safer uplinks (places you usually couldn't be bothered with reaching or running to as a logi) as well as being mobile enough to capture any objectives that aren't well guarded.

Thanks for all of the helpful and useful tips guys. I decided to go with an Amaar Logistic suit with uplinks (still deciding on my second equipment slot). Sticking in groups usually more toward the back I have been able to get a lot of kill assists and the occasional lucky kill! Also, I was accepted into DUST University. Eventually I will fully spec into this suit and the equipment gears since it is fun and will surly keep me occupied while getting more experienced at this game.

0. Dont play Ambush. 1. Try to set up Uplinks on elevated / secure places near Objectives. 2. Play as a militia Sniper a while. Not for making easy kills, but for watching and learning. You'll learn where the hot-spots are, how guys run around and where they hide and resupply. 3. Dont run into the fray. Never initiate an assault. Stay behind the vets and assist their kills / Do your RezNRep. You have to find a vet group to stay with. Then hope they dont get wiped. 4. Check your surroundings. If you feel the slightest unsecurity, retreat (youve gotta be that scared bunny). Never hack alone (if you want to, be prepared to die. If you still want to do it, do it. congrats youre badass )
If youre going in, take into account that you will definitely die. The question is just what you can make of the time youre in the hot spot. Can you make a difference? If not, dont run in and go find a place where you can.
