Respec to commando heavy suits.
Create a commando fit with swarms/smg (or favorite side arm) suit. Get sidearm kills with commando for events and shoot tanks for WP based on CCP adding WP for damage back in.
End up with an extra 750,000 sp to play with after the event which you could use however you like.
You may not even need to spec into commando if we get militia varients.
So long as you are having fun, i don't see a problem. |

Im aint afraid of those proto try hards. I'll find ways to execute them one by one. Just like Obi Wan said There other alternatives to fighting.
If you run proto gear, prepare to suffer the consequences. You've been warned.

Lol you say that like hit detection in DUST works?
You shoot a chest you get a headshot... you shoot a head you get a chest shot.. You shoot a wall where they ran you get a headshot... Unless the target is close to stationary its extremely inconsistent to count on that... And if the target is close to stationary as long as it doesn't blue shield then who could miss? Edit*(You can really notice this using the Sniper rifle through DUST's progression)
Plug in a DS3 and shoot with reduced recoil on a gamepad even with AA off.. And it auto hits head on the second press of the trigger... With 50% less input needed then moving for a headshot in GTA 5's auto aim environment...And that's a real auto aim... so...........
Spray and then pray... is DUST 514...(Semi-auto excluded) even with the most recoil intensive gun... There is less recoil in DUST 514 then almost any other competing First person shooter on the market... so for anyone coming from Counter-strike for example, wouldn't have much of an issue? even keeping a full spray rail rifle in the headshot area.... whether it actually hits a head is anyone's guess with DUST 514 these days...unless of course they are near stationary..
Most people ADS when they should... the mere assumption that all of DUST is hip firing right now... is interesting. |

The main problem with the vets is that the distance between them and you is getting bigger by the day. But once you get to 15mio SP you should be able to make reasonable WP and, if you play smart, you can score on top too. The one thing we all will have to cope with is: vets are gonna be more and more powerful compared to the rest of us. Were gonna see average kills of top 5 players hit the 50 Kill mark and above 5000 WP more frequently (just my guess).
What the rest of us is gonna have left:
1: Support these players in our own team. Say with uplink / nanohive infra-structure (its gonna make you solid WPs) 2: Ninja hacks. Disrupting the other teams game, possibly splitting them up. 3: Sniping duty. With less damage ... well you can try at least. It may get boring... 4: Provide support fire from the 2nd row. That being you can position yourself so that the enemy doesnt easily flank you. 5: Provide transport for your team. Get into dropships and get uplinks to the high ground. Be ready to get blown up easily though... 6: Militia tanker. Be aware that you are gonna get burned by the better tankers, exactly like you would lose to proto infantry. If youre lucky and there is no tank-opposition (more seldom by the day) you gonna score big. 7: Being a meat-shield. Helping the vets on your team by providing a bullet sink for the enemy (should he not kill you with his first 3 shots to the head). Maybe another blue can even kill him while he reloads. Take care not to pay too much ISK on your suits! An additional negative is, if you die too often, you help the enemy by depleting your teams clone reserves.
Option 7 is not for me. Too frustrating. And those WPs are a gift for the enemy, so thats no great option.
So I guess, Yeah, like many said, hide. Go into stealth mode and stay there. Even if youre not cloaked. Try being a non-entity. If you see opposition RUN, till youre not followed anymore. Linger around in the periphery and watch your back. Dont get involved too much. Be extremely cautious. Maybe you can even snatch a kill if youre lucky. But keep in mind: Never assault alone (you gonna die).
I am mostly a solo player and the logi (support) and scout (sneak and hide) roles are pretty viable. Or were until now at least.
In case of proto / tank stomping: DO NOT PANIC. Get that forge gun and hold out at your redline till the match is over to keep them looking at you and make some damage, or be that guy that runs around the whole map to hack the furthest objective. No quitting. Its a question of honor. |

Honestly don't be afraid, rejoice in the fact that you will have higher TTK overall. Squad up with good players and vets so they can help carry you and you will be fine. I predict a better player experience with new players (this all goes to **** if tanks are involved, so keep that in mind)

Don't get me wrong old chap - I'm still going into battle. But what I need right now are some tactics that give me a fighting chance. I should add that in general terms I'm a very average fpser - so obviously that compounds my sh*tness at DUST.

But seriously tanks are gonna be harder to kill for any AVer that hasn't invested in REs. As for the proto...well yea, there's gonna be more than usual but give it time and it should cool down as the PC changes should keep them preoccupied with actually defending there district (hopefully). Protos that aren't apart of PC will run out of ISK and be forced back down to MLT gear (cuz they too damn stupid to use ADV).

stupid question alert - I can't make out the improvements in RE's from the stats in the game. I'm assuming they just get more powerful but should I be skilling this up to the max? I have saved up 1m SP is it that important?

I am really ******* irritated pleased to report that these TTK changes will actually benefit us protostomping vets more than the newbies.
Now I really can turn around and gun them down, even if they flank me.

I've been playing since June, and I am in your situation as well.
Average FPS player, around 10 M SP put into skills, etc.
I've been getting better, albeit slowly, and here are my general tips:
1) Equipment: Drop Uplink, if you can find a good place to put this, you can get a large number of easy points. (25 a pop) from squads spawning in. Try to put them at places where you want to spawn in, and don't be afraid of putting them away from everyone else.
2) Flank. Always Flank. Assume every enemy is going to beat you in a straight up fight. So to combat this, make sure you are never in a straight up fight. Move around the map, hit them from behind. Take cover and mow them down as they try to cross some open space, take an unusual angle, unexpected high grounds, etc.
If your enemy isn't expecting you to be somewhere, that's the best place to kill them from.
3) Sound. I would argue that DUST has an amazing sound design. You can use it to tell what's being fired, from what direction, and often times how many. Learn what each weapon sounds like, and combine that with knowing those weapons. Run from weapons in their best performance area, and hit them when you are in your weapons best range.
4) use ADV / STD gear. ADV gear is better than many players give it credit for, especially after the upcoming nerf to damage mods. You aren't losing much, but you cost alot less. As average players the few % advantage is not going to matter nearly as much for us. Instead, use the lower costing gear to allow yourself to be more bold. Sometimes rushing in with guns blazing is exactly the best way to catch an enemy off guard. If you can trade a clone with somebody in prototype then you've won the ISK war. Also it requires less SP, which brings me to point 5.
5) Expand the Toolkit. You don't have to be lvl 5 in everything before you go into a new role. Have a few low-sp investment side roles that you can easily switch into. A sneaky shotgun scout, a HMG heavy, A repping std logi suit.
These roles allow you to try out new things, often saving ISK per death over your main suits. It also helps keep the game fresh, as well as one other critical advantage: Flexibility. You have to understand that every weapon and suit has a role, and sometimes you'll be caught in situations where your chosen specialty is just going to fail. So if you have a tool kit full of other (STD) options you can change it to something that can take advantage of things. |

Great - particularly interested in applying what you've said about sound design and expanding the toolkit. Already worked out that complex gear just seems to cost me too much isk and it isn't efficient with my limited skills at the moment. Pace seems more important to an assault class than extra armour. Have also dabbled in expansion to a small degree - running shields and cardio regs and RE's. The relative weakness and featherweight light weapon are more than made up for when you blow 2 heavies sky high and make an objective reachable for your team. All at a bargain price. Have tried sniping - failed. Have tried tanking - failed. Scout class is my next big thing - I think it suits my style and staying out of trouble is probably a better tactic than engaging in one on ones. Good to see there are others out there in the same place as me and nailing down tactics to make DUST work for them. Will be using your notes to up my game in 1.8
