Looking at the SDE the mFireMode0.effectiveRange = 11,000.0 and the mFireMode0.absoluteRange = 25,000.0 for the wpn_laserrifle_am_std.
Does anyone know what units they're in?

pretty sure that translates to 110m and 250m. So it puts them at a little bit longer range than the RR.

Probably 100 meters, 200 meter seems abit much, unless they plan on making it really long range. I believe it's 90 meters in 1.7

If i'm reading the SDE correctly then the base damage is different for each tier now (17, 17.85, 18.7)
Thanks CCP for making the HMG Heavy viable again :3

So, the million-dollar question is, will this be enough range to get the job done. I would have liked the effective to be more like 120-130ish personally. I'm willing to wait-and-see though.

Agreed. I would have liked 120m as well. But, depending on how fast it drops off to 250, things could get verrrrry interesting.....

If a LR is sitting at 100-110m going 1v1 against a RR, then the LR should win 99% of the time, if it can't then it needs more range until it can. For me that's the litmus test for LR viability. It has a TON of drawbacks (which I'm totally fine with) that make it difficult/situational to use, it needs to be dominant in some aspect to make up for this or you will always be better off choosing something more versatile.
As for the optimal range, I didn't find anything. My SQL-fu isn't that great , so maybe it's hidden in another table somewhere that I didn't find/notice. In all likelihood that stuff is hard-coded into the game because that weapon has such unique behavior that creating attributes (rows in the database) that would be blank for every-other weapon would be pretty wasteful.
I don't want a close-range buff to be honest. I like it having a long range niche that keeps it from being OP or the FOTM.
@John Demonsbane: As for the drop off to absolute range, I'm sure it's rather abrupt (like it is now when something gets out of your effective range), unless they made an exception for this weapon we haven't heard about. As a reference, the RR has the same absolute range.

I have been trying to keep my eye in with the LR but sometimes the scr was just more useful at the time in matches. Its gonna take a little while to get my old mojo back with it but I'm confident I'll be back to my old ways in no time. |

I too am looking forward to using this weapon again, other than the coolness of it being a laser though theres been no good reason to use it this build, getting out ranged and out dps'd by rail guns totally turned me off using it. |

Yeah, 1.7 has been almost LR free for me too. Pulled it out at most once a week maybe just for the heck of it but too frustrating with the RR spam. Just started using it a bit more now so I'll be ready to go once 1.8 hits.

So the effective range seems to have been bumped from 90 to 110m.
No idea if it's even possible to figure out the range profile from the SDE.
Absolute range doesn't tell you much, most weapons seem to have 250m. Besides, LR damage takes a sharp dive past its effective range, compared to, say, all the rifles. |

The cloak should allow you to engage in CQC much more easily now though. It should be interesting to see how it all plays out.
