So I just got over a pretty nasty 2 week long respiratory infection this weekend, and I won't bore you with the details but basically it got a bit scary for a few days and I decided it was finally time to take a serious shot at putting down cigarettes after 15 years of smoking.
I've done good so far. It's been 10 days since I made the descision to quit, and i've only had 4 cigarettes, down from at least a pack a day. I was wondering if there were any successfull quitters on these forums that could offer some tips/advice.
My worst cravings are after a few bad matches on Dust, lol
*after bad matches*
Me- God f*cking dammit!!! Thats f*cking bull sh*t!!! Did you see that sh*t???!!! RestlessSpirits- Yea, we saw it, its all good Dunk, just chill out. Me- Oh my god that f*cking pisses me the f*ck off. I need a f*cking cigarette!!!! RestlessSpirits- No, Dunk, you don't need a cigarette. Me- Yea, I f*cking do!! RestlessSpirits- No you don't. Me- AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!
Anyway, some craving and frustration control tips would be welcome. Gum doesn't come even close to working, and my once loved cups of coffee just aren't the same anymore.

I say go e-cigarette as well. It has its own risks, mostly because of the nicotine vapor, but that horrible cough my mother was getting in the morning went away with it. Biggest thing is that you can moderate how much you use it. Take two puffs, feel better, let it sit in your pocket. It isn't nearly as ritualistic as a regular cigarette. Good luck mate.

Haven't smoked in a long enough period of time to not remember how long it's been. Did the gum. About to quit the gum. It's terrible, tastes like pepper...so easy to quit. Tried the e-cig route but it was the masturbatorial of smoking. Did chantix a long time ago...had nightmares about drowning in blood and murder. Woke up screaming all vietnam vet style every morning. Decided I'd rather smoke.
We can pickle that.

Thanks everyone. I may check out those e-cigs, though i'm worried I don't have the will power to not turn those into a habit. I am somewhat amazed at the amount of taste i'm starting to get back. Hoping to smoke a pork shoulder soon to take full advantage.
I don't ever want to be one of those ex-smokers whos always trying to push non smoking on everyone, and I don't think I ever will be, but I take a nice deep breath now and jesus................I can breathe.
Hope I can keep it going.

My 6 year old has been after me to quit smoking cigarettes since he was 4, I tried and tried and tried and failed repeatedly (which annoys me to no end because I quit cold turkey before I was a parent).
Just last week I was given an e-cig by my wife and I haven't smoked a cigarette since. Yes, I know I am still feeding my nicotine addiction, though I am not coughing as much as I was and I feel better too.

You don't have to do these things but I found them key to my own story of quitting.
Invest in yourself
Putting a few hundred SP into teeth whitening lv 5 will make you think twice about staining them with cigs or coffee. Do it.
See your doc and get some biotics to help you curb the urges.
Use the patch if you need to but don't smoke e-cigs. Going through the motions of smoking won't help you quit as efficiently. Stop smoking and stop doing things that emulate smoking.
I quit successfully that way.
Your body will f with you, you'll think you need to be somewhere or forgot to do something. When you feel that way recognize it is an urge and deny it no matter what. It will pass in a few minutes and if you have the patch you will find it is less of an urge and you can even be around cigs without breaking your streak.
In six weeks it will hurt to inhale smoke, but don't try it. I learned bc had a cigar for a very important event.
Good luck.

Don't think about it.
Go out, have a walk, just keep your mind and body busy. Do some exercises, you don't want to smoke when you do some exercises. If you're married, tell your wife to hide / destroy all your packets everytime she sees one. Don't think about it, you don't need it at all. Don't smoke e-cigarettes, you risk to be addicted. It's more a psychological matter: you want to smoke because you're used to!
If you don't smoke, nothing happens, if you smoke, well, you already know... I didn't quit smoking, but I'm doing my best trying not to see it as a sacrifice, but one of the best thing I could ever do.
Good Luck on that. o/

There's several ways to stop quitting from cold turkey to e-sigs to drops to the patch.
There's a few things that can help motivate you and you need to use it, whether it be carrying a photo of a love one or maybe a message from a loved one for moral support. Consulting a doctor is also recommended for heavy smokers, its best to ween off than cold turkey ,
Tend to stay away from drinking and bars or smoking locations for a while, it might encourage you to smoke.
In most cases it good to replace one addiction with another, mainly physical activity. Don't excessively do it but its a great tool to use and it can be a factor if you chose to go that route.
Good luck |

My man, you have come to the right place. If there is one thing that this game can help you with it is quitting smoking.
Now, let me introduce you to alcoholism. It is a much healthier solution.
This game will drive you to drink. If you do it right it can make the game quite tolerable.
Might I suggest a fine single malt scotch. Lagavulin or Auchentoshan is the best in my opinion.

I had to go on zyban... If i don't have something to take the edge off, it feels like my skin is crawling. I'm 2 months in, and 5 weeks completely smoke-free. I don't have the urge to smoke anymore, but it seems to have been replaced with an irrational fear of missing a pill, and a powerful and constant craving for sugar. I'm also starting to get just a bit chubby, despite the fact that i walk friggin everywhere. Sigh. I would already be quit by now if last time i tried the universe hadn't chose that exact moment to turn my life into a monumental cluster-f*ck.
But anyhow; willpower, plus an easy and dependable crutch, and stay away from overly stressful situations until you learn a new coping mechanism. Sounds easy, really bloody isn't unfortunately.
Good luck!

Anyway, some craving and frustration control tips would be welcome. Gum doesn't come even close to working, and my once loved cups of coffee just aren't the same anymore. Respect bro. Last time I quit I started to roll my own using pipe tobacco for a while first. Pipe tobacco is a lot lighter on nicotine and additives than most cigarettes, plus it's a lot cheaper to roll pipe tobacco than it is to buy cigarettes. And pipe tobacco is cheaper than cigarette tobacco.
Rolling your own makes you have to work for each cigarette, therefore making you have to make a conscious and physical effort to smoke. It helps you make the decision not to smoke by making you spend 45-120 seconds actually making one before you can light up. (if you've never rolled a cigarette with a hand roller before, it'll take you 4-5 minutes with the instructions that come with it to figure it out)
A 6 oz. bag of "OHM" (decent low price pipe tobacco) makes about a carton to a carton and a half worth and cost's $7.25 or you can get a small bag that makes about a pack's worth for $1.25ish 100 "ROLLIT" cigarette papers is $1.19 200 "TOP" cigarette filters are A hand roller costs about $2-$4 depending on brand. My Zippo one cost me 3.49, my Top one was $2.19 but they are made out of different materials and have different levels of durability. A zippo one tends to last a lot longer.
I started smoking again, but I stuck with rolling my own since it at least keeps me down to about 3 packs a week.

As has been stated by others e-cigs are the way to go. They are cheap compared to smoking, better for you (maybe) and you can smoke them anywhere (here in UK anyway). Take a couple drags to take the edge off and put it down.
I also find that keeping my hands busy helps with cravings, your mind associates nicotine with something in your hands. Play with a rubber band, twirl a pen, anything really. |

Even better is to start smoking a hookah. No, not drugs. You smoke sheesha tobacco in a hookah. Since you have to prepare it and can't take it with you you can form a new habit that involves smoking but just not chain smoking all the while with a better moment of enjoyment. Or at least start smoking a pipe. Learn to savor the moment once or twice a day and make it a good habit that can be ror the enjoyment.
Smoking a fine tobacco product once a day or less is not bad and is not the problem. Chain smoking cheap cigarettes all the time is the problem.

Keep it coming everyone, i've started getting on this thread when I want a smoke bad. I don't know why but last night and today have been the worst. My mind keeps trying to rationalize buying some cigarettes. I think "i'll just buy a pack, give it to my boss or a friend, and i'll just get one when the cravings get bad". Lol, that would work for about a minute I think, and the pack would be gone in a half a day. Had to force myself to leave my money at home today cause I know I would have given in otherwise.

Good luck. I've been smoking for 25 years. I haven't really wanted to smoke for the majority of that time. In my line of work (restaurants, growing dope) it's damn near impossible to not smoke. But at my age, every time I feel something in my chest or have an inflammation in my throat, I have that "what if it's cancerous?" thought. I recently found out that my oldest kid has been smoking for a while and as a reluctant smoker, it's disappointing to say the least.
I'll probably quit again, another 15-35 times before they finally kill me. **** it. They may take 20 years off of your life, but they're the last 20 years, when you're just a burden on everybody anyways.

This is one of the hardest and most important decisions you will ever make. One of the interventional cardiologists I used to work with would stop in the middle of a coronary angiogram and in his best Indian accent yell, "sir, I found a cigarette butt in your coronary artery. Stop smoking or you will die!" Makes me laugh to this day.
The said reality is it is true, nicotine hardens and scars your arteries, everywhere.
I quit 10 years ago cold turkey and never looked back. I still get cravings but I am strong and know that you will need to be as well.

I'm in the process of quitting too. Just did my week smoking while starting chantix. No side effects from the pills but it hasn't completely curbed my cravings either. I'm gradually cutting back...it sucks. Between tanks, heavies, and no smokes I think I am going to take a Dust break myself. I may try the e-cigarette too, I don't like the things but it may help a little. I also tend to eat a lot of Jolly Ranchers and smoke more weed when I try to quit cigarettes. Those both help a little, except that after a bowl I really want a cigarette

congratulations on quitting smoking the cigarettes, I smoked at least a pack a day for 16 years and quit 5 years ago last month. It was not easy to quit but I stuck with it, I did treat my self with mini-eclairs for the first couple of weeks. best advice is to "just do it", I lost my father to C.O.P.D. and watching him die from cigarettes was harder than quitting cigarettes. " Why don't you have the restless spirits take a portion of that 10% corporate tax and fund a quit smoking program" (joking since I quit the corp over the taxes)

^^ This. Currently my mother is in the final stages of acute obstructive pulmonary disorder, fluctuating between 27 and 32% adult lung capacity. It isn't pretty, it's scary as hell, and the worst part is it had a genetic cause for her that was triggered by smoking: It would have never effected her had she never started. Knowing that, and knowing my daughter has been diagnosed with the same genetic disorder, makes it easier for me to quit. If she never starts, she will never have to live through that.
Actually, that brings up a good point: Alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency. If you have a family history of emphysema, or other lung disorders, or tend to get lung infections easily, get tested. That **** scares me more than cancer.....

Went out drinking with friends this past sunday. Got shitfaced and didn't think about smoking once. The trip I had out to the bars before that didn't go so well. I felt what could only be described as anxiety because I wanted to smoke so bad. This time was easy though.
I'm chewing mostly regular gum now. My sense of smell is getting annoying though. I realized Asheville (a popular city near my town) smells mostly like sewage. Food tastes better. I also realized because of my smoking I was probably over salting almost everything I cooked, which is pretty unhealthy in and of itself.
I'll hit up a piece of nicotine gum when I'm feeling more *******'ish than usual...or before PC battles.
Keep it up. It's only as hard as starting flossing.
We can pickle that.

Dunk Mujunk wrote:So I just got over a pretty nasty 2 week long respiratory infection this weekend, and I won't bore you with the details but basically it got a bit scary for a few days and I decided it was finally time to take a serious shot at putting down cigarettes after 15 years of smoking.
Going out for a smoke after a bad match is a good trigger to identify. The smoke is not what helps you relax/vent from the match (it's actually a stimulant so it won't help you actually calm down) What probably is helping is actually walking away for 5 minutes and reassessing the situation. Bad match, replace the smoke with something else for 5 minutes, the trigger will fade in a bit of time (varies for different people) Pace around the house, make a sandwich, draw a cartoonGǪ whatever works for you. That may help

So I was pretty amped today, wanted a cig pretty bad when I got up but managed to leave my money at the house to avoid any rash descisions, got through the morning pretty good (I work outside so i'm used to having a smoke whenever I want). Then I get a call from the guy i'm having do my taxes, turns out a tax return has already been submited with my social lol. Someone got ahold of my social security number. I got some other stuff going on and that was just icing on the cake. Borrowed 10 bucks from my boss and I now have a pack of Marlboros in my pocket.
Pisses me off cause once I got home from work and relaxed the situation isn't that bad. My identity wasn't stolen (as far as I know) just that someone used my social on their tax paperwork. Feel real sh*tty cause I made such a big deal about quitting here on the forums. I guess on the positive side I got Marlboros, not the unfiltered roll your own Bugler I normally buy. Remembering now why I never switched back from Bugler to Reds (tastes like sh*t).
Trying not to be to rough on myself but damn, last night i was at 4 cigs in 10 days, and i've had 4 already today. I am really perplexed that the craving was so strong so far in, figured it would be worse in the begining. Is that normal?
Anyway, i'm trying not to let it get to me too much, trying to look at it as a speed bump rather than a failure, but i'm not pleased with myself. I'm trying to feed off the stories and insperation you guys have put up here in this thread, gonna do some e-cig window shopping this weekend, I may not have the will power for cold turkey.
Also i'm gonna start jogging this weekend. Was gonna wait till I was free and clear of cigs to start on some cardio stuff, but if I don't force myself to get going now I may never do it. Also have some sweet sweet chiba ready for me on friday. I can smoke bud inside, but not cigs. Figure i'll get nice and cozy with a qwapper and some video games, gonna try and get too lazy to walk outside lol.

You need to replace one habit with another. Everybody has a habit. Sometimes it can be a hobby. The drinking thing above wasn't entirely a joke. Take up craft beer drinking. Get some good craft brews and drink that rather than the cigarettes. Learn quality, not quantity with an addiction.

That idea of doing cardio was a good one Dunk. Go hard enough and you will release endorphins, which is pretty much what every addictive drug rewards you with anyway. Now that i think about it, i remember a friend using a punching bag as a replacement stress releaver.

dont be hard on your self, I tried to quit many times, many many times. Finally I switched to a all natural cigarette, the light blue American spirits till I got used to them (im sure an E-cig would be just as well), then I set a date a month out and started cutting back and when the date came I stuck with it and after 16+ years I quit and im not going back. Cravings can be horrible the first couple weeks and even the first couple months but you will always have to deal with stress and after I quit I realized I made up reasons to stress just to justify having another cig and now I stress much less, it gets easier just snack, or exercise, or drink some water every time you have a craving. dont give up

I read the results of a published study a while ago and if you really feel you need a cigarette take the whole one - the people who smoked halfies tended to inhale more and hold onto them longer than they would have with a normal cigarette.

I quit! Dedicated smoker from 18 to 30.
Crossed paths with a guy in his early 40s immobilized by lung cancer. Bright guy (engineer). Pretty wife. Young kids. The experience f*cked with me.
Quit cold turkey sometime back in November.
The first month is tough. Downhill from there. I steer clear of bars though. Still too tempting. |

Sorry i havnt been able to quit so cant really help you there.
My main problem is i REALLY DONT WANT TO QUIT.
BUT, without wanting to quit i slowly been reducing my amount of cigarettes a LOT.
the 2 things i did that truly worked for me: GÖª I run 25+mins every day, 2 to 3 times a day. GÖª Smoke W33d. ( i got this as a medicinal treatment for my insomnia)
And without noticing it ive reduced the amount of cigs a day from 2 packs to 10-8....Without even wanting to. Its just, the need seems to vanish...

Find something that works for you and do it. If you are loving the taste of food again, get into cooking. If you love the extra enefgy you have, find a good way to burn it (i got into running after smoking, finishing my first half marathon was better than any smoke i ever had). If you slip/break qnd have a smoke, don't feel too bad, just don't give up either. Everybody falls, the important part is getting back up. It's ok to be gumpy & mean, you can always appologize once your past it.
Save some $ that you would have spent on smokes and treat yourself to something big in a year. I couldn't believe the money saved and had the bender of a lifetime in Reno! (hot august nights, only reason to go to Reno)

I switched over to Vaping I have not had a cig in 6 months. It's not as good as fully quitting as your still putting nicotine in your body but it is better. I was amazed at how easily I switched over and the fact that I rarely crave a cig now. It was almost painless.
Anyways, best of luck to you. A lot of us former smokers are pulling for you. |
