I had to go on zyban... If i don't have something to take the edge off, it feels like my skin is crawling. I'm 2 months in, and 5 weeks completely smoke-free. I don't have the urge to smoke anymore, but it seems to have been replaced with an irrational fear of missing a pill, and a powerful and constant craving for sugar. I'm also starting to get just a bit chubby, despite the fact that i walk friggin everywhere. Sigh. I would already be quit by now if last time i tried the universe hadn't chose that exact moment to turn my life into a monumental cluster-f*ck.
But anyhow; willpower, plus an easy and dependable crutch, and stay away from overly stressful situations until you learn a new coping mechanism. Sounds easy, really bloody isn't unfortunately.
Good luck!

^^ This. Currently my mother is in the final stages of acute obstructive pulmonary disorder, fluctuating between 27 and 32% adult lung capacity. It isn't pretty, it's scary as hell, and the worst part is it had a genetic cause for her that was triggered by smoking: It would have never effected her had she never started. Knowing that, and knowing my daughter has been diagnosed with the same genetic disorder, makes it easier for me to quit. If she never starts, she will never have to live through that.
Actually, that brings up a good point: Alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency. If you have a family history of emphysema, or other lung disorders, or tend to get lung infections easily, get tested. That **** scares me more than cancer.....

That idea of doing cardio was a good one Dunk. Go hard enough and you will release endorphins, which is pretty much what every addictive drug rewards you with anyway. Now that i think about it, i remember a friend using a punching bag as a replacement stress releaver.
