Tactical awareness in the form of scanning info will be EXTREMELY important in 1.8. Below is an ordered list of scan profiles and precisions of various dropsuit fits and scanners.
Instructions: Start at the top of the list to see which suit or scanner you are trying to use to detect targets. Everything below your item you will be able to see. Everything above it you will be blind to. (S) means you have lvl 5 in relevant skills, (U) means you are unskilled in relevant skills. I will eventually have a link to this and further range based info.

Caldari scout with 4 PRO precision mods won't be able to scan a Gallente Scout with 2 PRO Damps and more useful low-slot mods to choose from?
I wonder if they are going to change the stats of these modules too? |

Just now figured out how to read this list. Great info.
I will add that dampening/precision numbers seem to round to the nearest whole number, so if they round to the same number, precision wins and you are scanned or successfully scan your target. |

That's interesting info if its true. Because it would actually mean that the gal logi PRO scanner could see a 4x damp scout among other things. |

In 1.7, having a scan profile of 27.58 dB allows you to be scanned by proto scanners. I've also been able to detect single complex dampened mediums (33.75dB) despite my precision being higher (34.43 dB). I can only assume that the round rules will hold true in 1.8.
Still, I can't foresee a scenario where the focused scanner becomes problematic. It's rare to ever see one in 1.7 (though I think Samuel Carp uses one to troll scouts) and it's a crappy scanner even in 1.7 due to its long cooldown and short light up time. It'll be even worse in 1.8 when spin scans are removed. |

Ok, question time. How exactly does the Margin of Error calculate?
If I try to scan a proto gallente scout using dampeners with my crappy standard active scanner, should I get the "Some Margin of Error" message? Is it a simple over/under deal (rounded whole numbers, apparently) or is it possible to be so well damped that a low level scanner would completely miss the mark and return "No Margin of Error?"
I swear I've gotten "no margin of error" only to have a scout come around a corner and blast me. |

oh and +1
I'm not going to do any extra to include cloaking. Just move yourself up to your specific suit with 1 extra damp and it's the same dB. I didn't put medium or heavy suits with cloak, but again it's the same as having a damp or with cloak and damp it's the same as 2 damps. |

While I'm sure that we'll see an increase in the numbers of players stacking scanners, they still won't be nearly as effective as the spin scans.
If you think about it, in 1.7 one logi with a single scanner can spin scan 360* every 15 seconds or so, and their light up data will be constant.
In 1.8, to cover the same area you'd need six players with two scanners each, coordinating their scans in both direction and timing, to perfection.
So in 1.8, a player with a single scanner might be 1/12th as effective as that same player in 1.7. That means to get the most out of scanning, you'd better know that there are players in your scanning cone that are going to get lit up, before you light them up. Misfire scans will be very debilitating.

Kinda but that assumes you are always under attack from all directions. People will just figure out where to scan camp and be fairly safe. If nobody can get behind where you are to effectively attack you can cut Dow what needs to be scanned by 50-75% |

You either need to have a build that is impossible to scan, or you need a build that is impossible to evade. CCP made a choice to have the highest level of stealth trump the highest level of scan.
Remember too, that just because the Gallente is well hidden doesn't mean he is well informed. The Gal scout actually has pretty poor scanning. Gal scouts can't see other any scouts at all. Cal, Min, and Am will all be hidden from the Gal scout just like the Gal scout is hidden from them. Then it becomes a true stealth dance, where you need to find the enemy scout without being spotted yourself.
Caldari scout is actually already pretty powerful on the flip side. They are the only suit in the game that can naturally see any of the other scout suits. With a few mods, no Minmatar or Amarr scout will be able to hide from them. Caldari scouts will be able to seek and destroy other scout suits with ease. The only counter is (a) another Caldari such that they both see each other or (b) a Gallente who remains invisible.
But the Cal versus Gal scout doesn't automatically go to the Gal. Remember, he is basically blind and can't scan the Caldari either. So we are back to a stealth showdown, where only the sneakiest bastard wins. |

Its unacceptable for a game like Dust 514, that advocates such playstyle diversity, to allow medium frames to be unable to dampen to scans while sacrificing so much.

What are you talking about? Are you saying assault suits should be able to be dampened to everything? What would the point of a lot of scouts be then? One PRO damp can make max skilled assault suits invisible to all but Gal ADV and better, or PRO scanners, or scout scanners.
One of the keys to 'assaulting' in 1.8 to at least avoid scans is not attack from the logical scanning direction. Yes there will be the occaisional signal-logi, stacking scanners, and there will be the paper scout with lots of range, but little HP, but both of those should be somewhat manageable to deal with.
The damp assault may not be the most niche for damps, but I don't think it should be, nor do I think it is useless. |
