What assets, if any Will be able to transfer to PS4 (And the next Unreal Engine) and why?

That's not the question. Its a good question. If Dust514 is ported to PS4 will players be able to transfer their characters over to PS4 or will a potential need to change Unreal a engine for a better engine will be required later and all of our time spent will be lost.
He is asking are we going to be able to transfer or be forced to start over. I doubt CCP will make anyone start over. Data will be stored prob via a cloud and when Dust PS4 is out your stats, gear etc will be available.. So no losses.

no, they will have to recode everything unless the ps3 games on ps4 work.

First off, the engine is Unreal. This game could be ported to the PC, PS4 the Xbox or XBoxOne today if CCP wanted too without losing any assets. They might have to rework some code that they've written to get around PS3 issues, but other than that it would be a direct port.
As to whether or not they will, well that's up to them, and they aren't saying.

I'm not a stupid person, I know what he's asking. So basically, is Dust 514 coming to PS4. Because the answer is pretty obvious that one can figure it out on their own.
Dust character data is linked to your account. When you switch over and if Dust was on PS4, you're info would be transferred. Simple. Making all players start over from ground zero with a new character would create a PR disaster.
So basically its a "Is Dust coming to PS4" thread disguised as a concerned question about your Dust character account.

If this is the question then yes. An eventual port to ps4 would mean nothing to your character assets because they're linked to your PSN ID and stored on Tranquillity, and you can keep your PSN ID on PS4 too, so basically there should be no problem.
If the question were in the other sense then they would need to re-code and essentially re-build Dust. Don't know if UE4 allows you to import from UE3, but still they'll need to code a lot of things

Isn't Unreal Engine "easy" to port?
If so, going from UE3 to UE4 (assuming they stick with it) should be relatively easy and they SHOULD be able to keep current assets with the ability of improving them along with adding more to their database.
Unreal is good and all, but not really suited for Dust.
I would suggest building their own engine for PS4 slowly gathering their resources to maximize what they can do for what they have available and what they want to give out.
If course, this is a major risk since it is time consuming and I assume the player base won't want to wait. We never do. |

The correct answer to all of this is: None of your character data is stored on the PS3. Everything is stored on the Singularity server with EVE. Change of engine is irrelevant, as typeID's willpretty much auto associate with the corresponding items in your inventory/market.

They already have their own engine, and the original DUST was built in it. Its called Carbon. Eve's merc quarters and character creation uses this engine.

Is there any indication that they've continued development and optimization of the carbon engine.
And made it able to take their old assets now if they move to it?
As I understand when they went from carbon to unreal they basically had to throw all the models away. |

Due to the vastly different architectures of the PS3 and PS4, none of the stuff they are building now can simply transfer over to the PS4. However the bulk of the time spent in development is actually designing and making decisions and whatnot. When Dust moves onto PS3 or PS4 all they have to do is take all the same art, design choices, numbers, and all that jazz and code it for the PS4 which relatively doesn't take that long.
In regards to characters, our characters are stored on Singularity not the PS3 so there is no need to worry that your characters or assets will be lost.

They could've at least tried to optimize it for the PlayStation 3, but choose to go with Unreal Engine 3.
The Dust team has changed over time and are slowly walking in the right direction. Who knows? They might even pull a modified Carbon back for the PS4 and not fry them.

I'd imagine that part of the reason everything is so slow to reach us is because they're attempting to develop assets for carbon on the ps4 a few years from now. We're doing the legwork for them in terms of balancing and numbers while they do the models and maps.

The ps3 can't handle Carbon. It just can't. You'd also be looking at a 12 gig game as opposed to a 3gig download.

I work in 3d modelling for film and games.
The migration to Unreal 4 would benefit the game. It would require an entirely new release most likely, but it would be worth it. Unreal 4 can be used to make ps3 games as well.
Models and assets are built in 3rd party software such as Zbrush, Maya, Modo and many others. The highly detailed renders you see on press art are the high poly models sculpted in Zbrush. From these models, they can be exported as different levels of quality with the click of a bottom, and retain identical information, allowing easy updating on models geometry.
The hard part of moving to Unreal 4 would be recoding the game, as it has many changes and additions for developers. All assets would still be usable, but need to be put into the new engine, complete with new animations and rigs.
Considering the potential though, they could develop in Unreal 4 on the ps3 making the eventual move to ps4 much easier.

This. I think the ps3 will be viable for a couple more years, but if dust is ever to become what was promised, it simply MUST be ported to more capable platforms.
The data is all stored on their servers which is already connected to TQ and everyone's PC. I'm not a programmer but I'd guess it's not too difficult to do.
Let's not get too caught up in years down the road. Let's just hope they don't f*ck 1.8 away.
Keys to instant success: 1. Infantry SP refund due to drastic changes.
2. A player market or at a minimum the ability to sell my sh*t to an NPC fence
3. PvE- can be as simple as VR training in my MQ that lets me shoot at moving targets. SOMETHING/ANYTHING that let's me bide my time and earn a little SP when I can't find a squad and don't feel like subjecting myself to pubs.
Boom. Instant 100% plus player base (temporarily). You still need more new content to keep people hooked (1.9 in no more than one month).
