Why is it ironic? Eve pays the bills.

Basically what they're currently introducing are the skins we already can buy in Dust for Aurum. And even in Eve you at least need Aurum to build them. So basically we had it first and now they introduce it to Eve too.

Huh, let me direct you at FFXIV where there are up to a hundred fully customized characters in different armor/costumes on screen at once.(could probably be more, but not that many people were playing.)
It's on PS3.
So, what's your excuse for CCP's incompetence now?

The PS3.
I don't play that game, but let me guess. It has tabbed targeting, not range mechanics whatsoever except on/off and no projectile mechanics either?
Sure, then, they can use some of the PS3's dismal capability for character customization, whereas Dust can't because it's already pushing the PS3 to it's limits.
Now, that's not saying that CCP Shanghai isn't incompetent, but that the bigger problem is the PS3. |

Is it ironic because the community has been wanting hello kitty rifters since 2005? Eve s been asking for paint longer than dust has been a thought.
Give it a year though, they'll nail it down and it'll be on dust.

The EVE method is not much different than what we have in DUST. Spend Aurum, get an item with a different typeID. The only difference there is they buy a blueprint and it changes the ship to the new paint scheme. Here we buy the item directly.

Agreed and understood. Near the bottom it does seem to elude to custom paint, if they can make the system light weight and not hardcore it in like it's current system.

It does seem an odd path. Support development of a different system by purchasing from a limited selection of Aurum based schemes today? The EVE crowd will probably rebel against it and the whole idea will be trashed. I'd consider it but none of the ships that I fly are supported and I've lost interest in EVE as well. I'm not sure how much longer I'll be subscribing considering I rarely fly.

Pushing it to it's limit? BULL****! You know as well as anyone that there are games with far larger maps and combat with fewer hiccups.(BF4 comes to mind) CCP just never optimized the unreal engine like every other developer that used it has done. Or they could have optimized the carbon engine. They seem to be totally against optimization of any sort, really.
FFXIV has: better character models, weather systems, more characters on screen(who look better and are far more difficult to render) huge zones, and it even has this mysterious thing called "fun" something that hasn't existed in Dust for quite some time. It uses tab targeting, PVP involves range mechanics(archers deal less damage out to their absolute range) line of sight calculations, and positional moves(you have to be behind someone, you have to be to their side, etc.) being handled on the same instancing servers as dungeons.
If you hear the words "WORTH IT!" look about, something hilarious just happened.

I think it's also partially/largely (not sure to what extent) to do with the Unreal engine, I mean that thing is used for iPhone apps so surely they can use a better one?

ooooh no, here we are again: "the PC", "THE PC"...
there is no "the PC" - and even if there could be a legitimate term like this, it could not refer to the power-houses on total Nerd's desks or in game-tester's hands - it could only refer to either unlimited upgrade-options in general (in which case the most examples where this term was used in gaming would become un-logical - so it could not have had this meaning yet) - oooor it could refer SOLEY to the average gamer-PC!
and just for your notice: the average gamer-PC is still such a piece of junk, that it still has not even surpassed the PS3 in power yet in all those years!
sooo - yes, the PS3 has major issues: as far as i remember, it's architecture is too specialised and it's RAM is far too tiny to compensate - so the operation-run-progresses are usually rather slow and un-smooth here as well as development-extends limited sooner - but do you honestly think that it would be to such an extent, that it could severely hinder an incorporating of a player-skin-change menu? people have been askign for new skins in eve for a helluva lot longer, even before dust was a twinkle in CCPs eyes it would be nice to get different colourings based ont he major corps and piract factions in eve, different arm/helmet badges as well as colours.
things like an Aliastra Gallente assault which could be white//orange or black/orange with the Aliastra logo replacing gal federation badge on the arm

Stop with the parsing - it shouldve been in both games a long time ago.
Its not space magic to make skins or paint-able layers.
Even Halo 2 had patches you could put on your MP character
Please remove "PS3" from your brain as the cancer causing all of CCP's problems. Much of the issues are to do with CCP's lack of experience, skill and possibly resources.
I'm sure some stuff could be subcontacted but only they can answer why some stuff which is there from the start in other games take years for them to implement.

I think it's also partially/largely (not sure to what extent) to do with the Unreal engine, I mean that thing is used for iPhone apps so surely they can use a better one? The engine CCP is using for dust is a customized version of the unreal engine. Also the unreal engine ports to many devices and media but is a pretty powerful engine many game developers both large an small use it or should I say have been using it to develop games for years now. Most of the last big AAA console hits have used it (the list is enormous at this point).
On the subject of the PS3 it may be outdated in comparison to the PS4 but as games have shown on it such as MAG, BF4 and many others you can have far more people, vehicles, environmental mechanics, etc., etc., in an fps and run on this machine so I would say dust isn't even close to the pinnacle of what they can push out of this game.
However I will say this all that depends on how well they can optimize the already customized engine along with current and future resources, otherwise the ceiling for this game will be reached. But hopefully by that time they will be talking about developing for the PS4 maybe with the Carbon Engine this time as well, maybe not....
