Snipers are dead in this game. Only a few of us still do it. I'm not even going to get into the lousy scopes, **** poor hit detection, redlines, etc. That's all been done. What I'm curious about, and the biggest area of concern is the total lack of contribution to the squad, mainly because of the very nature of sniping itself. Some ideas, and please contribute if you have more to add:
1. Make it so only snipers can scan. Require it so that the scan requires line of sight from the rifle, so snipers can't just scan a blind section. They must have visual contact of the enemy forces. And have the scan duration only last so long, and then a fair cool down period. Also tracker rounds that could be fired onto vehicles would be cool.
2. Give snipers better areas to take shots from in the map, so we don't see redline abuse.
3.Increase the WP for everyone depending on range of kill (not just snipers). Don't do it until the range on the CR and RR are fixed though. For instance, a kill at 0-50 meters, 50 points. 50-100, 60 points, 100-200, 70 points, and anything longer than that 80 points. Those numbers aren't solid, just a reference. Also add a headshot bonus of 10 per kill. I think it's fair that a 550M headshot should be worth 90 points. It's not like it would be game breaking, snipers don't usually get that many WP anyhow.
4. Snipers can hot drop vehicles for team mates in the map, provided they have them in their inventory. For instance, I could call in a LAV or HAV/DS for a squad mate half way across the map if needed. If they take possession of the vehicle, give it a 10 point "deployment" bonus.
Just some small, realistic easy fixes. I have some other ones, but they're more ludicrous and not really feasible at this point. But something has to be done, it's been overlooked for far too long.
Mainly I'm curious about other's ideas. |

While I lament the poor map design for snipers as much as you, saying that snipers are dead in this game is hilarious and a joke. Go play a pub match once in a while.

I do. I played 4 in a row where I was the only one sniping. I'm seeing less and less as the game grows older. |

It seems to me that's because many snipers earlier in the game were doing it because they were averse to getting into the thick of things. The snipers that are left actually consider themselves snipers. In short, the turds either quit or changed play styles.
I don't think snipers should be the only ones to be able to scan, however it would be nice if sniper rifles could highlight enemies you looked at one your squad's map like it used to be.
It sounds like you're suggesting snipers become a sort of overwatch position with actual abilities. I believe this kind of position has been thought about by the DEVs, but as a unit that sits in the MCC and directs team tactics.
Honestly, I think a lot of what you want could be kind of achieved now if you were the squad leader. That way you could put up attack, defend, and move-to orders. You could drop OBs effectively. You could see your squad position relative to enemies. In short, if you are the one who can see the whole map it makes sense for you to be in control. |

@OP dead might be too strong a word but with the 1.8 patch i'm not sure what will happen. TTK is going up according to what has been stated in the latest blog, damage mods are getting a reduction in output and proficiency is changing on the rifle. I myself have given some examples of additions to marksmen in general. I'll reserve any real judgement on the matter till after 1.8 before railing one way or another.
One thing that struck me that no one has mentioned yet that was stated in the dev blog and I quote "The Magsec SMG will initially only be available as a fully-automatic variant without a silencer." Does this mean they will release a version with a silencer or is this a hint at customizable weapons being available in the future.

All of your suggestions lead me to believe you stay on top of a tower sniping all day The two things the weapon class desperately needs are a significant head shot bonus and variable zoom on the scopes Also get off those towers man, there are tons of good sniping spots all over, I cant tell you how many people Ive popped just from setting my nest in a dip in the ground rather than someplace high up where Im silhouetted against the sky Lowland sniper is like the spanish inquisition you know

Many people who claim they're good snipers in this game suck; sorry but that's the truth of it.
Yesterday there was this shoddy sniper squatting on top of their MCC. Not once did this sniper shoot at any of my uplinks in plain view for him; which could have won his team the game of domination. He was too busy taking pot shots at my squad mate.
A good sniper makes their shots matter and can turn the entire tide of a battle. Unfortunately virtually all snipers in this game are KDR whores.
I hate to be the mean. But snipers don't need a buff, they need to get good.

I snipe where the wind takes me man, if its on the field in the trenches so be it, if its on some remote tower with line of sight into the enemy redline come at me bros. Other than that I agree with your points.

Actually I don't tower snipe. I know better, I'm the guy who cleans them off the towers. 90% of my sniping is done at ground level as well. It works for me, I guess. I take no greater satisfaction than taking a guy off a tower when he sticks his head out just a little too far.
Of the 3 I posted, I like the range bonus for WP the most. I think it's fair, since snipers only kill and don't do much else. No hacks, no reps or logi work...and half the time they don't get as many kills as the heavies on the ground. |

Wow.....
1. No. That would diminish the role of the scout and logistics. Snipers aren't even in range to use a scanner.
2. Go and find them yourself, be smarter use teamwork.
3. So many more problems caused, what about rail tanks and dropships? Forge guns? Laser rifles? Implementing this would be more work and would cause more work than its worth.
4. Any merc can call in a vehicle, this sounds like something more fitting for a FC. You could spend that time sniping.
All of these except for number two don't pertain to snipers and would only take away from am actual sniper. |

I do agree that snipers are getting screwed but apparently for much different reasons than you.
To your suggestions:
1) LOS spotting would be fine, also would be awesome if you could see the info (like hp, efficiency etc) from far out (something scanning cannot do).
2) Map design is an issue but you cannot cater to snipers. There are already TONS of sniper spots, too bad nobody wants to leave the redline.
3) The sniper rifle is not a true real skill based weapon so let's stop acting like it's something great to get a long range kill. It's kind of luck because of the low damage but that's another issue. This suggestion screws cqc weapons and has absolutely no reasoning.
4) What is the purpose? They can call their own vehicle down now. It's an interesting idea, though no wps are needed.
I think snipers are getting hosed because they can hardly do enough damage now to be a threat outside a Thales. With the nerfs to proficiency and damage mods the sniper rifle is going to be rough. Though I think it's something that hits all low rof fire weapons particularly hard. |

Sorry if this has been answered already. The description of the MAGSEC mentions a silenced version. They're just letting us know now that it's won't be available immediately. |

I already made my token "1.8 is ******* snipers" thread, honestly i grow tired of trying to point out how every change ccp goes to making snipers more useless, note how I'm not saying they are going away.
theirs a significant difference between useless and unplayable, and the stat padders sitting in the red line will still be their, just being even less useful then ever.

The useless type of sniper is going to be the only kind left. When your primary play style requirement is risk mitigation, a reduction in effectiveness really doesn't matter. Anyone with good long range accuracy who would like to contribute is going to be better served/more useful putting a RR or ScR on a logi or commando suit and playing in the ~80m range (while adding additional utility through equipment or a second light weapon). I like playing as an active ground level sniper, but it looks as though it will be harder and less rewarding come 1.8.

What I have been doing is running an SMG as my main weapon and then I can use any ligt weapon as a situational weapon.
When I run a sniper rifle it is for the scoping first. Otherwise, I can stay at one objective and if others are helping to defend it then I can just offer that long range support.
I try to use it as part of scoping an area rather than for the kill itself. If I see traffic I tru to shoot it.
Also, it is good when you see that the enemy is holding an area that you can LoS, like on top of the buildings to the entry of the outposts.
Otherwise, I use it at a point that I know there will be cross traffic. I use it when redlined and to counter snipe.
Rommel, you magnificent bastard, I read your book!
