I wish there were a militia version of each so I could try them all before deciding which to skill into. Is there a breakdown of the different aspects of each? |

I am partial to the assault rifle but I don't like it's ADS. I've tried the combat rifle to some success and the scrambler rifle too. The others are still a mystery.
I could spit out a page long description of each rifle out at you, but I feel that that would still not do each weapon justice. My advice is to make an alternate character(you have probably noticed you can have three characters per psn account) and skill into all the rifles on that character.
After that you simply get used to each one and decide which one you like the most. Then you simply skill into that weapon on your main file if you wish.
On a side note do not put the passive sp on your alternate file, keep it on your main so he keeps making more sp even while you are experimenting on the alt.

Yup.. doing all the experimenting on my alt, passive sp on my main.
I've skilled up to advanced cr and am almost at the fully auto cr. But now I'm wondering about rail rifles. I seem to eat a lot of lead from those. |

The Rail Rifle is overpowered, to put it simply. You have probably seen people complaining about it on the forums. It has great range, amazing DPS, and its only downside is decent kick, which at the higher levels you don't notice as much. The one thing though is that CCP has confirmed a nerf to the RR so don't expect it to do as good as it is doing now. It will still be good though, it just won't be as good.

I didn't read all of what Snow Turtle said (sorry but I'm not into reading a lot today, just skimming), but I can give you the gist of it.
Assault Rifle - The Gallente Assault Rifle is a fast-RoF, medium-damage, low-range weapon. Notice I bolded Gallente. The Gallente, as a race, dedicate all of their technology to very close-quarters. Outside of 30 meters, you're pretty much useless, but if they step anywhere near you, they instantly die. That's why the Gallente made the Shotgun. Damage Type: Hybrid - Plasma (+10% VS. Shield / -10% VS. Armor)
Rail Rifle - The Caldari Rail Rifle is a medium-RoF, high-damage, long-range rifle. The Caldari as a whole love their long-range weapons, which is why the Rail Rifle has the #1 highest range of all Rifles. They like long-range, high-damage, low-RoF weapons that can wreck anything they hit. The only downside is their weapons have a disadvantage in close quarters (the Sniper Rifle has no crossheir, and the Rail Rifle has a short charge-up time*). Damage Type: Hybrid - Railgun (-10% VS. Shield / +10% VS. Armor) *The charge-up time isn't much of a downside. It's so short, you're only at a disadvantage for about 1/4th of a second. The Rail Rifle is also supposed to have a much slower RoF (It's the Caldari's counterpart of the Gallente's Breach Assault Rifle)*
Combat Rifle - The Minmatar Combat Rifle is a high-RoF, low-damage, short-range support weapon**. The Minmatar like using Projectile Weapons (and explosives, but there aren't explosive rifles), which have the fastest RoF of all weapons, but the lowest damage. The Heavy Machine Gun is an excellent example of a Projectile Weapon. A RoF of 2000+, but 15 damage per bullet. Like I said though, the range isn't great on these (longer than Gallente though), but if you can get within range, you can do decent damage. Damage Type: Projectile (-10% VS. Shield / +10% VS. Armor)
Scrambler Rifle - The Amarr Scrambler Rifle is a single-shot, high-damage, medium-range rifle, that has a built-in charge-shot feature. The Amarr enjoy using Laser Weapons, which are long-range, high-damage guns that overheat quickly, meaning that through lots of use, you can burn yourself and it will prevent you from firing. In EVE, Lasers also have near-infinite ammunition, being able to fire 10k+ shots without ever running out. Sadly, it was not put in DUST (at least not for Laser Rifles). The Scrambler Series, specifically, is built for headshots. The Pistol and Rifle both have insane Headshot Damage bonuses (the Scrambler Pistol does over 400% damage on a headshot, where the Assault Rifle does 120% or something like that). So basically: Aim for the head and be accurate. Damage Type: EM (+20% VS. Shield / -20% VS. Armor)
Laser Rifle - Another Amarr Laser, this is like the Scrambler Rifle, with a few differences. It's more accurate (no spread), does less damage per shot, but has a faster RoF. Damage is constant, because the Laser Rifle is what we call a "Beam Laser" (Scramblers are Pulse Lasers). The Laser Rifle also does higher damage the longer it's fired. So holding down fire longer = more damage. Excellent suppression weapon, as no one is dumb enough to stand in the middle of a Laser, because they know it gets hotter. It's either stop trying to assault the point and get into cover, or die. Damage Type: EM
RoF Chart, HIghest to Lowest -Combat Rifle (Minmatar) Lowest Damage -Assault Rifle (Gallente) Medium Damage -Scrambler Rifle (Amarr) High Damage -Rail Rifle (Caldari) Highest Damage

I just wanted to correct the italicized bits- I use both the HMG (another Projectile weapon) and the Scrambler Rifle a lot. I can tell you the following:
Projectile damage type is actually 95% (-5%) vs shield (which I think is a tad broken on the CR, but that's another topic entirely), and the Scrambler Rifle doesn't have a headshot damage bonus.
However, in the case of Scrambler Rifle headshots, if you charge the weapon by holding R1, then headshot somebody, there's a lot of suits (especially shield-tanked dropsuits) that will be one-shotted.
Also, as I also favor the RR a bit (it was the weapon I intended to use on my AmLogi suit, while my AmSalt was a LR/ScR platform), and can say pretty confidently that damage per shot is actually higher on the Scrambler Rifle than the Rail Rifle; IIRC it's ~75 damage/shot for the Scrambler, and about 60 damage/shot for the Rail.
Other than that, spot on. |

EXCELLENT information, especially the hybrid damage breakdowns. Thanks!
Here's a tough one: Is there a breakdown for the average damage per second which factors in accuracy/ hit percentage? |

BTW... Why did they remove the scope from the assault rifle? I watched a vid where the AR had a scope. That is the only complaint I have with the AR, is that it has the hard sight at the end of the barrel and not a scope like all the rest. I hate when I bring up ADS and I can no longer see my target as my view is blocked by the barrel. |

Try doing some Faction Warfare matches to get loyalty points (LP) so you can experiment with gear you don't have the skills for yet.
But be warned - you will make no ISK and the other side FW is played by people who play to win. Use starter/ cheap fits.
Try to kill it all you want CCP, I still <3 my laser.

That was probably the Tactical AR. I don't remember the normal AR ever having a scope, but someone correct me if I am wrong.

Last time I remember a scope on the vanilla AR it was back in closed beta.

OK more questions:
1- Which is better CR or Assault CR? I've been using ACR because it is full auto, but I'm noticing the damage is less per hit. Would I be correct in thinking I'd get better damage output from a regular CR by repeated tapping of trigger thus achieving "near" full auto as I usually do?
2- Is the AR worth the spec? I'm tempted as it would make the starter fits w/ free AR more potent. |

Post 1.8 the AR will probably be worth the spec, as it isn't getting nerfed as hard as the combat rifle.
As for the ACR vs. the CR I feel that is down to just which one you prefer, as you can't quite achieve what you think would be "full auto" with the normal CR.

I've seen people use it really effectively, and I have had a friend tell me it was great, but I have not used it myself.

While it will hurt a lot, you have to really look out for that overheat. With a full auto CR or AR, you won't run into that risk. So its a trade off.
Less damage for consistent repeat fire until you're empty vs greater damage that can rip someone up but then lock up and prevent you from shooting or anything else for the next 7-11 seconds. Sometimes, those seconds REALLY count.
