I was reading the artist spotlight that was posted today and saw some sketches of this: http://web.ccpgamescdn.com/dust/news.control/65803/1/3.jpg
Where it was referred to as a satellite launcher. Until now I've never had a clue what this thing was supposed to be. This isn't a problem with the art...now that I know what it supposed to be I can see it. This highlights a problem with gameplay and immersion. In terms of immersion when I'm running around these structures they look cool, but I have no sense of *why* we're fighting here. A satellite launcher is important and I can imagine why some corp in New Eden would pay us to fight over it. As far as gameplay goes it makes it very difficult to communicate about these things.
Example: Imagine you're on Fracture Road and you spot a forge gunner by the location where alpha is in skirmish. How do you communicate this to your squad? What if someone isn't familiar with this map in skirmish? Saying "dude at skirmish alpha" doesn't help him. What if the enemy is at the building to the southwest of there? Your only option at that point is to give vague cardinal directions from a landmark that people understand. That's extremely awkward.
There's a simple solution to this though. In many games when you enter a new location some text will fade in and out in the corner of the screen giving the name of the location. All you have to do is make the same thing happen when we enter a socket. All the buildings already have names, just tell us what they are when we're near them. People would become familiar fairly quickly and we could start talking as if these were real places and not random collections of walls and doors. |

This would also help a lot when trying to point out a good spot to lay down an OB. |

lol
That happens all the time when I try to report the location of a threat. By the time I finish explaining where it is, someone else is already taking it down. |

This is one of the better ideas anyone's ever come up with.
What's even worse, is referring to "alpha" on Domination. Where alpha is not where alpha is. ;)
I feel the Research Lab profits quite a lot from having actual directional signs and labels that tell you where to go for things and label what they are.

Grid Co-ordinates on our overview and on the map for OB deployment would be very useful. Not just for dropping OBs but also for rallying at an agreed upon location while defending the Logi with the defend order on him. Seems like an easy idea to implement too, and would mean we know where we are.

Grid coordinates would be the easiest to implement immediately - although in its current form pulling up the full map is very risky and too slow given the ebb and flow of combat in DUST.
I think small overlay text naming buildings could have lots of potential but, as always with anything HUD related, we have to be mindful of clutter. But naming of landmarks and buildings would help both new and experienced players better relay directions.
+1
That guy you killed with 0% shields?
Yeah, I sniped him - go team.

A good first step to make relaying information quicker and simpler would be to add the other 3 cardinal directions to the compass. Maybe if CCP is feeling fancy enough they would add the intercardinal directions as well.
Totally not Fizzer94's forum alt. Definitely just a random dude.

Very true - I personally think the "N" for North is also a wee bit tiny to see. But I do have terrible vision too...
But yes, adding the other cardinal points would be a quality of life improvement that should be very simple.

Even just making the north marker larger and always easy to see would be enough. If you add other markers then you have to actually read the marker, rather than knowing at a glance which way is north. If you know north is to your left then you also know that turning 180 degrees will mean you're looking west. |

Most games with compass bearings have the North marker unique and much larger - like a very large chevron or triangle, with the other cardinal points being simple small letters.
In our setup, I'd recommend the other cardinal letters at the same font size as the N for North is, then replace the N with a large triangle on the edge of the radar to indicate plainly north. Since we currently see our own bearing on the radar in the middle, that should work.
(To my knowledge, the option to change the bearing on your compass does not exist - i.e., always point north and your image on the radar shows where you are pointing, or radar follows north not you.)
