Some of the prices being thrown around seem rather excessive if you do simple cost-benefit analysis. Now, I wouldn't mind having the full Templar set or LAV BPO, but I'll never run out of money regardless, and 50M+ for what is mostly Militia gear? Some of the named items will bring substantial money from the collectors, but I can't see the Mil Plate, for instance, bringing anything crazy. Yeah, I guess they might become significant when you have enough to build an entire fitting that you will actually run and you've gone broke from spamming proto/vehicles in pubs, but you might just as well run starter fits in most cases. Or, maybe if you die a lot. A LOT. |

You won't see the real value of BPOs until their place in dust development becomes concrete as well as the player base becoming something equivalent to Eve. Otherwise you'll never really know the value/demand.

The issue with starter fits is that they limit your fittings a little more than the BPO suits. With starter fits, you're unable to remove the starter modules and that alone hinders your fitting flexibility and those extra modules aren't always useful anyways. With BPO fits on the other hand, you can go to town with whatever setup you like that optimizes the low-tier suit without being forced to leave in useless modules.

Never discount laziness. The cosmetic bit is large too.
For me, paying "real money" to get a cosmetic item that is NOT permanent is stupid. A BPO was more justifiable since you'll always have it. BPOs were the only reason I ever bought packs or AUR. I actually bought the Gamestop-Mercenary pack after seeing the Syndicate SMG in game and thinking.. "I want that!" Pre-uprising, it was this great fire-engine red color. I'm not a huge fan of the current appearance though.
The permanence is the only thing that gives it appeal (I can have that "look" forever), and in that particular case it was worth $20 to me (I didn't care about any of the other random crap in merc packs). The unfortunate part there is that the "look" changed for the worse, and it ceased to be the thing I was originally interested in getting.
I think about this when people talk about taking away BPOs from people that already have them. It's the only reason I spent money in the first place, and so getting something like AUR refund is insulting. Having them become limited-use also defeats the purpose/appeal they were originally billed under. I'd give up on the game at the point they decide to flush the items I gave them money for, especially when they sold them as "forever".
The problem now is that people like me that were only willing to pay for permanent items are no longer giving them money. Perhaps they'll eventually have some other kinds of permanent cosmetic items, like living quarters, etc.

^ This.
The current prices are fixed NPC corps selling you the gear.
When the EVE/Dust economy gets merged, it will be a player market. Meaning people in EVE will create all the suits and weapons, then sell them to us Dust players for any amount they choose.
That's why BPO's were removed to begin with. It will bork the player driven economy of New Eden. |

Which is why I ever doubt they will remove any more BPOs from our inventory other than the four BPO vehicle modules that were removed as a result of A) the initial vehicle overhaul and B) becoming absolutely useless as a result of "A". Many of the those BPOs were bought directly with cash (no aurum required) such as the Templar BPOs, the Toxin weapons, and anything else that came prepackaged in a merc pack in the Sony store. Taking those BPOs away from our inventory will no doubt equal one massive legal headache for CCP that is so big that CCP won't be able to sleep at night anymore if they do that.
As for cosmetic items, I have an idea.
CCP should let us: A) Allow Dust players access to the Eve Online 'Noble Exchange' (NeX) store. B) Have Dust players get eve-style avatars so that we could dress them up using the AUR items available in the NeX store. C) Let us pimp our merc quarters for once (cough)stripperpole(cough). D) A permanent paint bucket system.

D) A permanent paint bucket system.
I think if you could use AUR to get really large luxury quarters with bells and whistles (and theoretically get other Mercs in there), that would be kinda cool. Our quarters now are kinda pointless. Of course, the quarters in EVE are also pointless and people still can't "socialize" with their avatars in EVE on a station. So, it may not be realistic to expect all those things when they haven't pulled it off EVE-side yet.
I was a little surprised they didn't already do EVE style avatars. The tech exists, and the model currently wouldn't need to do anything aside from walk around in tiny quarters.
I don't think a permanent paint bucket system will ever happen. The selling point for most "special" items is their coloring differences. The point at which we can make our own colors not only reduces the incentive to ever buy any special item again (dried up revenue), but it means we can effectively recreate anything they've released before (Templar Suits, etc.) devaluing every special thing ever released. So, we'd either get a really really limited paint bucket that can't replicate patterns or designs for crap, or they'd be forced to seriously step up their custom suit design with logos/textures we can't make (and upgrade past special suits). Either way seems like it wouldn't happen.
There's not always much variety in "special" stuff in EVE either. Like Sarum or Tash-Murkon Magnate frigates are stat-copied recolors of an existing ship with different logos tacked on for example. One thing I do like about the recolors in EVE is that attached turrets take on the new color schemes. So many of the avatar things are kinda questionable given there's so little use for the avatars.

Why do people go crazy over BPO's? well, it certainly isn't for the stats on those things. A lot of it is the unique color schemes, and the fact that people spent real money on them. There's something very appealing about owning something permanently as opposed to fittings that get used up as you die.
The funny thing is, if CCP continued to make crap BPO suits, but with cosmetic changes, people would buy them. Already own a Dragonfly Scout Suit, Thale Suit, Skinweave and Factional Scout Suit? Well check out this PINK!! Scout suit! Same stats as the dragonfly (which you already own) but it is Pink!!

My favourite kinds of setups are cheap suits & weapons with proto modules. Besides the asthetic (which is worth a few hundred mil by itself IMO), I'm quite likely to get my money back considering my playstyle.

bpo's are ok, but they are almost all militia gear, or at most standard. i use the toxin smg bpo on all of my fits just because i have it, and it's convenient (i like smgs better than pistols). would it break my bank if i had to buy the militia or standard smg if i didn't have the toxin?? of course not. a less than 1500 isk additon to any of my fits will not kill them.
i use my skinweave heavy as a cheap av fit. a bit over 7000 isk for the suit, militia fg, complex dmg modifier, standard flux grenade, and militia plate. if i had to buy the militia heavy suit, my fit would still be well under 10k.
the only bpo that i do like is the exile ar. 60 rounds vs 48 comes in handy. i forget if the standard ar has 60 or 48 rounds. i know the militia one does. if the standard has 60, then that wouldn't matter much to me either.
since i have 2 skinweave suits per class, i'm willing to part with one of them after the player market comes (soon tm... lol). i don't need the isk, but i would be willing to trade for officer ARs.
bottom line for me is, bpos are a matter of convenience. given their militia/standard classification and cheap isk equivalent, they are not completely necessary. they are more of a status symbol (as far as the skinweaves, toxins, MAG suits, exiles, etc... the ones we earned in closed beta, or were only available for a short period of time). that's about it. can most of us survive without them... sure. even the bpo lavs... i don't have one, i just park somewhere safe and recall my militia lav. |

Might be worth adding that the "Templar" stuff in particular is special because they represent the only BPO set of stuff that didn't exist pre-uprising. Every other BPO suit or weapon you could technically get prior to when the game launched (Dren was the first BPO STD Heavy, but that Heavy type existed prior to launch).
Then AFTER the game launched with slick Gallente suits, Amarr Medium suits, etc.... they proceeded to release a bunch of packs with Caldari Assault BPO suits (Dragonfly, Covenant, Dren) that most people already had access to prior. The Dren set is particularly interesting because it has four suits... which just happen to be the same damn race/role combos everyone already had access to before launch. But the TEMPLAR... oh baby, a logi that isn't Minny and an assault that isn't Caldari.
If they were still making/releasing NEW cosmetically different STD suit BPOs, I'd probably still be giving them money. I say probably, because it would've been nice if they'd actually mixed things up a bit. They released a "blood raider" suit (covenant) that was Caldari instead of Amarr despite the fact that Blood Raider ships are Amarr. How many Caldari Assault BPO types exist relative to everything else?
I don't need another Caldari Assault BPO (I have like... 4), and I don't even play Caldari. It's also a bit stupid that the penultimate reward for recruiting 50 people to Dust happens to also be.... a Caldari suit. The other suits you can unlock through the recruit system? Also Caldari. I'm not sure what the thinking was there, but it spits on the very concept of "racial" diversity to have the BPO releases so samey. People talked about that too, but I suppose it became a non-issue when they decided no-more-BPOs.
Dren and Templar equipment stats, wrong since release.

One more thing to note about the advantages of BPOs over starter fits. The starter fits have no high-slots slots for Gallente at least (not sure about the other races). BPOs have all the slots they need regardless of race.

I don't think they're stupid. I purchased a whole bunch of BPO suits, equipment and weapons back in the day and haven't regretted once. While MLT and basic stuff costs pennies, BPOs literally cost nothing. SAVINGS!
With my Dren Logi BPO, I get 3 (THREE) equipment slots. With the TTK as low as it is, there isn't much point in running anything higher than an MLT logi suit.
And while you certainly can stack tons of mods on a proto suit, I look at is as paying 60some k isk for an extra equipment slot. *shrug*

A LOT. You can make a Duplicat of a Starter Fit, and remove a Yellow module from the duplicate, if there is a module on the Starter Fit that you donGÇÖt want.

I'm surprised we don't see more people complaining how BPOs going to mess up the market! (Back pre 1.6 that was a big topic) I guess they (The haters) realized that all the ISK being giving out for free to all the PC Corps locking districts has broken the economy far worse then these unlimited run BPOs ever will. All the no-risk free isk given away, hell I need to ask Dust Charts to see how bad the economic impact is going to be. I wish CCP would just announce it as a exploit already and bring the ban hammer down CCP Fox Four has yet to release the attackers in PC data dumps so us New Eden mercs can do the policing job for them.

Taking out half a million ISK worth of tank scrubbery for less than 10K?
PRICELESS! I have exactly that same fitting.... Fossil? 1)My templar stuff kicks so much a$$. Red and goooooold FTW. 2) it gets bonuses... BPO ScR with prof 3 still shreds 3) Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, says "f*ck you, douche" better than killing them in a free suit!
It's not free
It either cost you $150 for the pack or 300m ISK for the code
When I get killed in my STD suit by a guy in BPO's I just think .. ah .. he spent real money on that suit .. what a douche xD |

"I'm not going to get any ISK back? .okay no prob, I just wont put any ISK *in*"
In a lot of ways, starter fits are okay for that.. except that there's no scout starter fit. So, I have a Valor BPO.

I bought BPOs because I wanted to support the game early in development. And as a general principal I don't do subscription gaming any more. I bought 2 merc packs and that $50 pack with the LAV. At this point I have no real desire to spend more but I don't regret my purchases.
I am much less interested in future purchases due to CCP wanting to remove (or at least not release new) BPOs. It makes sense for the game, it just doesn't fit my interests as a customer.
I think that if BPOs are tradable on the open market their value will be lower than expected. The are a nice convenience, but will take a lot of play time to earn your isk back and make a profit. |

They're the closest thing we have to trophies. They used to look cool. Apparently, that was OP.
Makes it easier to justify a "**** it, I'm going in" mentality sometimes. Especially when you can lose ~500 fittings before going ISK negative in a match.
