Operation Mauler is a good idea but allow me some constructive criticism. It seems we've taken a step back in the "play time-to-reward" ratio with this event. A big concern for Triple SP Week was that the multiplier for play wasn't high enough and it significantly increased the amount of time spent playing if you wanted the benefits.
It seems as though we've backtracked to that in a way with this event with 500 additional SP for every kill with an HMG/Forge Gun and 250 additional SP for a heavy kill. Now, apart from having a notepad handy with a leaf chart showing Kills and Confirmed Heavy Kills, it seems the amount of time investment necessary is MUCH higher than one would see than previous events.
To give an idea of what that's like for everyone, that's 3000 heavy kills with anything besides light weaponry, 1,500 kills with heavy weapons or 1,000 heavy kills with heavy weapons
This is something that is going to take a -very- long time. Eight kills with heavy weaponry a game (spitball average) that's about 190 matches. That's 48 hours of Ambush matches spread out over two weeks, which is a lot to ask out of a gamer. There are pros as the player activity goes up and certain behavior is encouraged but we also have to consider the cons which include burn out and a lot of the game's overarching issues become more apparent.
Another thing is that it's focusing on a particular specialization that not everyone uses, so it's either drop some SP into Heavies to run them (there are no militia HMGs afterall) as a jumpstart to a larger investment or grind out the 3000 kills otherwise which is an exceptionally long time when you consider that not all of the players on the other team are going to be running heavies.
TL;DR - Bonus SP is great but this shouldn't turn Dust 514 into a second job. Or third, if you play Eve Online. Too much time for too little reward.

Just wanted to mention something about dropping SP into HMGs (no MLT HMGs after all.)
Use a MLT Amarr Heavy Frame with Republic HMG. No SP necessary.

True but that also goes into Faction Warfare, which is going to add a lot of wait time in between matches and you're more likely to lose more heavies than you can afford to buy (the HMG that is)

I can understand it feeling like a kick in the nuts if you're really invested in the game, but just don't have the time to devote to it to always hit these caps. So it could possibly ultimately drive some players away. Which is bad.
That being said, I don't really see anything wrong with events being based around specific roles. That is, as long as they are varied and come frequently enough. Which I'm hoping to see start happening this year with all the racial parity, and as CCP gets back on to a regular schedule.
Oh, and I actually did the math myself when this event was announced. Except that I used 15 kills per match as my conservative estimate. Which would mean that as long as I average 8 matches a day where I average 15 kills a match, I'll hit the cap. And that's before even considering any heavies I also kill. So yea, overall I'm pretty happy with this event.

Is there a reason you must cap out? Too much focus on extrinsic rewards and not enough on intrinsic rewards. Killing those bastards that killed you should be enough.

although i am participating in this event as a heavy, and not a heavy killer -so to speak- i agree that people who are going after heavies are not gaining enough sp, 250 is not very fair to people who don't use heavies, plus the fact that they will get NO bonus sp for the vehicle kills so that means it takes them twice as long to get the first portion of the event, and they cannot partake in the second event at all. not a very fair event.... But i'm still having fun :)

Like all things in Dust 514, it's amazing how hard it is to appeal to the entire player-base isn't it

The event isn't "get 1500 kills with a heavy weapon and earn bonus sp"
It's "use heavy stuff and get bonus sp"
Seriously, is your goal in this game to earn every single skill point possible? That's not what these events are about...it's just an incentive to use a certian playstyle, or a bonus for doing certain things. It's at such a high amount so that players that are hardcore players can earn bonus sp the entire time. You don't have to hit a certain amount.

The way I see it is that you don't HAVE to complete the event 100%, I mean I certainly don't plan on ginishing it and if I somehow do then cool. Either way we're all going to accumulate SP over time, so I try not to think about it as my main objective more like a side option if I'm looking for something different to do.

You'd be silly not to! 750,000 SP what with 1.8 racial parity right around the corner? (Reference point: It's 2,000,000+ to Proto out a dropsuit. The 750,000 SP will go a long way to reducing that blow)

they are giving two weeks to complete as well instead of one.
I got 220 confirmed kills in my time of playing last night. unconfirmed how many were heavy sadly i forgot to keep track. with heavy kills taken into account I suspect i'm closer to 250-280
that would mean I would cap out in about 7 or 8 days, since i have 14 i can take it pretty easy, and reach my goal. |

There hasn't been an event yet where I haven't found myself debating the value of the time and labor invested. For bonus SP, I grind. For items, I don't even bother. I just play my game and let it be. This is one of those events where not having a stat tracker is going to cut me short of the full bonus because I have no way to know how far I've gone, and thusly won't put forth the time and effort to achieve all of the outlined goals. I could play all week and insure completion, but that's not going to happen.

Well, if it is too much of an effort to play the game, you can just do what Mark Burkhart was doing and boost.
Save time, get your rewards, and hopefully get reset.
Either that or just play the game. I played the first day of the event and got 400 heavy kills. I'll get my full bonus SP just capping out twice.
Maybe get better with a heavy suit?
