Because CCP loves to abuse dropships.
It's much more dramatic to send it down in flames to crash on the ground than it is to vaporize it in the air. |

every other vehicle explodes when its armor hits zero wtf maks derpships so special? i want the option to jumpout of my car or tank b4 it explodes or just make the dropship like the cars and tanks |

Because CCP find it funny when we jump out of our derpships and immediately commit suicide because the falling dropship crushed us in mid air... I find it a bit funny too actually. But no it's a balance thing, you have Jihad jeeps that can be seen driving right at your tank, now take a dropship, time and time again I can sneak up behind a tank, get out and fire my forge gun/grenade spam it to death... If my ship were to explode on contact this would be a very over powered Jihad technique (although it would balance against the red liners.)
Okay there was nothing serious about any of this post, but still... |

The fact the kamakazi pilot only lost 90k at most but the ADS lost over 300 to 400k...Still funny to see though.

I seriously doubt it's on account of balance issues.
More than likely it's because the engine cannot handle it because you have to have the DS blow up and then the corpse has to fall to the ground. They'd also have to deal with what happens when the corpse hits anything on the ground.
Either that or graphically they didn't want to animate the corpses falling before they despawn. |

the reason for the delay is so that dropships dont become giant loot pinatas
dropships are meant to be transports with room for 7 mercs thats a lot of points
if ships blown up instantly then everyone would be tripping over themselves to try and kill for those **** tons of points while nobody is going to want to get in a flying coffin that everyone is trying to kill
if you change dropships deaths to instantly die then you hamper the ships ability to do its job as a transport

I totally get this and I'm fine with the 'we're going down, bail out' theory. I'm also twitchy and don't trust pilots. When I'm in one, and the doors close I can barely see the orientation we're at. As soon as something shifts too much I panic and leap from it.
However, I kinda am a fan of going down with the ship mentality. I feel if you destroy the DS in the air and its crashing, the pilot should die at that time. I don't think they need to necessarily animate that body falling. You see tankers immediately dissolve when their tank does. I don't see what that animation couldn't be the same when the ship hits the ground. You just remain inside.

If only it didn't just count as suicide when we get smashed by or land on top (causing a situation where you can't use your inertia dampeners) of our falling dropships. That or a dropship going critical on low health before exploding would be good enough to satisfy this issue. |

dropships need to go boom when the armor is at zero plain and simple, there is no reason to let the pilot have a get outa death free card if lavs and tanks dont get the same crap. peolle riding and flying know when to jump if they are going down and if they dont they need to learn not be givin a free pass to do the crap again |

The reason why they don't explode is if im not mistaken but a couple of updates ago there was a module called the damage control unit and if you were in a dropship falling with 0 health and you activated it the fire went out and you could turn on a amour repper and fly away |
