I don't mind getting outnumbered, outmanoeuvred, outranged, or even plain outgungamed - it happens from time to time. The thing I ******* hate are all the deaths due to playstyles that involve virtually zero risk or skill, e.g.:
- Spawn camping - Redline sniping - Tanking (with 1.7 invincible tanks) - Large rail turret sniping - Tower forging - Hop in/hop out LAV+heavy combo - Reviving into line of fire
All these playstyles make the game less enjoyable for the typical run and gun FPS player. The more prominent these playstyles become, the less playable the game becomes. A new player that keeps dying to invincible tanks, or snipers in an area they can't enter, or revive-spamming logis - all things he can't even shoot back at - is much less likely to stick to the game.
The ridiculous thing is that, time and time again, CCP has left these cheap playstyles untouched, or even buffed them. Look at 1.7. Redline snipers, large rail turret snipers, tower forgers, and revive-killers were all left as they were, while tanking and spawn camping got buffs. Before that, the LLAV+heavy craze went unaddressed for months (it's little brother, Saga+heavy, is still here). And CCP wonder why they have a tiny playerbase.
There is a place for all of the above - even spawn camping. But they should not the be the no-brainer they presently are from a risk-reward perspective. CRU spawn campers should be visible to spawning players. Snipers should be on the battlefield, not by the MCC. Tankers should fear AV.
Diversity is one of the strengths of this game, but players in niche roles should be subject to roughly the same risk/reward that the rest of the playerbase faces. All too often niche=instadeath (laser users now, HMG heavies until recently, scouts since forever) or Godmode (e.g. tankers now, LLAVs before that, redline sniping since forever).
For 1.8, I would really, really love to see CCP recognize that spawn camping, redline sniping, invincible tanks, etc, are not isolated phenomena, to be addressed one-by-one, only when forum QQ reaches fever pitch. They are parts of a larger whole, the cheap death machine, which turns away players at a rate of knots. CCP should relentlessly tackle cheap deaths, whatever form they take.

I agree with all of this. Everyone knows the feeling of being spawn camped by a Tank in Ambush, right? Now take it from a noob's perspective - someone that has put almost no time into this game, doesn't know how it works, or nearly anything. I definitely wouldn't stick around.

That's not how I play, and if that makes me 'bad', so be it. |

Ambushs are lost by blueberries with no clue. Skirm and Dom have safe spawns. No one coordinates to break a siege they just test the fence with the frantic need to try and get revenge
we need smarter players. We need instructors at the academy. We need better tutorials. And yes we need an AV BUFF. It could be as simple as reducing the skulls it takes to get proto Av. Anything less is laughable.

Easy fix submitted months ago. After several unanswered deaths, you begin to spawn in more slowly, to keep you from being a scoreboard liability to those who are trying to turn things around.

Ryme Intrinseca wrote:but they don't address the fundamental point. Why can someone rack up dozens of kills without even leaving the deploy zone?
Simple answer: because the other team lets them do it. Remember, if you can shoot someone with a sniper rifle, you can be shot back.
Longer answer: the redline tends to be elevated, which allows for snipers and rail tanks to command a large portion of the battlefield. Flattening the terrain would likely help to reduce this, but efforts need to be made that the redline doesn't become an open killing ground for a redlined team.
I'm assuming that many people have simply never bothered playing as a sniper; those that do will quickly learn where the "juicy" camping spots are and position themselves accordingly. Knowing this, I pay attention to the killfeed and keep an eye out for sniper kills. If I see the same name start popping up, I know that it's time to go hunting, either with a sniper rifle of my own or with a scout suit to add a personal touch, and run through a mental checklist of the likely locations the sniper may be operating from.

The game has a tactical edge to it, granted, more like MAG than COD. But even in MAG, I'd call the main playstyle 'run and gun', i.e. most players were not sat at the deploy, or on a tower, or in a tank. They were running around with guns. |

I Agree with you mostly but disagree with a few things.
Redline snipers and redline tankers are absolute BS. AVs need to be buffed and tanks need to be slower. Hopping out of an LAV isn't really cheap (not that I do it), it's somewhat smart, if you sprint at 5 m/s then having an LAV is fine for increasing mobility and getting yourself to enemies quicker. Also the issue of spawn camping, you CAN see if there are people spawn camping, it's just a little hard to see depending on the color of the map, you just need to be smart on how you play and don't just go around spawning ASAP without thinking a little. And one thing that makes me SMH is when people spawn in at an uplink, die by redberry at the point, AND THEN DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN thinking they can kill him knowing he has the upper hand. Other than that I think you're right on the dot though. =)
Minja. We run and hide. And then we kill you.

Interestingly, Dust isn't supposed to be a "Run and Gun" FPS. Also, teamwork is supposed to be important, thus negating a large part of your complaint.
I will agree on the niche role observations but also add that all roles should be niche. there should be no generalist weapons or roles, thus your comment regarding " the rest of the playerbase" is actually the problem here. there should be no "rest of the playerbase" This has plagued Dust from the beginning and is the bulk of why Dust is boring, and has become AR 514*.
Diversity and content needs to be the current major focus.
*AR514 - meaning high dps, hitscan weapons that are midrange and shortrange powerhouses. This kills diversity and tactical thought. |

- Spawn camping: Give us back the short range sensors on Drop Uplinks and CRUGÇÖs.
- Redline sniping: Have a second line 40m behind the Red Line behind which weapons do not function. This still provides an engagement zone if a team is Redlined, but keeps Red Line snipers within range of most weapons if you are willing to go to the edge of the Red Line to hunt them down.
- Tanking (with 1.7 invincible tanks): 1.8 will improve the AV/Tank balance. Expect a Swarm buff.
- Large rail turret sniping: Then kill the dam turret. I got killed twice by a guy that went 8/0 on a Red Line Turret, but then I did not stop what I was doing to destroy the turret, so I canGÇÖt exactly complain about it.
- Tower forging: This is not as much of an issue as it was before they nerfed Forge Gun splash radius. You can snipe them ore call in a dropship.
- Hop in/hop out LAV+heavy combo: Guilty. Sorry. Of course you can still shoot the driver out of a LAV. I also kill LAVGÇÖs with my HMG. I am sure Mass Drivers and Grenades would do a job on them. You could carry AV grenades.
- Reviving into line of fire: They should only count a death as a death if the clone is lost.

And to think some people don't think Dust already has PVE!
For as much time I spend fighting to get unstuck from the landscape, I beg to differ. |

Still doesn't explain why you're telling a player that gets 20-40 kills per game (plus uplinks, scans, and hacks up the wazoo) to 'Learn to play'. Because I've been _very_ often in the situation of playing ambush against proto squad(s) with the team basically falling apart, so I know how to extract myself and establish new positions. And I'm saying the complaint about spawn killing is sign of someone inexperienced or unwillingness to take loses in exchange for experience. Tactical awareness is something you have to practice, and I can't remember the last time I got killed close to spawn when it wasn't the intention to get **** deep. I still don't think you're grasping the point that friendly CRUs and objectives no longer show red if they're camped. All the tactical awareness in the world won't tell you that you're spawning in front of five reds and a blaster tank.
Don't get me wrong, I don't often die this way. I am a full proto tryhard with some semblance of gungame, so usually massacre the campers unless the odds are really stacked. But that can't possibly be the balancing factor. A new player can hardly be expecting to mow down multiple campers with their militia AR.
My solution is for CCP to restore team vision to CRUs and objectives. What's your 'tactical awareness'-based solution? Wait til some blues spawn and make sure they don't die, wasting precious time and probably conceding the game? Always spawn at the MCC, again conceding the game? |
