The effective range is changing from 55 effective to 50 so there might be other things in the works for it but who know. But for mixing it with the shotgun, I wouldn't want a Ion pistol just because of the shorter range. If they are close enough for the Ion Pistol to be most effective, I would think just Sprinting at them with a shotgun would work well. Bolt Pistol looks interesting. 45 Optimal and 60 Effective is really quite strong and the damage is very high. I think it would be a good partner to the shotgun as it covers its deficiencies nice. Magsec SMG might also be cool though it doesn't cover the range gap quite like the Bolt Pistol and I am sure it will be much less accurate of a weapon.

Probably will be hellaciously useful for niche people without a solid Short to Mid-Range weapon. DUST is a half decent game. Be happy its free.

I love the scrambler pistols,and will try out the new ones,but true pistol users in this game are kind of few and far between,so I'm not very worried about any of them. Honestly though,I doubt that either the bolt or the ion will be better for me than my trusty TT-3.

But the Bolt just does so much damage per shot...at some crazy ranges. I think (for some reason) CCP has yet to realize how valuable range is in an FPS. Also, the current proposed version of Cloaks doesn't allow firing while cloaked. Not just a laymen, but the laymen.

And don't revolvers typically shoot really fast? That's always been how I pictured them. Although that's probably way more from pop culture than actual guns... Not just a laymen, but the laymen.
