Today I went on to IRC and asked the devs, why don't tanks show on radar when i can see a clone. Didn't get a reply so I thought I would talk here.
Basically today i had a tank at my back close enough to be on radar but it didn't show up.
So, should we try and convince CCP to change this. ?

They show up for me. They follow the same rules as dropsuits though and have to be in range of your passive before they show up.
That's 10m for most suits, even a good scout is only scanning to 50m or so.
It really makes little sense why vehicles don't show up at further ranges, they are as loud as semis. Would be nice if they would appear on your map at minimum of 50m.
If they are not showing up and your certain they are in range of your passive or you have LOS could be a bug. Try to repeat it and then report it to CCP.

Happens when you're in a tank as well. We have the best dampening in the game.
I don't know why it is nor would I care if it was fixed. |

I felt the same about LAVs during the murder taxi days. I could hear it charging at me full speed, but the wonky audio meant you wouldn't always know where it was coming from, so the LAV not showing up on radar wouldn't help matters either. |

Because a bulky thing like a tank should only have a dB of 12!

Didn't you hear? They're doing a live testing of some new sensor dampening mechanics this week and decided to put them only on tanks just for the hell of it. ;)

So, should we try and convince CCP to change this. ? First, some answers. Some of which have already been stated so I'll be repeating some data.
Every vehicle and suit in DUST has a signature of some magnitude. These are measured in dB, and I believe that confuses some people. That is a dB unit which does not represent sound. It represents the amount of "distortion" the unit causes which allows it to show up on scanners of varying sensitivities. As you can see here, a Gunnlogi has a signature radius of 200 dB. That's a massive signature. I don't think any suit has anything beyond 65 dB. It's safe to say that no scanner in DUST lacks the sensitivity to pick up a HAV.
The second thing, though, are passive scan radius valus. Most suits and vehicles in DUST only have a passive 360 scan out to 10m away. The only exceptions are light suits with a 16m scan radius. These are, of course, extendable with modules.
The final point, and this is debatable, is where these 10m are measured to. My personal belief is that due to game design (not the best), this is measured to centre mass instead of outer most part. This basically means you could lose 2-4m in scanning distance when trying to pick up a HAV on passive scanner. It sucks, but that's my current theory.

So, should we try and convince CCP to change this. ? It's an old question that we've asked before. Never got a reply then either. It definitely needs fixing, it's one of those core mechanics that we need reliability and consistency from. I'm certain the fist several times a new player encounters this it's one of those wtf/letdown moments.
The only theory that seems plausible to me is that the minimap lags. If that tank rolls up behind you at top speed it may take the minimap a second or two to catch up.
If it's not minimap lag then it makes no sense to me at all, other than broken mechanics more than a year old.
I support SP rollover.

There has to be something broken somewhere with radar identification. Every now and again I can't even get tanks to show up when I use a quantum scanner. I was in a building yesterday in a match, and even though the tank was right outside on the other side of the wall, and I did a 360 scan, starting with near where the tank was, it never showed up.

Did you make sure to keep the tank within your cone for an entire scan pulse?

Yes indeed, I scanned twice even. He never moved. It picked up the infantry over in that area but not the tank. Only reason I knew he was there in the first place was I saw him myself when I looked around the corner for flankers. I thought it was complete BS. Has happened to me in other maps as well, particularly the research facilities. It's actually one reason I've died more than usual in those areas is because after doing a scan sweep and eliminating all reds in the vicinity with my CR, I found myself get gunned down by a blaster tank from behind in a street that never showed up in my scans.

Isn't that the truth. The thing that frustrates me is that it works 80% of the time and tanks do show up, and the other 20% nothing shows. I'd rather have it be one or the other.
