I started reading Dune almost exactly a year ago, right when Open Beta started (which is when I started playing) and the combination of both has gotten me near permanently hooked to the game. Just last night I finished the 3rd book and am starting the 4th.
It first started with the visuals of Chromosome; the red dusty landscape couldnt help but paint a picture of Arrakis in my mind.
Now its Ornithopters flying everywhere (Dropships), Fremen Death Commandos slicing through personal shield generators (Minjas) and so much more!
I even started to play the Meta-game and create the persona that is 1st Lieutenant Tiberius according to, or inspired by, things that I've read in the series.
Nerd-Rant over lol (for the time-being)
So, can anyone in the Dust community relate to this?

I've heard bad bad things about Brian Herbert's books so I'm not sure, if I'm desperate for more Spice after Chapterhouse I might check em out, but my eyes are blue on blue as it is

Shai-Hulud would decimate these idiotic mercenaries running around the open, IN RHYTHMIC SPRINTS!
But seriously though I've thought about this and decided that all 4 races represent each of the following:
- Gallente are the Atreides of old, during the times of their homeplanet of Caladan. The Green Hawk symbol is reason enough, its also why I chose Gallente as my Race initially
- Amarr are the Atreides of future; An Empire founded on the principles of Muad'dib but warped by the sins of human nature, a government who's dependence lies upon religion, where breaking the Law is Sin.
- Caldari are the Sardaukar of the House Corrino; extremely militaristic nation with emphasis on deadly efficiency and superior training
- Minmatar is obvious, they are the Fremen; able to adapt and use their environment with deadly ingenuity, they might succumb to simple military firearms but their guile and ferocity is unmatched, their Crysknifes edged with poison and wielded with the words of Gurney Helleck in mind: The slow blade penetrates the shield

Yeah I have read most all of the Dune novels. Good reads.
One of the major reasons I love Imperial, and religious groups in Sci Fi games and films.

YES!!!!
I watched the movie (the one with the same guy who played in Showgirls) when I was a kid. I didn't understand it back then but I was fascinated by it. Later on, I will watch the movie again with a more "seasoned" mind and it was jaw dropping. Sought out the book and just was floored by so much wisdom that can be gained from that novel. I haven't read the next series of books, just Dune. It's on my list of things to do though.
And I just love that part when Paul Atreides, now known as Muad'Dib is filled with such a sadness to see himself hurdling towards his terrible purpose. For the Fremen around him to revere him left him lonely. But this is his destiny that he cannot change. The path he must walk is a lonely and dangerous one. That's just some powerful stuff man.

Gah! I would say to never watch the movie! but since you went to read the book anyway its alright.
I agree Arck, there is so much wisdom in the book; from the principles of leading a people, characteristics of a great leader to the simple power of love.
I can tell you right now that if you enjoyed the first book, the rest of the series will blow your mind. As I said I finished Children of Dune last night, I'm starting God Emperor of Dune quite soon

It happened somewhere between the recasting of beloved protagonist as 'Jabba the Hutt' and the reincarnation / re-reincarnation of every soul so meticulously groomed and presumably forever lost. The more I think about it, the more I change my mind. Don't read the kid's work.
As for the movies ... do yourself a favor and read the original first. Look for the Frank behind the Hebert. |

LOL! I forgot, the first rule about Dune is that you don't mention the movie
Yea I can't wait to get my hands on the other books. Hooray for Amazon

It is known that the Atreides are masters at flying Ornithopters; Duncan Idaho was known to have the ability of flying so low to the sands that his Thopter would be masked by the Dunes, and the entrance to Muad'dibs personal chambers were only accessible through a very small landing pad, one that when operated by anything but a master pilot would plunge to their deaths.
This is not unlike trying to land on the ringed area of the Surface Research Lab trying to get uplinks on the catwalks of B :D
Actually, this is not unlike flying in Dust at all!

I've heard of that game but never played it! It's supposedly a cult classic that was based off the books. If you're into some fantastic sci-fi intertwined with an expansive and overarching lore then you should read the books; just don't watch the movie since it will put false information and images in your head, your own imagination is all that is required when reading Dune

Every dune fan should read Brian and Anderson's work. Your get the birth of all your favorite houses and characters. And the machine campaign is nothing short of amazing. Yes the writing is not as great but they did use frank's notes on the universe he created. And to find out what the Honored Martar were running from was a perfect ending. Now the Paul book was just ok and not real ain't to the story arc. So if your a fan and haven't read the others there is 7 more books of interstellar adventure. And finding out the true origins of Ix, is mind blowing. All hail, Duncan Idaho, our beginning, present, and future!

HBO did a remake mini series of Dune, and followed with the children of Dune. Worth watching, but nothing compares to the books. |
