We have all been a squad leader at some point. Pausing mid match to pull up our map overlay to place squad orders and dropping OB's. I'm sure some of us have been sniped, forged, ran over, and even OB'ed when trying to issue these orders as well. Well I've been thinking and here's an idea of mine that imo would add a level of immersion to the game, and also make issuing squad orders easier.
Enter voice commands.
Basically the TACNET is an integrated AI system that links to all suits supplying we boots on the ground with beneficial battlefield data. Since it is an AI, we should be able to interact with it via voice commands and have it respond to our requests and needs.
These voice commands would be issued over your headset...if a headset is not owned, the old way of issuing commands would still be available of course.
Here are some applications. For now I'm simply going to name the TACNET AI A.I.S.H.A (Automated Interface Supplying Homogenized Appdata)
_____________________________________________
Placing Squad Orders
Command: AISHA, place defend order on Objective B. AISHA: Defend order placed on Objective B.
Squad Commander only command
What would happen is the order be it defend/attack would be placed where the player specified and a notice would go to members of squad members. the notice would be something like AISHA softly chiming in and saying "New Squad Order - Defense Order placed on Obj B," and then pulse the defend order a couple of times on all squad members mini maps.
_____________________________________________
Highlight Enemy
Command: AISHA, highlight enemy (enemy must be in cross hairs of weapon in order for the command to work) AISHA: Enemy highlighted for squad view.
Any player in squad command
This command would be useful for anti snipers, and anti vehicles (HAV's). We have all tried to spot a sniper or HAV, then have the squad commander go into his/her overview to try and place an attack order on the sniper or HAV for squad view. Once issued, this command will highlight whatever enemy is in the command issuer's cross hairs for a short period of time (ten seconds or so) for squad view. For members in the squad receiving the notice, AISHA would say "Enemy threat highlighted by squad commander" and the enemy threat would pulse on the minimap for the allotted time.
_____________________________________________
Vehicle Requests
Command: AISHA, call in (vehicle here) AISHA: Vehicle request (accepted/denied) RDV arriving in "x" time.
Any player in squad command
This command is pretty self explanatory.
_____________________________________________
Dropping OB's
Command: AISHA, drop orbital strike on objective "x" AISHA: Strike request approved........WOMMMMMMM
Squad commander only command
This command would only be useful for dropping OBs on objectives, if a precise OB is needed, it will have to be done manually the old fashioned way (pulling up the map, etc etc). I could see this useful if an OB is awarded to a squad and everyone starts yelling at the squad leader something like "DROP THE OB ON C, WE NEED IT NAOWZ!" Usually when this happens the squad leader is in a firefight and doesn't have time to stop, pull up the menu, select a target, and then drop it, this is where this voice command would come in handy.
_____________________________________________
In the end, I feel like this will make the HUD, TACNET, and AI more interactive and useful. Yes, it would take some getting used to at first, but overall I think players would appreciate it and come to like the "Jarvis" like feel of it. It would make squad commanders feel a little more important, and heighten the immersion level of all players.

Voice commands are a lot of work. Look at Kinect, that thing works... Every once in a while, and M$ has been working on that crap for awhile.
Maybe far down the road... |

The orders just need simplifying. I think the only ones we really need are the Defend order and the Rally order. The Rally order should also give the WP bonus to anyone within range (same range as the defend order). |

Yeah, trust me, this isn't something I'm talking about putting in 1.8 or 1.9....this is something more like a year and a half from now kind of implementation.

I get that. Maybe get it on the PS4, the voice commands, while limited, do work rather well. Could build off what the system already knows. |

I wouldn't mind a push to talk button press with short commands like "attach/defend alpha/bravo/charlie" or "warbarge strike" which takes you straight to the overhead map with OB marker ready. It would have to be seemless in switching from the voice channel of course, almost instant actually.

Perhaps a double tap of "up" on the dpad activates the AI listening mode or something?

WellI personally would find holding down one of the dpads would be enough. I need like 1 second to say "defend alpha" and then i take my finger off, exist AI listen mode and return to squad chat. I'm not too interested if there's any kind of delay in being able to communicate though as it kind of defeats the purpose which is trying to streamline the process of giving orders.

The processing time for a myriad of commands would be prohibitive, I'd think and/or not very accurate. I can see problems already. Vehicle call in would not work; how will it tell apart my 20 different tanks? I guess it could use a numbering system. The already defined names would not work.
Overall, voice commands require too much effort for too little benefit and too many performance costs to be viable, imo. You'd still only be able to place orders on what you're pointing at or an objective. You'd still need to press a button or open a panel to issue the commands, otherwise the game would need to be monitoring the audio streams of 32 different players trying to figure out who is issuing a vehicle/placing an attack/defend order, at which point you can just access the order wheel with R3 and click the fire button.
Many suits I've worn, many burdens I've borne, for the oaths I've sworn.
