Does the remaining 20 shields 'eat up' the whole bullet damage or does the remaining 10 damage move to armor?

Now let's assume it does 80% damage to shields but 120% damage to armour. Now you shoot it at some unlucky fool with 10 shield and 10 armour left.
First the bullet hits shields and does a full 10 HP of damage to them, depleting them entirely. In order to do this 10 shield damage, the bullet had to "use up" 10/0.8 of its damage (that's 10 HP multiplied by the inverted 80% value). That comes to 12.5 damage "used up" to do 10 HP of damage. But the shield is gone.
Now the bullet hits armour but only has 7.5 damage left in it. It is also more effective against armour. If we multiply 7.5*1.2 (the remaining damage multiplied by the armour effectiveness) we get 9. So the bullet hits armour and takes 9 HP out of the remaining 10 HP.
Sadly the bullet didn't win this time. A 20 damage bullet against a 20 HP suit just couldn't produce enough armour damage to overcome the shield penalty.

I've escaped many times from situation with 0/0 shields/armor and every time it feels like an angel looked down to me and decided that I'm not ready for heaven yet.
But yeah, there seems to be some minimal buffer under the suit.
EDIT: Or, as Grit Breather said there's resistances and roundings up and down and what you have.
But my original question got answered: Does the damage move to armor after shields concerning one bullet.

May I ask what you are basing this on?
I've been under the impression that rounding causes the visible 0 armor left to appear. Damage dealt includes decimals but the display only shows whole numbers and thus rounds down to the nearest integer.
If assuming that hitting exactly 0 armor does not result in death, I would conclude that any point of damage afterwards, no matter how small would result in death, rather than a possibly arbitrary 10 points of damage. The reason I say this is because this information isn't indicated in the HUD in any way nor would really be intuitive to a player. |

The current Static Data Export has this as a stat on all suits. Similarly there is 200 health for bleed out on every suit.

Here's an example of a suit: Assault gk.0. Scroll down a bit and note the maxHealth attribute. It's near the maxArmor and maxShield attributes. AFAIK, this has been in DUST forever. We do actually have hulls like in EVE. They just aren't in the UI.
This little piece of information only became evident when CCP released the DUST SDE.

Maybe, maybe not. What difference does the 10hp mean for most people anyway? There's so much info in this game I guess some stuff just need to be limited to server side only.

I can see that some of it is unimportant like have 10 HP under your Shields and Armor. It just doesn't matter. If you get to 0 Shields, 0 Armor and live to run away and fight another day, good for you.
Some stats however, are critically important to be displayed in a way that not only easy to see, but easy to compare. I'm talking about weapon damage types and ranges. Hopefully CCP gets on that soon. |
