...is unfounded.
There is no problem with cloaks in any FPS game so long as it is balanced. I can give at least several games that offers cloaks done right.
1. Halo 2. Kill Zone 3. Team Fortress 2
Also, don't forget that active scanners (if strong enough) will be able to reveal the position of the cloaked user if the cloaked user doesn't have a low-enough profile. This means that only the Gallente Scout Gk.0 (prototype) will be the only one to be able to avoid even the Duvolle Focused Active Scanner that has a 15dB scan resolution. But that suit only offers one high-slot and is primarily made for intel gathering and recon so using this as a high-damage sniper is out of the question. The Minmatar Scout Mk.0 is built for assassinations but doesn't take full advantage of the profile dampening and thus will be vulnerable to the Duvolle Scanner.
There is also the fact that cloaking will be an equipment item which means... NO CLOAKED HEAVIES WITH HMGS because heavies can't fit equipment.
Again, as long as the cloak is done right there is no problem with it.
OK, CCP. When are knives finally going to be improved?

There is a problem of what is right?
We can look at a large number of games that have done cloaks where they are either the worst or or over best feature of the multiplayer experience to where it becomes a rather un fun game for those who do not cloak.
Crysis, Planetside 2, Killzone and others come to mind.
So far we have a few good rules based on the posts so far but it would not hurt to add a bit more and to find out if anything is changing for scanners, but it only takes one exceptional rule and that cloak becomes the worst thing i the world to ever exist.
So the biggest question is
Why?
Why Cloaks?
I see cloaks as a mobility tool, to allow players to cross dangerous and highly visible areas of the game, this game has quite a few open places.
I do not want to see cloaks utilized as a weapon or a means of 'invincibility' that other games have made it to be at times.

Halo 3 did it right. But ever since Halo 4 came out, the cloak has become UNDERpowered since the introduction of the Promethean Vision.

Yeah, but that's cause cloaks fall under the same as dedicated shotty users, and snipers. Hence like those other they have become almost a standard in many FPS. You don't have to like em. But snipers and shottys aren't GAME BREAKING as many are thinking cloaking will be. |

FPS players will whine (just not the QQ you see here) but they themselves have no leverage when at the end of matches they are coming out above in kills then the guy with cloak. sucks to get killed but that shotty, and that sniper, and that ghost. been killed many times. But I wouldn't say they were game breaking. |

Wouldn't a pretty a pretty simple way to allow for high mobility without breaking the game just be to make cloaked suits invisible to scanners but require them to keep the equipment out to stay cloaked?
This would allow for stealthy movements but would not directly contribute to combat capabilities. |

The most important factor will be if CCP addressees TTK.
If it's the same, the cloak will be godly, but if it's as it should be (slightly longer TTK than 1.4-1.5, shorter than 1.3) having the advantage of shooting first won't always be the deciding factor like it seems to be now.

Caldari Lvl 5 Scouts will be able to do more damage without revealing themselves which will be good for their bonus while the Amarr will have a shorter recovery and depletion cycle which could be good for them considering their possible play styles with Scrambler Pistols.
They all will make good infiltration suits but will make sub-par sniper suits. I hope they do one day consider a marksmen specialization with increased profile scan, damage bonuses to long range weaponry, and racial bonuses to specific gear.

That is all easily rectified by playing a scout, IWS. How you see it is not from a scouts perspective. Your perspective makes it utilitarian... which is great! But That would be a normal cloak.

What use would the scout have of the cloak if he cannot also add a droplink? Only the logi will find good use of a cloaking device as you describe, I know I will stick with my dampening and droplinks if it is not useful at all at combat. It is a waste if you give scouts special bonuses to the cloak but limits is use to only be usefull for cloaked logi getting behind enemy lines to place droplinks. |

There was another guy at the lan party that we were also never allowed to be on the same team.
I didn't mind the party was meant to have fun not pwn everything.
Pwning everything is for tournaments such as the annual base halo tournament at the MWR.
To be honest they couldn't figure out what weapon they could restrict me to in halo 1 that would have stopped me from dominating, probably the rocket launcher because I would have ran out of ammo.

my problem when it comes to cloaking.
im not so sure how its going to work and if it works similar to how the rdvs r cloaked when coming in. players will be completely invisible and impossible to spot. on halo the way our active camo worked was somewhat liked this... u stood still or moved very slowly. u were harder to spot. the second u start moving faster.. the cloak becomes alot less effective and so u r easier to spot.
u also appeared on the radar as well when moving even with the cloak activated.
i dont see a cloak being possible for this game. and even if it is in the making on its release it will cause alot of problems...and lots of imbalance. if a cloak does infact happen it better not be anywhere near how rdvs can turn invisible.
this cloak shouldnt make any1 100% invisible. just a little harder to spot. im sure some ppl have come across that invisibility bug that was going around a while back. we all know how well that glitch/bug worked out for the players.
if something like this does come though. its gonna have to force the player to sacrifice their ability to be invisible on the tacnet. |
