Last night I was at Game stop 'returning' some games that... didn't fit my inventory at home *wink* when I saw a kid on an iPad looking at Dust514.
He was with 5 other kids, all huddling around this system, that was describing Dust514. Me, being the out-going SOB I am, simply walked up to the kids and asked if they were interested in the game.
The kid holding the system replies first: "It seems cool." "Yea!" Replies the rest.
"What do you know of it?" I asked, curious what they found out on there own.
"You can take over planets, move armies, you get this customizable RPG element for character build-up and equipment. Oh, there's money, value, risk vs reward..." *CUT* as they ranted - basically all they knew were what was said in 2012 dev-blogs. They knew next to nothing about EvE other then it was a space sim that was, maybe, or is still around. Lol
"Would you guys like it if it meant you'd be useless for over a month before you can make an impact on the field?"
I didn't get a response at first, but there was this really tall kid who stepped up from here: "If you have to work for it, doesn't that make it more satisfying to use? You get to take that hard work and make a difference in a universe, that's cool."
BAM. BOOM. POOOOW.
Soon as this kid finished his friends jumped to agree on how cool that would be.
"It's over a month of you going 0/14 game after game, can you really say you'd enjoy that experience until it changes?" I asked with a raised eye-brow.
"Yes" o.0
"Why?"
"Look at BF4 - it's just instant satisfaction. FPS's are all we pretty much play, we want something involved outside of a program."
"Player vs player?" I asked
"No, it doesn't have to be player vs player, it could be player with player changing the gaming environment somehow. Ever played mine craft? We play that game- if an FPS could have an environment like that but with consequences and things that matter and move with or without you... then how is that anything but a next gen game?"
At this point I'm sort of in shock, these aren't the answers I expected at all!
I took off shortly after since I got a call asking for a favor - but I gave the guys my PSN and plan to squad up with them later today or this week.
How many experiences have you guys had speaking over Dust with people who've never played?

I made the mistake of hyping the game with coworkers and friends just prior to Uprising. Nobody logged in twice.
So, I'm not soiling my name again trying to push this. Especially not without some basic things in the game being fixed and/or added first. When they're confident enough to market the game outside of PSN, I might publicly admit that I play.

I've talked and played this game with my 17yo son and 23yo nephew and a couple of his friends....
while they enjoy playing as a group, they do not like the grind...
when I set them up with good fits they like it a lot....but when they see that it may take up to 1 million sp to get better stuff they go back to CoD...
I think Dust is a 'get 1 out of 10' kinda game.....that tall kid might be the 1 to stay out of that whole group...
so far i'm the '1 out of 8', but I can't bring myself to even ask another 12 people yet to try this game to just get 1 more...

I take it marketing isn't ccps strong point
I have yet to see a single dust trailer.....anywhere unless I was looking for it.......I have seen eve trailers though but they seem a bitlacking......just a cinematic ......i haven't seen much else......they need to start getting out there......the player base for this game would be so much higher and would breathe new life into this game....
I LOVE this game and I love the concept.......but jumping into matches seeing the same people over and over gets.....well stagnant....we need more players.....I've told everyone I know about this game but only ONE has tried it......want to know why......because games like bf4 and cod have huge marketing campaigns...... all dust has at the moment is the recruiter reward system...... |

Play the game.
FPS players that have played more then BF or COD.
"It wont work"
"It's looks dated"
"WHAT CAN YOU DO THERE?" (most fps vets know that there is more to it then just pew pew Team death match)
My answer "Well ......."

Those kids get it. I'm surprised none of them answered its free lol. But seriously what they said about it being more rewarding is true, new mercs gotta die a lot to learn how to live. Kd really isn't everything. Take me for instance, I have lost hundreds of dropships learning how to fly back in chrome. My kd was sh!t cause all of my sp was in dropships. When I was on the ground I only had starter fit medic, repping a heavy praying that my reps could rep him through the pain so the 3 reds he was holding off wouldn't kill me. After uprising I got my assault dropship, skilled into cal assault and then got my rail rifle. I actually tried working on my kd after 1.3 and brought it up from .97 to 1.58 because I had learned my roles. That's way more satisfying than call of battlefield, and I was on division 1 for tanks. |

I'm surprised they said yes, after the way you described it. For the record, though, you described it inaccurately. It is not that you need to grind for a month to be successful. It's that you need to actually play it for that long, to get good at it. It takes that long, to embrace AR514 A starter fit, with just initial points dumped into AR skills, is quite deadly, when used by a skilled player.
Plus, saying "0/14 for a month" is grossly exaggerating things.

I was honestly trying to get them to see Dust in a negative light, they turned it positive themselves. I'm guessing they were already hyped up before I got there.
