I'm going.
I'd like to state that I don't think CCP Shanghai is going to make the same mistake they did last year and over-hype a bunch of material that is very far off. I originally felt the same as many of you but I've got the distinct feeling that, given the repertoire they've gained from last year's fan-fest they're going to be a lot more cautious about how they present things.
In fact, I'm even willing to wager that a lot of people will be disappointed at the lack of future content presented.

I will watch the videos to see what is promised and what the new executive poducer's vision is, but I'm not going to get too excited as it's likely as not to be shelved or changed dramatically before implementation.
Short term hype is detrimental to this game. It generates high expectations that aren't delivered upon which crushes hope. Repeat that often enough and you get burnout.
Best to take the long term view and not worry so much about the bumpy road. We have 3-5 years of development ahead of us before DUST can be considered AAA. Relax, eat your popcorn, and watch as this train careens around sharp bends, passes over collapsing bridges, plows through cows grazing on the tracks, and leaves many standing on the platform as it screams through the station at top speed. |

I'd much rather prefer that and a balanced game to this consistantly inconsistent rebalancing, nerfs and buffs.
I refuse to believe that their constant fumbling and introduction and nerfing of a new set of so called FOTM stuff every couple of months is due to their incompitance, they just can't be that bad.
its a deliberate strategy to sell aur items and boosters to keep people wanting to spec into the next best thing.
I bet they're laughing their asses off, watching us discuss various balance issues that they offset by intention.
In either case, not going to fanfest, I might emberass myself.
(A few obvious deliberate scenarios)
- Call logi suit (in retrospect) were obviously OP from the start, did they not see it? And a suit nerf, an armor buff and a shield nerf later an its very weak indeed. Can you honestly say that the old cal logi suit was OP compared to todays Gal logi that can tank way more armor than the cal logi ever could tank shields, and get it back at a 140 hp per second on top of it?
- The whole lets sell aur contact nades very cheaply and nerf them to hell a short time after.
- The whole flaylock fiasko, from god mode to close to useless, same goes somewhat for lasers.
- I could go on.
If I'm wrong, and there really isn't any business strategy behind all this nonsensical balancing scrubbery, if this is all really done with intent to improve the game, well, I'm at a loss for words....
NO.
When tip top QA is in use at other Corporations and even then you get to hear : What kind of idiots do you have working on these turbine prototypes? Response: sigh, the best idiots that we can hire.
Now change that to what ever idiots we can manage to hire on a very limited budget and things are not looking good.
Two things: Never forget that your military weapon is made by the lowest bidder.
Do not assume bad intent to what can be placed at the door step of ineptness.

It's going to be a very easy presentation to prepare for.
They can just run the exact same video of last year.

Watched last year, learned my lesson.
I am amazed that people still don't CCP crap for all of that bs from the last one.
The only way the presentation could be credible is if it starts with an apology and doesn't pretend that this game is in a good place right now.
Not likely though.....

First, in the US that is actually not true.
Second, You actually shouldn't worry about that too much. Most contracts are fulfilled by a bidder and rarely are weapon contracts given to the lowest bidder as each contract has sets of requirements in multiple areas like functionality, stress tests, situation descriptions, material requests, and many other details outlining the function of the desired item.
If the contractor - person desiring the weapon - actually chooses the bidding method for contract choice instead of staying with an established or trusted provider then the bidder is chosen through a bidding system where every bid is analyzed and rated on a point system for each requirement. After the rating if there are any questions or a tie then the parties are contacted for further questioning to hammer out the next set of defining details. After this the winner is chosen. The winner could vary as price may not be the most important factor that is weighed during the process. Often for R&D cost is not the issue, the result is. There was no, "lets make the A bomb for only.. 2mil." Often it is, "try and keep it within this budget, but if not... we'll deal with it." Meaning that the manufacture must also meet the requirements for the product as well, if the developer is different from the manufacturer.
Ultimately the decision is weighted for what is deemed most important to obtain the result. Cost is often an issue with small items like office supplies or air conditioners, but when it comes to weaponry it is not the rule but the exception. Sorry everyone had to learn here, just using the many years of experience and schooling to help educate the group. I find it a very interesting subject and have thus based my career off it.
However,, Tech Ohm Eaven, if you do not claim the US as your nation of citizenship then you may in fact be completely correct. Within the US Government contracting system the Lowest bidder does not always win. The best one does.
Third,The US Military's weapons were actually designed by a private contractor who was paid very little for his creations, but did it because it was the right thing to do to help the US win the 2 largest wars America had ever faced. They originally used .45 caliber rounds that were comparatively superior to the weapons at the time. In fact the Military still does demonstrations for its soldiers where they fire weapons from other countries to show the soldiers that they will have superior firepower in their field situations as they did then and as they do now. - pretty cool stuff to watch.

If CCP had made even half of their promises that were given last Fanfest, I would be as excited as a kid getting a new console for Christmas.
Alas, everything from the last one turned out to be a complete joke, with almost nothing given from the last few patches that even look remotely like the "roadmap" CCP presented. It's already bad enough that 1.7 was a huge letdown, and that was the final straw for a lot of people investing in this game; it was also the reason many people decided to stick with this game, until we all realized this game holds no potential in the hands of an inconsistent developer.
Dust 514 is like that child genius who doesn't apply himself in school; has potential to do anything he puts his mind to, yet never utilizes or cares about reaching it.

I'm going again as I did the last two years .
Hopefully the Dust 514 keynote will be less aspirational and more substance. The round tables are always where you learn the most stuff and out at night drinking with the Dev's is when you find out what is likely to happen and what is causing the problems stopping other stuff appearing.
I agree with the whole SoonTM bs, as it's now short hand for not anytime soon at all or indeed ever. Should drop it now.
Last year there was more than enough Dust round tables to fill up a full 3 days.
My expectations are:
An acknowledgement from CCP Rouge that the game didn't develop as much as was hoped.
More of the 'what we can deliver in the next 6 months' and less 'wouldn't it be cool if this arrived before next Fanfest'.
Not expecting a specific format change or expansion but an announcement at least that the next generation (or should that be currant generation?) version of Dust is in development right now.
Player market to be established by time of Fanfest with a goal of the full economic link between the two games being in place by the following Fanfest.
Full racial suits. But I'm not expecting the pilot or the fabled Command suit.
MTAC's delayed indefinitely (PS3 can't handle them) wouldn't be surprised if they were scrapped altogether.
Skirmish V1.0 returned.
Medium vehicle classes announced but not launched straight away.
Changes to the skill tree requiring a full respec.
Additional skills for trading.
Further work on the NPE.
Enforced segregation of higher SP players from new players.
New planet types (allowing an increase in districts in MH)
Another vehicle rebalance.
My main hope however (but highly unlikely because of the work involved) is a top to toe rebuilding of the corp UI in both games so that they can better work in tandem with each other.

But I don't really trust CCP after last year. Would be a waste to go, get hyped up, just to get another Uprising.
