I have been in several matches and noticed the sniper rifle does not have the range it once did. I was running my Thale which has the longest range of any sniper rifle and I was at 490M and the dot failed to turn red and it failed to detect the enemy stats. Tried as I might it would not register, so I pulled the trigger expecting a head shot or at least a hit, nothing. So I moved in closer now I am at 400M and it finally turns red. I have tried this on other maps and the rifle fails to pick up anyone past 410M. Before 1.7 I was able to get the fabled 600M head shot, now nothing. I know your going to say stop using a Thale and to that I say give me a sniper weapon that can kill someone that is tanked in 4shots or less and I would use it. Ever try to kill a tanked heavy with a Kaal sniper rifle, its not going to happen. Was there a stealth nerf to the sniper class or is it just another wonka wonka moments of dust?

on a side note they should have a price buff for the cowards weapon.
why cowards should be rewarded with cheaper guns when they are at a lot less risk is beyond me. |

I have to say by your post you have been the victim of a lot of sniper shots. It also says you are scared and angry that someone can kill you and there is nothing you can do about it. Not all snipers sit in the red line. I myself only use it when it is to my advantage and there is little to no tactical spots elsewhere, also known as my team is red lined and we have to fight back somehow.

TANK514 is a problem is why and snipers are not. If you think snipers are a problem then your not playing the game right.

Also, if I see one in a match, I take out a profile dampened Scout and spend the rest of it just following them around and killing them so they can't get any points.

No need to hate on the snipers.... The game is more fun if there are a few of them because they teach us all to keep our heads down... A very releastic aspect of war.
Also, they are about as effective as tanks when it comes to winning matches (not very)
And it it really easy to hunt them in most cases. Sometimes if I'm in a foul mood I'll purposely hunt somebody using an expensive/rare sniper rifle because I know I will be able to find that exact person eventually. Can't do that with any other weapon system. |

In the Feedback section I've posted my idea for fixing "sniper" rifles. I'll repost here
They need to add a feature where anytime a "sniper" uses the zoom' feature with his rifle, it will result in -50 WP. Upon firing the "sniper" rifle, the rifle will self destruct, killing the "sniper" instantly. Attempting to fire a "sniper" rifle a second time in one game will result in being banned until next downtime.
Feedback?

I think sniping at an long-range is pointless in this game, If you consider the layout of the maps and weaponry it doesn't add up to camp outside of map Most weapons are not effective after 100m, so when I am sniping I try to go for 200/300 as my optimal range and it works perfectly, I am close enough so that my hit detection is good
Snipers complaining about not being able to hit at 600m can at least know that, while you are pissed off the rest of the game is delighted for you
In Dust, I think a sniper needs to be about 100/200m behind his team, providing support not just sitting on top a hill, hitting guys that can't see him.. and not assisting his team Snipers are the best AI if used in co-ordination with frontline

That is valid and critical affect a great Sniper can have on an entire team. He also knows what he is talking about. C. There is an issue with both hit detection and frame rendering D. There is an issue with tactical information / target acquisition E. There is a difference between a PRO Sniper and someone that can fit a proto SR, that usually is indicated by 30+ kills match in, match out, calvin b is one of these snipers F. Having a Sniper as part of my 6 is essential to squad mechanics G. Got a problem with any of the above? Dont't care, it means you are a scrub.

No kidding. You think people hate on snipers because they are killed by them? Most of you useless bastards cant hit the broad side of a barn.
I am sick of seeing up to a 3rd of the team sitting in the back with sniper rifles. News flash if your in that situation. Take it upon yourself to go change kits and actually be useful. Most of you dumb **** snipers cant do anything beneficial for the team. I have seen maybe 5 snipers in nearly 2 years who are worth a god damn to their team.
You people are clueless and completely self deluded if you think your an " asset" to you teammates sitting back coming away with a 10-20 man kill streak by the end of the match. Did you kill clones? Sure yeah great GJ! But a scrub with and AR would have outdone you and actually offered close in support on objectives.
Some snipers. And i stress very few. Actually understand the need to move and be active on the field. And to you fine gentlemen I congratulate you for understanding how to play your role.

There is something going on with hit detection, and frame rendering, since 1.7. There is aslo something going on with the tactical overlay information, since 1.7
I can not thunk of what silent change was made, butt I have found that the 'frames may take some time to render even when they are within field and range of vision' comment in 1.7 Patch notes has had a dramatic negative affect.
Again, I can't say exactly what, bar the fact that frames plus 200 meters are 'non existant'.
NOTE: On this above information, the field and target acquisitiin is dramatically different the more altitude you gain on map... IE: redline mountains is a fix for this. Blue MCC is a fix for this, Towers is a ohh wait we can't get ontop of our towers anymore WTF!
I read at some stage that there was an algorithm used to direct altitude and aviable cover, guess they used it to generate the maps and not kept the same principle, but simply removed our ability to gain height with dropship blowingup and no cover, guess that was not enough... for fks sake.
Ohh.. PRECISION ENHANCEMENT AND RANGE EXTENSION SHOULD AFFECT SR!

Not all snipers are in the redline, correct. Some fly dropships up to spires and building inaccessible to anyone who does not feel like wasting 2 minutes and possibly a dropship just to take out one player. I snipe from the redline sometimes when I'm bored but I acknowledge that it's a horribly ****** thing to do. There is no excuse for it. It's hiding behind an infantry shield while picking them off as they either ignore you or approach you.
I typically run scout or assault but if there are too many snipers on the other team then I run to a good counter sniping spot and snipe them until they stop trying to redline snipe. Sometime this take the whole game. The good thing is that these snipers seem to typically expect the match to hand them easy sniper kills are 300-400m away without worrying about resistance from an enemy sniper. I've had games where I've kept 3 or more redline snipers at bay or at least distracted for the whole match because they would not try anything else. Basically what I'm saying is that you don't have to be in the redline to be a good sniper.
I'd be ok with taking out snipers completely. I know this would never happen but I only know of a handful of snipers who play tactically and make call outs every chance they get. These snipers move around when their position cannot benefit the team and only get a handful of kills but are invaluable to the team. Unfortunately these players are extremely rare so the "sniper" in this game is typically just a blueberry in the redline trying to get free kills.
TL;DR: Redlines ruined sniping in this game. |

The problem with all this unfounded and unnecessary sniper hate is that its just a blanket stance applied to any and all snipers tell me you hate filled fish what sniper(s) have you or do you consider as good and or useful, never have I seen any of you mention one just your hate of them. The red line might suck but the areas in them are prime for sniping and that's on CCP, they should move the red line back and open up though's area or have no red line but again don't hate the player hate the game.
All this talk about which play style is more useful is just moronic. If you have actually played this game you will find that from AR's-Tanks if the player is an idiot or new they will have zero effect on a win and even help more so in their own loss. Scoring the highest kills in a match though nice is not always useful even for a whole team, if no one held down objectives or had good positioning they will always lose period even if they took out more of the other team's clones.
In closing if a team has too much of any one suit, vehicle, weapon, etc. they will be at a disadvantage in this game if no one else adds any other dynamic to the front line once something is introduced without a counter. If you like sniping then snipe but be dynamic when the time calls for it, if you like running an gunning do so but also be ready to switch up your style when the opportunity presents itself, but this goes without saying I would hope.
@ OP please excuse the posted statement as its off the topic of your post and otherwise I can't add any insight on or to the state of the Thales, eventually I guess but not today.

The hatred for snipers is crazy. I have no problem being one or having them on my team. If we all ran around with assault rifles this would be a very vanilla game. I love diversity and that is why I play multiple roles to support my team. If I am playing sniper, than you know S*** has hit the fan. I am working hard to keep the other team pinned so my team can advance. Yes I can do that and I will prove it anytime of the week. I will make you regret ever leaving cover for I may not kill you, but I will weaken you so your easier to kill by my teammates. So please stop the hated against snipers and gear it toward something that matter like lag.

Can we get DEV confirmation on whether this is intended or another bug..??? Personally I hope it's intended and snipers are forced to co-ordinate with frontline
For now...we have snipers 400m+ away from the objectives, doesn't provide much help with the layout of the maps and the fact they may be deep in redline
Sniping range in Dust should be anything from 150m-300m this is where the shots should be most effective Anything further just out-ranges every counter to be used against them, unless you want to do it and leave objectives undefended behind you....
I have seen some very good CQC snipers and when I have a sniper covering from squad from close range the games go well
