Hey, lets just make the damn thing deployable, and not a moving beacon.
Instead of a handheld scanner, make it so it has to be deployed on the ground.
this would mean that only certain areas could be scanned. not wherever the person is.
it would be a pulsating device. every so many seconds it would scan in a certain distance, either really far straight, or a medium but every direction scan.

Not gonna lie, this is a pretty cool idea. I wouldn't mind having a suit that deploys these things like uplinks. Something like 2 max active, 3 carried. 50 meter radial range. Bam. +1

A deployable scanners give far too large an advantage to the defending team, or the team closest to the supply depot. There's already enough of an edge provided by triage/ammo hives and uplinks. Doing this to the scanner would mean constant scans and no downsides of a) having an equipment slot used up, as you can drop your scanners then switch to a different suit or b) having to use the scanner repeatedly to refresh scan data, which ties up your weapon.
There's also the matter of putting them in places unreachable by anyone but dropship pilots, which under the right circumstances could make them near impossible to destroy. |

People use the scanners now, they scan when they want, putting it into a high spot, isn't a problem. Because people can just use there handheld scanners like right now. Theres no difference.

What I find hilarious is folks whining about the scanner now. What changed about the scanner that made it OP? Nothing.
What changed was sharing targets on the radar when anyone on the team/squad had them in their field of vision. What this meant was that you were pretty much always on radar, at all times cause SOMEONE would see you. So nobody cared about scanners.
Now that the radar is a little less OP in general, scanners are standing out.
So the folks whining about scanners dont actually feel the radar is OP (as its less OP than it used to be), they just either dont want to be vulnerable while scanning (i miss out on kills due to scanning all the time) or they dont want to lose their former equipment (im guessing nanos with armor rep).
Radar may or may not be OP in this game, but its not new to the scanner. In fact, radar is less OP now than it ever was and the intended role of low radius suits now actually have a point since you can get under most scanners and arent on everyones radar because one person happened to spot you across the map. |

Personally I like the idea, although I think that such an eqiupment could be added in addition to, not just to replace the current active scanner. I see the placeable scanner as having pulses every X seconds (which reduces with level) for so many meters (with increases with level) and has a certain scan strength. There can be a few variants that max one at the expense of another option, and it can have similar health to the hive and beacon, although it would stand a touch taller.
I feel the active scanner does require changes from how it is now though. |

Finally, someone who gets it. Big plus one for you.
The current iteration of scanners has made stealth gameplay and scouts possible. If you don't show up on scans, no one can see you unless they have direct LOS on you. If you are seen by one, you are NOT seen by all. This is a huge advantage, one that was not possible pre-1.4.
With regard to equipment changes, what people don't realize is that if you can use it, you can abuse it. Intelligent players will ALWAYS find a way to use in game mechanics to their advantage. It might take coordination and skill, but in the right hands it can and will be overpowered.
In the above case, everyone in my squad would deploy scanners in the central area to cover every direction. Doesn't matter if you have to have it on your suit to prevent self-destruct because everything else could be deployed separately using the supply depot. Scanners would still cover every angle and logis would still have two equipment slots to play with, just as they do with the present scanners. Only now, you have the advantage of not needing to pull it out to use it, so assaults or other suits can focus on killing instead of scanning. |

Not a bad idea I suppose.
A well placed Flux grenade would eliminate the nuisance.
I still feel like we need some kind of "Active Jammer", whether deployable or not, to be a hard counter to the Active Scanner.
I Honestly feel like if we had a deployable jammer, it would balance out the Active Scanner perfectly. Intel teams would be able to use a deployable jammer to mask movements when setting up flanking positions and forward assault positions, as well as more effective defensive strongholds.

I would think you want a deployable passive scanner... Active means you would need to activate it to scan. I would rather want to know a red dot is there without having to activate it. |

I thought of this before but the ONLY WAY it should be done is if it IMOBILIZES THE USER! I stress this because we don't need 16 scanners all over the map creating lag an camps.
If they make a animation that is 2 seconds to unpack an set up, scan duration and pack up which leaves you unable to cancel an stuck standing operating an requesting cover from your team, the scanner should only work like this.
It should require teamwork an tactics to use. |

There is room for scanners to be tweaked for sure. But to come at it from this massive game breaking imblanace is silly because the radar overall is less of a crutch and less OP than before. Before you could pretty much assume everyone could see you on radar because one LOS meant you were on all radar.
And you were unaware of it.
Now? You get a notification that you were scanned.
If you are relying on stealth and you got scanned you can adjust your game.
Scouts should probably have an easier time getting under the scanner.
And MAYBE scanners shouldnt put a marker on the screen, only the radar (this would make it less of an auto win button when tracking someone around a corner).
And the duration jump shouldnt be 5 seconds to like 20+, because I can keep someone scanned forever with the advanced scanner. Maybe reduce advanced and proto a bit so its harder to track a target indefinitely.
But those tweaks are all that are needed. Stationary scanners would promote camping which is boring. |

FYI Scanners are not OP right now. A scout suit only needs 1 complex profile dampner to beat any proto active scanner. A logi/assault suit needs 2 complex profile dampners to beat any proto active scanner.
There is nothing OP about them. People just want to be able to brick tank AND beat scanning at the same time. You're either invisible or you're frontline. You have to pick one. You can't be both.
Proto scout suits have something like 4 low slots. that's 2 speed mods and 1 profile dampner and something else to make you viable in the game. You really need to learn what all the skills do before you call one item OP.

IMO scouts should have ZERO profile dampeners, instead stacking them would hide their health bar and name, but they would still be red when you aim at them. Also it should take ONE profile dampener to block their meta level scanners.
