As a gallente scout my suits passive scan precision is 45db, that means I should be able to always see on my radar any suits that are within range of my minimap and have a scan profile of 45db or higher, that would be most medium suits and heavy suits, that are not wearing dampeners.
However I find that I don't pickup most mediums and heavy's on my radar, they can't all be wearing dampeners.
1. Why am I not seeing these suits on my radar?
2. Also what is the point of a scout skilling into the scan precision skill and wearing precision enhancers if my passive scan precision is already lower than most enemy suits that I encounter?
3. I have scout suit level 3 and profile dampening 4, that should give me a 23% bonus to profile dampening, bringing my scan profile down from 45db to 34.65, example: 23% of 45 is 10.35, 10.35- 45 = 34.65. That should mean that I should be off the radar of most mediums and heavies, yet It seems like they pick me up n there radar even though I am under cover and out of line of sight. Are the game mechanics for passive scan profile and scan precision broken?

You need to look at your scan radius, not the radius of your minimap. The radius of your minimap is 100m. I'm not positive but I think that the scan radius of a proto Gallente scout is at max, 36m (with both range amplification and the Gallente scout skill at proto). So in theory, you should pick up mercs with a higher scan profile within 36m of you even if you don't have line of sight on them.
If you were to equip 4x complex range amplifiers and 1x complex precision enhancer on a proto suit, you could passively scan a 102.88 m radius with a 32.4 dB scan precision. Unfortunately this data would only be available to you, and not your squad, so active scanning as always would trump passive scanning. You'd also be paper thin. |

my scan radius is 16m i have had many instances where heavies and mediums are very close to me and they do not appear on my radar, they can't all be wearing dampeners, theoretically most mediums and heavies within 16 meters of me should always be painted on my radar thats why I think the game mechanics are broken |

This does not directly answer your question but if you understand the ranges of your minimap it would really help (unless you already do). I was one of the biggest speculators on Passive scanning so I went out and tested it and proved it true. It works.
I do believe I accidentally wrote the Passive scanning bible. Well crud.
EDIT: On Page 4 Haerr wrote some very helpful module stats. Do read those because they are helpful. |

Hey Bojo, long time.
Draco, regarding #2: you answered your own question. You can detect scout at the default precision but you can't detect someone that has put points into dampening. As far as not seeing people on TACNET I've seen two common issues. First is people are not estimating ranges properly. Second is there can be a slight delay in detecting and people move into range very quickly.

If you're seeing this near enemy objectives it's because they passively scan everything for about 20m regardless of dampening. It's stupid but that's how it works. Stealth is not allowed near these for some reason.
Also sometimes it's just dumb luck. An enemy may spawn and automatically be looking right you. Other times they may have chased you and had a feeling where you were. Sometimes they trace your fire. Lots of variables there that come down to luck and quick reaction time. |

With Gal scout to pro and the range enhancement to lvl 5 you will have 36m.
your lvl3 so your suit has a range of 20.8m. Reasonable but only useful in building and dense terrain with lots of obstructions. its still uncomfortably close.
Realistically if you really want to explore this part of the suit you need range amplification and also range amplifiers added to your low slots (personally i'd stick to 1 or 2 modules as the stacking penalty gets ridiculous after that, but in theory if you did max it out and filled it with the best mods you could fill most of your radar screen with your passive scan)
Lets say you get to lvl 3 with range amplifiers as well:
16m x 1.3 (+30% from suit) x 1.3 (+30% from skill) = 27.04m
Now 1st mod is 100% effective and an enhanced is +35% ( x 1.35) = 36.5m 2nd mod is only 87% effective (so only adds +30.45%) =47.6m
In fact crunched a few numbers. In theory if you had lvl 5 skills in suit and scan range and 2 proto range enhancing modules you'd have a passive scan radius of about 72.5m - Nearly 2/3rds of your radar
Sounds like something your interested in? Not going to lie, that will make your suit very vulnerable and it is a hell of a lot of skill points but that is what it's capable of.
