A Tactical Guide to Uplink Strategy
(or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Being a Spam Artist)
Note: this is a work in progress
Foreword: My intent is not to create a "WP Farmer's almanac" (maybe I should have used that for the title, lol) for uplink spamming. This guide is designed as a sort of supplement to the excellent Logi code thread*link here*, in order to encourage and facilitate the "working as intendedGäó"use of uplinks.
Introduction
Contrary to popular belief, there is strategy to be found in the correct use of this much-maligned piece of equipment. Just to get the defnitions straight, strategy refers to the overarching goal (or goals) of the military force in question. This is not to be confused with tactics, which are the means by which that goal is achieved. For example, the strategic goal of D-day was to establish a foothold in continental Europe in order to open a second, western front. The tactics employed (massively oversimplifying) were a combined airdrop and amphibious landing at multiple points to seal off a large section of coastline.
So, back to uplink strategery. Rather than merely "reinforcing" as listed in the many R's of the logi code, I like to think of what I do as more of a "Tactical logistics" style of play. With the proper tactics, we can place uplinks in such a way as to shape the battlefield. Our strategy is to effectively make the battlefield as "small" as possible for our forces, allowing not only for reinforcement of the positions/battle lines we already have, but to create potential new ones to outflank the enemy as well. At some point dropships will presumably take on more and more of this role (soonGäó), but for now (1.6) they are still flying coffins if a good forge gunner is around, and uplinks are the most effective way to shrink the battlefield.
Important! Before even starting out, you will need to spend some SP, as basically everything in this guide will be hard to do if you don't have the drop uplink deployment skill to at least level 3, and level 4 is where you really start to open up the possibilities.
To keep this from being an insane wall of text, I'll break it up into a few parts. In part one we will start with the basics:
- How uplinks work
- What not to do with uplinks
- What types of uplinks there are and how they differ
- How many uplinks can I use at one time?
- How do I keep track of them?
Part two will briefly discuss some basic fitting suggestions, and part 3 will cover tactics (what this thread is actually about!), using the uplinks to their maximum potential.

You should mention facing.
The direction someone faces when they spawn is the same direction you faced when you threw the droplink out.
Thus running up to a wall and throwing one out will lead to people spawning, facing a blank wall.
This leads to precious seconds wasted as they try to regain their orientation.
So don't do it. Simply aim yourself in the direction you will go after you have layed down the drop link. Generally that's a useful direction. Or plan for what is a useful direction - looking at the nearest objective, for example, helps when someone spawns in to stop a hack. Facing in some random direction wont help. |

Thanks for the suggestion. I often forget that functionality myself to be perfectly honest. I'll be sure to mention it in part 3.

Think you should title this a Comprehensive guide as you delve beyond the links themselves and into fittings. |

LOL, I guess I could. Didn't plan on being this specific originally. But, as things I write often do, it got away from me a little bit and took on a life of its own. Some of part 3 should be ready by tomorrow, but I think the finished product may have to wait until my return flight...

Just a thought, but I generally consider the flux variants battle spawns and the quantum/ standard variants entry spawns.
The flux are more useful in the heat of battle, granted placing them as such doesn't allow them to survive very long, but your team returns to the field faster.
The quantum have a bonus to the number of spawns they may sustain, so I figured that they were designed with long term deployment in mind. Deploying these 120m or more (Not ridiculously so) from an area of interest allows the team to reform and approach tactfully.
So theres my 0.02 isk flux are best deployed near an engagement, while the standard and quantum variants are best used as long distant reforming points.

Yeah, I'm sure most of us do it that way. I'm putting it into part 3 eventually(soon-¥Gäó), but it makes sense to mention it earlier, so I made the change to part 1. Keep the good feedback coming!

Shameless bump. I swear I'll have this done by Xmas, I was waiting to see if there were any notable changes in 1.7/1.8 but the answer is no/who knows when we'll find out (still hoping for an amarr scout in 1.8!) so I guess I'll just finish and make changes later.

Tell me about it. I like to write, gotta do something with that minor in literature, but man this is time consuming with the formatting and character limits and etc etc.
Anyway, made some minor edits and reformats to make room for the rest of part 3. On track to finish it before 2014.

Also, made a few minor edits to the guide. Still waiting on 1.8 and how they plan to work the Amarr logi bonus.

I am new to uplink deployment but there is one thing which does really annoy me.
If one plans to lay an uplink which is more in a support or in a flanking position away from the front line and is in a spot of relative calm then please, please take a few seconds to look at the large map to see if there are other uplinks in the same spot.
It really riles me when I plan my next drop and I check my current uplinks (which I do every fre minutes) to find them in a pile of half a doxen uplinks. Not only does it make it hard to plan what to do next because in that mass of blurry blue light it's impossible to work out if my link has gone or not but it makes the shape of the battlefield warped. Having a pile of uplinks in the same corner means that there's only one entry in the battle area but the battle is brought to the links and there's no other way in and the things are camped.
Just don't run around a corner and think that this is a nice spot where ther's no firing going on so it would be good for an uplink please check that there aren't more five paces ahead. Clumpng uplinks brings the batte to you and it gives the opposition the ability to defend easier than if the uplinks were depoluyed in a manner which gives you the upper hand.
In short, look at the bloody map.

Interesting. I haven't been able to play yet, will have to do some testing and also see if I can get infos from CCP. Seems strange to me they would program it that way.
